Skill plays a major role in Poker Performance, luck is only in the brief past summer moments. In a nutshell, a skill at a distance will constantly bring profit, luck only at a short distance.

How is the performance of a poker player evaluated? Is skill and knowledge more important? How much does luck and variance influence? A good hand with a bad decision can make you a tournament. What do you think?

I'd say its like 75% skill and 25% luck, it really hard to win anything without a bit of luck, but without any skill its almost impossible.

Yes skill is very important but luck factor of your opponent being all in and having
no control of the run out can be frustrating.

For sure you should know how to play poker and have skills but i think also the best player in the world always needs some luck in a hand.

Honestly, imo i think there is skill and luck in it...

you got to get lucky to get good cards and win flips etc

but with bluffing or getting your opponent off a good hand is skill
reading their hand is skill knowing when you're behind is skill
getting value from a weak hand is skill

all these things i find having a skill

but the luck lays with getting good cards and winning the flips thats just my opinion

wonder how other people look on it.

How is the performance of a poker player evaluated? Is skill and knowledge more important? How much does luck and variance influence? A good hand with a bad decision can make you a tournament. What do you think?

The eternal question. There are many types of poker and can be judged differently. The one all of us recreational players think of immediately is tournament poker. YES, within reason, anyone can win a big pool multi-table tourney. I think it is safe to say that you NEED some luck to win a big tournament. Take the main event throughout the years we have watched people win who are not considered very good poker players.

Where SKILL absolutely shows up, is in a player's long term results. This is in both Cash and Tourney poker. The better you are the more you will win in the long run. If you don't believe you need skill, go play on-line $5/$10 NL1000 for a few thousand hands and report back with your winrate (smile) Even zoom $500 is populated by very skillful players.

In my opinion this is what makes poker so great, you can get lucky and win an MTT, you can have a great time playing at your local casino for a $100 tourney. Then if the poker "bug" grabs you, you can begin to study and work on your skill and your on your way to either a hobby or a career or a once in awhile break from the everyday. Poker can be many things to many different players and yes, there is a skill level.

Both skill and luck must be present when playing poker. If you do everything right, luck will come to you. There are many tips on the Internet to help you improve your poker game. Here are some of the main points in my opinion - Be smart, Be insensitive, Control your emotions, Be honest with yourself.

Skill and knowledge above luck!

But I tell you that I know people who have the ability to play with luck and with the wallet

These types of players are the most difficult to face, because they put all the chips in the center of the table.

There is no black and white answer. Luck is a huge factor, especially short term, but skill over the long run will make the difference between a losing player and a winning player. When replaying the epic Chris Moneymaker main event footage, it is clear that Chris was on an amazing run of luck to win the wsop Main Event. He has since had some minor wins and finishes but nothing even coming close to his first unbelievable win.

A good hand won't help. The decision is more important than the hands.

luck in poker

There is a lot of both, I find that playing live for some reason I tend to consistently fair better and skill plays more of a dominant role. Online skill still factors in greatly but you run into a whole lot more situations where insane statistical improbabilities occur where you are trusting software to give truly random results. I think its naive to believe that they do and the people who guilt trip others for even suggesting it and say its because they just aren't good enough, I think that's something that benefits online sites and that they can kind of hide behind. That being said online poker is still far better than no poker at all and its a good place to get great practice in as well as win good money if you can just endure the absurd variance. Anyone who tries to convince me its 100% natural variance online I will look you dead in the eyes and laugh. You can be naive if you want to be. But yes you can still win there ironically enough, just need more luck than in live play when its physical interaction with cards and players and no software medium between it.

Skill is better

Of course, luck does play a role, but knowing when and how to play a good hand is the key to moving forward and ending well a game or a tourney, and for it only skill really allow that. ;)
