Hi, I'm 16 and think I've become a serviceable poker player, especially for my age. But I'm wondering if I'm the best player at my table should I win every time? I'd say I win about 7 out of 10 times in both my regular games and I'm wondering should I win every time? I just can't help but think since the pros like hellmuth and Ivey probably mop the floor with lesser players then that means I should. So I guess what I'm wondering is how often should I expect to win?

Of course not. In my opinion, you generally have a wrong perception of the essence of the matter.

In the long run the best players tend to be more profitable, however the best players are not always the winners. There are random odds in poker that cannot be avoided by any player.

Well, it depends on who you play at the table, if most of the opponents are fish, then you should always win.

But if there are better players at your table, it will be difficult for you to win, it's not always about winning, but about reaching a better level every time you play

Does the best player always win? Of course not! There are good and bad players, but in poker a good player can perfectly be beaten by the worst player in the world.

Poker is a good game, but I don't think you should really be dealing with that at the age of 16. There are many things in life that are more important in this age.

well, I think age doesn’t matter, you can play like a god, but very often it depends on luck and luck in an online game, especially in tournaments

If the best player always won I would be a rich MF, but since I get donked by morons all the time I would say, the answer is an EMPHATIC no!:motz:

In most cases the best player should win in the long run, but the better hand doesn't
always win

Of course not, luck is the great equalizer in poker. But in the long run, the better player will always have the better winning percentage.

If the best player always won, there wouldn't be that many players. You will not play at the table with the pros, knowing in advance that he will defeat you? This is the beauty of poker - everyone can win the hand. the only question is how often.

No that’s is not possible, because it’s a game of luck. Luck can’t be always on his side no matter how godly he plays. Yes, skill can give him winnings in the long run, but again he will loose some of his winnings. There is a quote saying “If luck didn’t exist, I would win every time.” or something close to it.

Such a thing is not possible. Whoever has patience and whoever is lucky wins. That's how the same people would always win.

Who says you are the Best?
Sure you might be able to win more often at one particular venue (Pub, Club or Casino) but what makes you the best? I was always in the top four in our Pub Poker League for six years running and that is twenty four seasons. But I never considered myself to be the best player in my local, I was good but not the best player.
The funny thing is a player who thinks he is best will inevitably get shot down in flames by a better player, just like the gun-fighters in the old Wild West, there is always someone better and faster.
Just like Phil Hellmuth and Phil Ivey, they have lost some big events in the past. In one particular game that comes to mind Hellmuth was in a heads up game with Tom Dwan and Tom raises with pocket eights, Phil responds with a 3X bet and Tom shoved all in, Phil calls with pocket Aces and gets river-ed when Tom hits Trips. It really does not matter who thinks they are a better player, what really matters is you can lose just as often as win.
7 games out of 10 is not enough to judge how good you are at poker, try winning 700 out of 1,000 or even more, and then tell us how good you are.

The "better player" has a much bigger advantage in cash games than in tournaments, especially freeroll, where lunacy and variance are so dominant.

I couldn't give a better definition.

Expect the expected..

The only thing guaranteed is your effort, how you played the cards you got, vs the others at the table.
Finally, to have balance, when you play poker, don't expect anything; the luck often overrides the skill.

The one thing to expect is the exception, the one-off, that goes against the odds, that is worth remembering for future games.

You know, it depends on how many chips are given initially, that is, the more Big Blinds everyone has at the beginning and the slower the blinds grow, the more chances and high-level players, because here luck means less and a very cool player can win every time, and in tournaments where there are very few chips initially and the blinds grow quickly, everything comes down to a successful all-in, and here even a good player cannot guarantee a victory.

Luck in poker is important.
You can not win a poker tournament without it (winning coin flips for example).

That being said - skill is also important as it reduces the luck. Knowing *when to make moves* is just as important.

Luck can also vary by tournament type. I’ve found from my personal experience hypers and turbos require a lot of luck to hit the final table as BB begin to outpace stack sizes at the end of those type of tournaments.
