Yeah scourrge nailed it on the game show type stuff with money utility. Money in the real world is much like a tournament, every dollar you make is worth less than the last one. I guess there can be some exceptions where you need a certain amount to be able to make some profitable investments, but for the most part if you are offered 2 equal ev options you should always take the lower variance one. Most game shows however offer you spots where taking the big risk is +ev but utility-wise it might be +ev to take the guaranteed smaller amount.

For example say I offered you either a billion dollars, or a 50% shot at ten billion dollars with the other 50% you getting nothing. Obviously the ev of the latter is 5 times the ev of the former but anyone not incredibly rich would be retarded to take the latter.

Wikipedia: "In May 1915, Kern was due to sail with Charles Frohman from New York to London on board the RMS Lusitania, but Kern missed the boat, having overslept after staying up late playing poker."

I love this guy.

Oh shit... Just read further down the page... The boat he missed? It sunk. Brag? Beat? Variance? Somehow there's one of those in there.

Wait a minute? You seriously didn't recognize the sinking of the ****ing Lusitania as one of the worst incidents of the 1st World War? What's wrong with our schools? It is one of the things that pulled the US into the war. Something like a thousand people died when it (a cruise ship btw) was sunk by a German sub.

What I should probably clarify before everyone goes "holy hellz, da schoolz!!" is that I didn't actually read the name of the ship. It was ****ing 5am or something and I didn't go to sleep last night, and I was crunching out a paper that I didn't start until yesterday. So suffice it to say I was skimming at best, saw the word "poker," and that was that.

But yes, blah blah schools today.

Edit: Yes. I am cranky.

Maybe it's just me. I mean I do find the 1st and 2nd World Wars fascinating and I have read a lot on both. I do however remember being taught of the sinking and the slogan "Remember the Lusitania" which was used as a recruitment tool when the US was gearing up to enter the War.

I'm with duggs here. During my schooling, I never ever got taught about the Civil War, or WW1 or WW2. I am sure that was not the plan, but it worked out that way.

One semester ended pre Civil War, and the next took up with Re-construction. And never got to WW1. Depression and WW2 were for those showing interest in history or some shit, and those never got covered. Maybe they thought I would learn it all by osmosis from TV or movies.

I did get involved in cultural humanities in college, but again, missed those 3 era's. I did watch all of Ken Burns series on the Civil War and feel caught up enough to not consider myself totally ignorant about the CW. And there have been enough documentaries and dramas about WW2 to learn me anything I really needed to know, but WW1 is still a void for me.

The school system did that cycle at least 3 times before I graduated from HS.

Anything after Eisenhower I have lived and don't need no teachin bout.

Of course. :) And I obviously feel silly for having read over the quote twice and not paid enough attention to the name of the ship. But in my defense, my paper was just related to this guy (Jerome Kern), not to the Lusitania. :D

My teaching was focussed on the reasons for it kicking off, life in the trenches and the effects of WW1 on post-war Britain, social responsibility and voting and such. No idea about some American boat.

I've also learned more about both world wars since school than at it.

I always find them interesting but never actively seek out material to read, some recommendations would be great please.

When we covered modern history we focussed on our operations in WW1 i.e. Gallipoli, we also covered our own national history, so the tribal wars, Wahine disaster, Napier earthquakes and the springboks tour, I guess history tends to focus on what was most important to those given people. We also focussed on the cultural effects on the war and its after effects on the indigenous people and the settlers.

Last week i was chilling with some class mates and I was shocked how much european history they knew, and I was incredibly hazy/completely oblivious to heaps of it. I guess is a regional thing, but definitely something I would like to bring up to an acceptable level.

The beginning of the age of sail up until the start of WW1 is much more interesting anyway.
