The pocket pair dominates the single-mast connectors, so you have to be careful. well, it depends on where to play)) . personally I prefer suited high cards and raise 2-3 BB preflop. here's an example I have often found the opposite. for example, in poker stars pocket pair even though aces does not give advantages because it is there very weak hand because once the poker room will collect the other player is much better combination of cards. poker stars killed I have fun playing poker

about call on preflop

I think that position that there are only two decisions - raise or fold it's true only after river.

I'm not sure I agree. In the first instance, calling when the raiser was from early position, it was noted that medium suited connectors have decent equity against the early position range. While this may be true, you still need to hit a straight or flush to know yourself that you are (most likely) good. Hitting a pair still means you are often beat by a better pair, and there's not much you can do to find out if you're beaten. I think the actual equity of the hand is much better than perceived equity because of the uncertainty around some of your winning hands

Excellent article, very detailed I have instructive for me, although in my opinion Never pay all in pre flop most of the time unless you have premium cards and a good position, but it is best to play with the position and choose good range of hands , the type of bet is equally important .. it has a lot of fabric to cut this article.

very good article, when I started in poker, I studied a lot of basic plays, starting hands ranges, position, stack. but I had no practical knowledge of these strategies. Today I have some volume of game to understand in practice these strategies and when we play without paying attention to these basic rules, we end up using only luck that does not help in the regularity of our result

I'm sorry. But the old methods do not work in modern poker. This is my opinion and I do not wish to seduce anyone.

The position is very important in the hand. In the beginning, I did not pay attention to it at all and played everything from the UTG. It was terrible. But when you are in position and you bet the latter, then you become more mobile and it becomes easier to collect a combination on the turn and river. Thank you for the article.

The good article and I agree with those that written. Strategy games on preflop helps. Many players ignore the ranges and relative strength of their hands, resulting in wrong decisions and endless losses. When assessing an opponent's range, you should always take into account all available information about him, his actions on previous rounds of trading, as well as represent the hands that he could play in this way. The better you know what the opponent can be on hand, the better your decisions will be.

When the hand starts, and if the aggressive players have any pair at all, they raise automatically, and sometimes i lose with AK or any pair below 9s... I learn to not go all in in the first hand even if I have AK, but if I have AA or KK I’ll probably play the hand, but during the preflop we can see where the big cards are... sometimes the villain has nothing and you win with A9 but we ll never know who you are playing against...

Playing mostly tourneys, and I must omit that I do not frame my style and strategy within the standard preflop ranges :p
What the most is ruling my game is my hand, position, stage of tournament, my chances to get ITM, the opponent's style and records and ways to exploit them :)

Now seriously, I am following most of the recommendations mentioned in the article, but every tourney is different, depends on blinds time increase - you have to accommodate fast, otherwise you are out soon or later - without any earnings :top:

I think that depends on many factors, how much have a blinds, aggressiveness and the number of players at the table and the structure of the tournament. When the players are limping, the raise is very effective and offten knows win hand before the flop...

As an amateur that plays mostly micro-stakes cash games, I call more often than suggested in the article with lesser hands.

For tournaments, I do follow most of the standard advice given. Although, I do disagree that calling automatically means you have a weaker hand. It could just mean that a player is trying to be a little tricky.

That point is very important, winner players are the exception but enven so we can see players show some aversion to theory and they carry on losing money playing by themselves looser strategies. Theory is not an invention from an ideal and wonderful poker world, it is about past experiences mathematically analized. So beginners has no experience, they have just one reference: the theory.

Very important article. IMO when we play tournament, we should count stack with number M, not with big blids. Stack M is more detailed and consider ante.

M=(stack) / (SB+BB+all ante).

When my stack is under M8, I play only push or fold. Absolutely very importent is our position what you`re mentioning in the article. I think that for tournaments, we should be more specific about the push phase. I recommend playing with M numbers with this range and our position:
push.png

6off=UTG1; 5off=UTG2; 4off=MP1; 3off=MP2; HiJ=MP3, CO; BTN; SB.
Preflop call is OK too, when our pot odds preflop is good. In this we can call with very loose. Example when I`m in SB and I see 4 limp, I like playing in this call very loose with trash cards, becouse my pot odds to call is very good and very cheap. Preflop call is not good when our stack is in push phaze. Sometimes in push phaze, we can give a tray play mini bet with AA and never limp preflop.

When low blinds I play x3 BB to x4 BB. I see that you recommend in article to 5 BB. IMO 5 BB is good when tournament is deep. When turbo 5 BB can be too much. When late phaze I play x2.5 BB to x2.2 BB. I agree that our stack is big, we should we can loosen up and take more chances. This is OK, if we manage good post flop.

Wow, this article hits directly into the worst element of my poker play.

I will use the subscription to this thread as a quick link to read the article a second, maybe a third time.

Thank you for posting it here !

completely in accordance with this article, The first thing I take into account to do this is to look at the position and the size of my stack and the stack remaining players to play. it usually happens that when calling there is always a player that forces you to throw your cards, por lo tanto siempre trato de ir con cartas con las cuales voy a estar dispuesto a pagar una subida.

Great read and some info in it that I will apply to my own game. Critical factor is the position and especially stack sizes which some players dont acknowledge especially in tournaments.

This article bring us real useful advises. For me, the best proof that this works is watching another players, specially in micro stakes MTTs. I often see loose player limping or raising out of position or paying raises with weak hands. Sometimes they have a good start, but almost never get ITM.I think the LAG style is very effective, but only for the one who have the necessary skills to play this way. This kind of player can open from early position with almost every hand, but I think this is not for a beginner.
Nice post.

That's a great article, I agree with what's been written there.
I think that as a cold-call is a passive move and in order to be successful in poker you should stick to aggressive moves, this means that your calling range has to be small and well structured and you should rarely wide it up. As it was stated in article you may occasionally do it and call with a rather weak hand, if you noticed certain passive postflop tendencies of your opponent that you want to exploit but then you should beware of the players that act behind you, their playing styles and size of stacks. The same thing applies if you have a strong hand, one you would normally 3bet, but as you think that the players sitting behind you are lags or short stacks that might squeeze or push, you call in order to set a trap. But generally one should not call the open raise that much and stick to either 3bet or fold.

Thank you fot the article! Here is represented very useful and high-quality information. But this theme isn`t new for me. Sometimes I use ranges from PokerStratagy.com Equilab. To my mind it`s realy helpful soft. But I often meet players, who absolutely don`t care about ranges, they can call your bet with any two and I advise this players to learn this article and start to play appropriate poker (in case, if your goal is not only fun, but profit)

We often feel that we either have to fold or re-raise to a pre-flop raise in front of us. But there are times when calling is okay.

Read this article and let's discuss what our ranges are for calling:

Pre-Flop Calling Ranges

Please specify if you are referring to cash games or tournaments because it won't be the same for both.

Do you agree with the article?
Dakota, the structure of the PS game has changed to such an extent that books released by professional players until 2014 make no sense. Aggression. We need to adapt to it. This is new in poker and works.

In the tournaments I usually play, it usually goes reise when I'm in position BB, SB or dealer,Usually in the initial stage of the tournament goes 3-4 bb, later 2-3bb in these positions,In other positions I play 2-3bb in the beginning, usually everything depends on the player I play against if I stay longer on the same table.

A very good article. From myself I want to add my game will also depend on what I play. On freerolls, respectively, I will often look at the flop. Call is a good solution if you feel that you can outplay an opponent on almost any flop.

Very useful and quality article for beginners just to start playing and try to make not so many mistakes!I play mtsng and think that decisions about ranges optimally should be based on the info about your opponent and his playstyle. This is the main point .
