I can only give my opinions and my reasons for chatting or not. I usually begin my session multi-tabling MTT's and so I really don't waste the time, watching the chat. In fact, I usually don't even have the chat showing, I set the box to show the position of the tournament. If I get to the final table, then I will turn the chat on, just in case , there is some issue or someone wants a deal etc... When I used to watch the chat it was always the worst donkeys yelling at someone , and it is usually a person who makes a standard play and the donkeys will start berating them. I use to needle these guys for fun, but it became too tiresome. When I was just starting out, seeing a guy in a $2 tourney claim he was awesome at poker used to crack me up, now I just focus on the actual play and leave the chat to the same guys , saying the same things ,for the same years. LOL

To each his own, if people want to chat , it is OK with me. Once in awhile in A CC freeroll, I might comment to someone I have played with for a long time, but not a long conversation, just nice hand and Hi

The network is very important in any career you are going to do , but the most important thing for you to evolve in poker is for you to network with other players in the market , interacting by marking studies and most importantly , putting into practice everything you studied , action generates evolution .:deal:

Hi, I'm Pharaoh Ramses 2 at the tables and personally I have no problems. but I think, the lack of chat must be because emoticons are preferred to express :):ciao::icon_fara

They might be busy playing other tables or watching netflix.

That's me :)

Or Youtube , or reading a post/thread or sth else . Maybe tey have the chat off so as not to be distracted while pl;aying . Also some players try to manipulate you while playing , to affect you , this last I do not like it , it's a reason not to chat while playing .....

I beeelieve ACR can make the chats easier visible by putting it in a cloud form next to the player's name at the table. Would give a realistic feeling even.

no chat for me

I don't even look at the chat when I am playing poker. Usually it is someone ranting and raving about stupid stuff.

My opinion is that players want to concentrate her attention to the game, and not to that what others say. There are so many players with chats there are not for my ears/eyes.

When I started playing online poker some years ago, there was a lot of chat at the the tables.
Today players do not chat much.
Why?

I can only chat when I play on my desktop computer...not on my ipad...often use the Ipad when I am walking on the treadmill...impossible to walk, watch Netflix, play poker and chat !

I think most players have chats turned off.
The reason is different for everyone. Someone they distract, someone is watching a movie or TV series, etc.

Because most of people don't say nothing productive on the chat

I briefly played online poker on I think it was Full Tilt back in 2006, and back then the microstakes cash tables were almost like a chat site. I even made some "friends" that way, or at least people, whom I got to know a little bit. But as you say, those days are long gone. Its mostly a function of the fact, there are less truly recreational players these days and more people (like myself) playing for profit AKA "regulars". As others have said, most regulars multitable, and that leaves little time for engaging in friendly chat.

Quite a few also dont speak english, which on most sites in the only allowed chat language. Finally the situation has also been created by idiots, who abuse the chat to go crazy on other people rather than engage in friendly conversation. After being informed a few times, which unspeakable things, someone wants to do to their mother after losing a big pot to them, some people have selected to simply disable the chat all together.

It wasn't just the micro stakes that chatted a lot pre 2011 (I say 2011 because it was after 'Black Friday' that the table chat lessened considerably).

In the poker boom years, on Fulltilt Poker, there was LOTS of chat... and even more observer chat. (the observer chat would go crazy during some tournaments... ie. when a player would get KO'd deep in an MTT, the observer chat would just EXPLODE with comments (the lines would be scrolling by so fast you could never keep up with it).
And players on all tables seemed open to chatting.
It was because of chatting on Fulltilt tables that I got to know Gavin Smith (& a few others).
It was because of chat I got to know a number of other MTT regulars & held one private birthday tournament for my partner & invited a bunch of the FTOPS winners to it.

It was much friendlier back then and chatting on the tables was normal.
ie. at the start of a SnG, players would often say 'Hi' & at times also ask you where you were from. Not just the $1 tables... but I had this happen on $500 sng tables too.

Personally I think chat at the tables is good for drawing in recreational players to the game(s)... but like you mentioned, many players don't speak English and lots are playing many tables.

Times have really changed, haven't they? We have gone from complimenting players for a good hand, to almost total silence. What use to be "the thing" has become what some feel to be a distraction.

The chat box goes by too quickly to even read sometimes as they put the hand details and the winners in the same chat box.

Also no one talks back.

I also play some online bingo. People talk in there all the time.

Hi all ! I somehow also paid attention to this - I think that several generations of young players have grown up - who do not like old traditions and playing at several tables also does not contribute to this communication !!! plus there was a lot of aggression at one time at the tables

Honestly I would like to chat and make friends while playing but I think these days most people are playing multiply tables and listening to music, when I used to play I would only play one table and people would talk but like I say times change

Personally I find that when you start chatting to someone on-line,someone pushes all-in and the message you just typed out doesn't get sent, it used to be worse because the message used to disappear, and you had to type it out all again, Now that's OK. if you have typist skill's but being a two finger typist like myself, it is very annoying.
Also being a faceless person on the other end of the Internet, sometime's messages can be miss-understood, Example: I live in the U.K. and talking to an American On-line I mention a great Traditional British meal was Fish and Chips.
But Chips in America come in bags and are Crispy Potato slices deep fried and served cold, We call them Crisp's and what we Call Chips are French Fries to an American, So it can become very confusing at times.
One of the thing's I love about Poker is the fact it does not matter what language you speak, Poker has it's own set of rules that everyone understands and it doesn't matter where you come from, the aim of the game remains the same.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

I think there are a few reasons for it:
1. Multi-tabling, most players do this and as a result they have no time for chatting
2. Good players realize there is zero benefit to chatting, you are only giving away information to your opponents if you participate in chat
3. Sites don't seem to want players to chat even tho they have provided us with the chat box, chatting slows the game down and poker sites only have one concern, which is PROFIT, and from the site's perspective, their biggest reflection of profit is "hands per hour" at their tables so they push the speed as quickly as they possibly can.
4. Sites also realize that most chat is of the negative variety, while some do put "nh" into chat, most chats are angry replies to other players... and sites don't want players being attacked in such a manner, because players are their customers (their profit) and they want their customers to be happy. Sometimes I suspect chats don't show up for the other players, and this would be the reason why if that is indeed the case. Sometimes I type things into Cards Chat freerolls and I get no responses at all, which makes me suspect the chat isn't seen by others, but I have no real proof of that claim.

I play much of my poker on the play chip side of poker stars, and it is a different experience there. Because players are not driven by greed, by the desire to "make money", play chippers are much more likely to "chat it up". I have wonderful conversations with others on Stars, I play at the highest stakes on the play chip side and it is a terrific community of poker players. Not everyone chats, some remain perfectly silent all the time, but many of us talk nonstop thru the events, I know I sure do. :D

Talking at the table online has indeed changed over the past 20 years, more players today use the functionality to turn chat off, often it can be because they have either experienced abuse at the table or some annoying player who never stops lol. Personally, i like the chat, im able to do this when required without giving any information away, the biggest tell in online poker is a combination of timing tells and bet sizing anyway.
Keep the chat clean and friendly as rock on!
