I abandoned the idea of making a career in poker but I continue to dream and hope that I could make a good profit in the long term. the most important thing is to continue to have fun when we play.
I'm with you:ridinghor

Hello everyone, I am not a professional poker player, but I have been playing for 7 years. everything was during this time. there were gains and losses of bankroll, tilt, depression, work on oneself. after a long break I lost interest in the game, I like poker, but I came to the conclusion that maybe poker is not for everyone. You can play for the soul or for fun at the weekend with friends, but if you decide to pursue a career as a player, I recommend weighing the pros and cons. since a real passion for the game can distract you from real life. Poker game for the young and the daring.

I agree with you on all except the very last point. Playing high stakes may be for the young and daring, but you can make consistent money in this game without having to take huge risks.

That being said, to succeed in this as a career requires much dedication, study, discipline and sacrifice. And like in other careers there are supplementary things beyond just playing/working which will help you be more successful and have longevity.

for me, I enjoy playing the game part time. I get to have fun, challenge myself, make some money, but also I am not completely dependent on it for my income and so my stress levels stay a bit lower :)

After reading your reasoning, I think that you are right in many respects, but everything depends more on each person individually, each has his own level of discipline and fighting spirit. Therefore, I wish everyone to be disciplined and not lose heart, good luck!
I agree, as they say to each his own:tee:

If you want even a slight chance at making a living off of your game there will be many many sacrifices along the way and possibly unbelievable swings in your game and bankroll. Definitely not for the faint at heart or for those that aren't willing to give up so much to gain so little in life.

Around 8 years ago, I came to the same conclusion friend after a same experience. I now only play for fun and to pass the time. Successful professional poker career is something that very few achieve. At some point, you have to cut your losses.
Maybe I had too high hopes for the game:captain:

Digdug I could'nt agree more, that is me all over, main thing is that we enjoy it.
A lot of us can have a Love Hate relashionship with poker at times.
Sometimes we just need a break to come back fresh and ready for battle.
this is come back:ridinghor

Hi, sometimes I get tired of poker too. But I only play freerolls, and they mostly go in the evening, so I have a lot of free time.

Poker as a career

I am just a recreational player at best, but have a friend that has made a great living out of poker. (10 years now) I talk to him a lot and he tells me that he has never read a poker book or taken any courses to better himself. He doesn't calculate pot odds or fold equity..

Instead he tells me he does well by just waiting for the mistakes. He is good at finding a player who makes the same mistake more than once then focuses on their chips becoming his.. He is patient beyond belief, never tilts and can play for hours without getting bored or discouraged if he is not winning. Plays mostly cash games and sit n go's both online and in casino's..

What are y'all thoughts?? Does he do well by not over complicating? Is it his patience? Are there any pro's like him you think?

Thanks for any input! Kevin

Like all hobbies you have to weigh the pros and cons and work with what is manageable within the context of your lifestyle. The beauty of poker is that you can set realistic goals and limit the stakes you play and really maximize your edge with enough preparation since there are so many options for where you can play.
poker is getting harder and I'm older:D:D:D

You need to have some luck in poker, besides skill. Making poker a career, would be tough. There are alot , of players who could be luckier then yourself. Every hand can win so long as you have luck on your side. Also every hand can lose if you dont have luck.

Hi.
I think poker is a game that has no age restriction. For me, the main thing in this game is positive emotions and a good opportunity to get distracted.
Good luck.
I think young minds still have a certain advantage in view of the fact that technology and education do not stand still, my childhood was without a computer and the Internet, and now it’s even impossible to imagine:confused:

To play as a career we need to no the odds on every street, and calculate all eventualities extremely fast.
Most brains don't work like that thus we will all struggle to win.
and it saddens:(

Very few percent of poker players manage to build career and have good and stable income from being professional players and there is good reason for that. To be successful as pro you need very serious devotion to the game, very cool mind, tenacity and constant will to learn and improve. Many people watch those big tournaments where millions are won and think something like "those players just play cards and win big money - i can do it too". Based on that they rush into poker trying to quickly and easily become rich which is recipe for disaster.

For me good approach is to play poker if you like the game and not with the idea to become rich. Play the game as hobby in your free time, learn the basics, try to improve and if you see progress at some stage in future you can even become pro. If not just play for fun like millions do.
very serious approach! I completely agree with you, you can’t overestimate your capabilities, you just need to be who you are and play responsibly

When I started playing poker, I set goals for myself. Do not play with big buyins and do not spend your money on poker. This means that I did not immediately think about professional poker. The main thing for me is at least some kind of pension supplement. You are right for the young.
poker has a place for everyone, just everyone has their own:)

I agree with you, there are many things that are affected by poker when someone can't control themselves, family, loss of friends, deprivation.

Many players want to make a career in poker, but, unfortunately, all players cannot win !!! Only the best (that is, those who really tried) become professionals !!! Are you sure that you did your best and you didn’t succeed ???
no, I’m sure that I didn’t even do 10% of what is needed and realized in time that I wouldn’t blame the whole world for my failures:albertein

When they are young most people have a dream of becoming a professional, no matter what path they decide that is. Sadly somewhere along that path they realise, or some coach tells them, that they are simply not good enough to fulfill their dream. What then?

poker is magnificent, only the best win, and to be better we must study hard, have solid strategies, study your opponent, etc., so you will be a winner, nothing will fall from the sky for free, poker is for persevering winners .. You have to make sense of poker by studying strategies.
perhaps this answer will be considered as qualitative:D

I am reconciled with the idea that I will not make money from poker, which is why I still play that I like the game and if the miracle happens anyway :) it would be something wow!
thanks for the support:cool:

I still have the dream of being a pro but it’s hard lately to think like that, with so many bad beats and insane players I end up discouraging from poker!
you can’t stop dreaming, but the competition is very big now and to become really the best, you need to work hard

I totally agree with everything you said. Poker is not for everyone. If some one wants to be a professional, he or her must know, that is really hard work, like any other profession if they want live from it. Every thing must be sacrificed for that, time, family, friends...etc. I, like every one here, really love to play, but I’m not willing to put a side my real life for poker, so I’m never going to be a professional, but probably I’m going to play until I die
such a stop loss is very tough, you can play until you get bored:D

play it for hobby the other is luck
too few letters:D

Of course, everyone can,t be successful in poker. I also saw lots of bad things in online poker ,also loosing my hope to win at least a thousand one day in a one tournament.
I,m pretty sure, that live game is pretty different and you can win in this. Anyway, if you are tired from the game, it,s better to try something new. Maybe you can be successful in anything else.
poker with the wrong approach is very emotionally devastating, you need to always see and keep this balance, then maybe everything will be fine

Poker certainly is NOT for everybody.
1) it's a negative sum game
2) it is a mathematical certainty that no more than 10% (or less, rather) of the players can be the players who meaningfully profit from being there, at the tables. It is a mathematical certainty that rest of the prize pool is destined to go broke. So... Yes, poker is for the very few, actually.
even having pumped the skill as much as possible, you can go crazy before significant success comes, which for me was equivalent to the amounts with 3 zeros and more...

I think it is definetly something to think about, but if you want it bad enough then it is worth the grind and the lows!
I think it could be a quality post, but it's not him unfortunately...

Don't despair, hold on. Poker is based on this, someone wins, and someone loses))). Start having fun, don't spend too much, don't count on big wins (at least immediately) - and let there be happiness and inner peace for you:bath:
I did the first 7 years:D, thanks for the support:shakehand

it is really poker that has days that are dazzling. I think for a poker professional who already lives on poker it shouldn't affect so much because they are already used to this type of situation. Now for us who are not but like the game and play it is much more difficult to deal with this type of thing, there are really few who can handle this pressure and can only live on the game.

I would have had a couple of drifts on Sundays heavier than $ 200, but alas, it hasn’t happened yet:D

I love playing poker and I want to move in that direction. But it seems fate or someone else has decided otherwise. In 90% of the cases I play correctly and always think about the hand, the situation and everything related to the moment. But at important moments or late stages of the tournament, everything turns and everything ends with 1-2 hands up to 3 max. last 2 cases i have KD on my pay with ja on flop D103 turn 7 river k and i am done. On the other hand, I am 66 raises for 2.25 blinds, the player raises me again for 3 blinds and I pay a flop of 6DK, I raise a raise for 2300 chips, the other player puts all-in. I open and see that he has AA. I'm super forward. BUT on the bend comes A and the river again A and I'm done. I have hands like that or more in a tournament or 1-2 that finish the whole game.
that's the way things have been going for me for 6 months now
this is poker salt, how much does it take to go around the variance while it bends you?

Poker for many is a pleasant distraction from work, day to day life. I don't work or live for poker per se, I live and then poker is on the list of distractions, hobbies.

I don't think it would be good for me, mentally, to always have to be "playing", always being "on." If I can't have an "off" period of time, then there is no enjoyment.
for me it is a little more than just a hobby, but I understand you, for this I have sports, fishing and friends

Freerolls are always there for you.
not always good need to earn:D

No worries dude. Making poker a carrier nowadays is extremely difficult. Just play it as a hobby.
