It is a difficult question. I played a lot of tournaments and sometimes I lost a lot of chips early because of fishes betting many chips with worst hands and won. Otherwise if I registered late I had no chance to earn enough chips. So my strategy is now to register at the beginning of the tournament and fold often if someone raise many chips even if I have a good hand because I often lost although I hold a good hand.

I don`t like late registration at tournements. I just sometimes late register for some satellites with rebuy, there you can play often against crazy players and win even with a late registration very fast a good stack.

i like too late reg, lets say 20min tops, not 40-50 min in because the blinds are too high, and you will go out quick, because your short stacked

The concept of hourly comes into play here. You'd much rather win $100 in 2 hours than in 4 hours, right? Well what if you earn $90 in 2 hours instead of $100 in 4 hours? Still better to go the 2 hour route in terms of your hourly wage.

So if you have nothing better to do with your time, you should go for the full $100, but if you can spend the time you would've spent early in a tournie playing other profitable tournies or doing anything else you value, late regging is best. How late to late reg really comes down to how much time you save versus how much equity you give up mixed in with how much you could earn doing something else.

Also granted the above are mainly considerations for a pro. I personally like to pretty much max late reg when I play MTTs on ACR just because the late reg periods are so long so I'd just as well come in for 10 big blinds once half the field as busted and a double up gets me an average stack. When I do buy in earlier I often build up a nice stack but find a way to donk it off and end up re-entering for 10bb anyways so I might as well go for the shortstacking strategy and if it doesn't work out, move onto the next one. If I had 6 hours to grind though, I'd just fire up some tournies from the start, but hen I open up the client with just a couple hours to burn, late reg is fine by me.

I like playing from the beginning of the tournament because the blinds are less and it is easier to build my stack in the beginning of the tournament. But, I haven't played late reg that often so maybe I should test playing late reg more to see if it is more beneficial to my game.

Always register on late registration, the time is different, depends on the structure and type of tournament.

with late reg you wont be seeing any cheap flops, its always going to cost you a shove to see it or close to half your stack as others on table will bully you off any limpos you may be trying, having said that, if the gambler in you doesn't mind shoving straight away then do late reg, but after 2 double ups play your normal game, its a donkey move but can pay off really well as i have used this method many a time and done well from it, plus it puts a stamp on your head straight away that your a donkey and willing to shove with shit when really your not(winky winky)

my thoughts

so who prefers to late reg and who prefers to be butt in seat and start? i used to like to get there on time, but after playing some of these bigguns late reg seems to be the way to go... especially for online play .. in some of these online tourns u can late reg get big quick and next thing you know cash... ill be doing more research but was just curious

Me I prefer to be sign in and take your seat. And people should not be allow to sign up late. which would be nice.

As for me, it's all about late reg., because it's really hard for me to play w/ big stack. When I go in from the start, I earn a decent stack most of the times and lose it often because of overconfidence (that's a terrible leak and the reason I play MTTs very rarely). With late reg I still can collect a big stack but there will be less time till bubble, so that's a perfect strategy for me. I think it's really individual thing, depends on one's style of play.

It depends on what type of tournament are you planning to join with, but I do prefer early registration for there's always a promo at the beginning of any casino games.

I prefer to catch the end of late registration, they are more likely to reach the ITM if you play well.
