I always encourage members to play in freerolls, but not for reasons of winning. Online freerolls are a window into what I call the idiocy of
online poker tournaments - and, by the way, that includes my own.
I do things in freerolls that I would never do in tournaments at a real casino. That is because, as I have said before in posts here at Cardschat, I use online freeroll tournaments merely to practice for offline tournaments. Sometimes online, (read many times) I go all-in with a 62o or something just as crazy just to see what happens. Of course, if you play with rag
hands like that, the
odds are heavily that you will not win. But, surprisingly I have won at times nonetheless.
If you really want to profit from tournaments, and I say this knowing that you can also lose your shirt, learn the game - online or offline - and go to a real brick and mortar casino that you trust. Meaning, a house that through experience you have learned is honest. Be prepared to bring a minimum bankroll of $300. That is where - and I speak from experience - you will profit if indeed you have really learned the game.
My advice, if you enjoy the game as I do, is not to play at all times. Where I play, I do so after midnight. I do this because, where I play, that is the time when the real poker players - the ones who earn their living from playing - show up for a game, And, we play all night long. I like to play with those who really know the game, and, of course, I like to profit from such players because it gives me a sense of satisfaction.
I do not like to play (with a few exceptions) during the day because that is when a lot of good ordinary people come to the casino with their hard earned cash just to try their luck and have a good time. I do not see them as much competition, and for that reason I would take no pleasure or satisfaction in taking their money or their good time away, and also for the reason that I want to enjoy the game playing equals while profiting. This is important to me, profiting from equals, although I know many would not hesitate to take the chips of those whom they would consider "fish."
Yup, if you want to profit, seriously, practice, really learn the game, and go a little crazy online like I do, but the
real money is at the casino. At least, it is for me. That is where I really enjoy playing. But, that is my way. Others have their own way of doing things, and I do respect their way also. Don't look at my way as an example of the path you might take to profit. Look at the champions. They don't waste much time online, except where being bound by contract makes them money - win or lose.
One last thing. My casino does have tournaments on weekends in the daytime. They are not free. I have entered only 7 such tournaments, (the few exceptions I mentioned before) and I have won 3. In one of those tournaments, I took out in a final showdown a so-called television celebrity poker champion for whom I have absolutely no respect because he got angry that he did not win. He jumped up from his chair, and apparently called me an idiot, something, lucky for him, I did not hear. Why? Because - honestly - I was busy gathering many thousands of chips that were shortly converted to cash. Anyhow, good luck to you.
