Tough question and I can think of various scenarios where you wouldn't have luck. The extreme would be to play every hand and never hit the board in any way, which I don't think it's possible. And for that reason Gus Hansen is a good player. Could you never hit the board if you play tight? Sure. Could you overplay? Yes. Could others always get a better hand. Yes. But you can also build an image and bluff others off their better hands in a lot of situations. Rarely in micro buy-ins but possible. Technically though, you could reach 2nd place if you had no luck as you would have to win at least a hand to eliminate the last one, even if you bluffed them until they were left with 1 chip.

I won a freeroll yesterday. In the final 2, this happened in the last two minutes.

I flopped a flush. Villain all in with top pair. Easy call. 97% equity. Runner runner FH. Put me down about 3:1 in chips.

I won a hand and took over the chip lead by about 5 big blinds, then I flopped top pair with 87. Villain overbet shoved again, and I made a bad call. But I catch a runner runner straight to win. 11% equity.

I actually never got my chips all in while behind in the entire tournament until the last hand. Had I won the first hand, this would have been the first time I won a tourney without ever needing to be lucky in an all in, but then... nope.

So yes, luck is everything.

You just can't win without luck, in some degree.

Winning a tournament requires more experience, patience and dedication than luck, in my point of view, whoever plays in a focused way, following the game's algorithm and in purity will not need to rely on luck, but on the bad luck of opponents ...

Knowing how to play poker correctly does not win a tournament. Even the top regulars out of all the tournaments played win about 25% of the time. The luck factor is very important and must be taken into account. Everyone needs to learn how to play correctly.

I don't think so.... You need to be least 20% of the time lucky (a.k.a. the luckiest) to win the tournament. It's not that much assuming that 1vs.1 you should be lucky 50% of the time.
Hmmm, vs 3 opponents you count 33%
Vs 4 is 25%, etc....
if you go until 8 it's only 11% and now these 20% or 50% seems quite a lot, don't you guys think so ?

Yeah, you even need to be lucky enough so that you don't get your aces cracked.

it all depends on the tournament, a tournament with a small number of participants can be won without luck, but you cannot win any major tournament like Sunday million without luck, since there will be many important coinflips and situations when you have to go all-in and your opponent will have senior combination and it will have to be moved

You can win tournaments, with or without luck, It does require a lot of practice, persistence, and concentration, but luck is an element that cannot be measured or called upon when you need it most.
I have won a few, but played thousands of free-rolls and buy-in games, On-line and in Casino Live games, there is nothing like your first ever victory and even now I remember my first, but remembering your close finishes and bad beats are just as important, because we learn by making mistakes, and get better to avoid them in future games.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

Exactly not. There is no way to win even heads up without luck as well.

sometimes you need a bit of luck to help you out but knowledge and skill play the best part

I don't think so, luck will always be necessary, and you definitely have to win some flips
preflop, and badbeat a few times and hope you don't badbete, and they have to high-five
strong against strong hands that will be impossible to throw, like for example a QQQ set vs a KKK set that I saw in an isac haxton tournament vs a chinese they were played while with deep staks.;)

Luck is a component in any game. Of course skill, knowledge and fundamentals are essential but luck is in that equation as well.

if you don't know what your opponents have, then it's luck because anything can happen on the flop, turn, river, and the sheer number of hands to get to the final table alone

I do´t think so. In every tournament there will be situation where you need to be lucky, e.g. coinflips, being a underdog or completing a draw. Especially in large tournaments the amount of luck needs to be bigger to survive large fields.

when i win i was lucky and when i lose i played badly. but i believe that there is a connection between both, although i believe that you should rely on your skills rather than on luck. The skills are something that you can really use, whereas luck is something you cannot control, it comes and goes and the skills remain

Luck or good game

I think luck is an important factor, you can pick up good cards, but the turn and river (especially) can ruin the best flop hand

There is no way to achieve success in a tournament without luck. No matter how hard you try at one point you will get a dose of luck to turn the game around
