Pretty sure Apple offers a free compiler.
Apple provides Xcode as a free OSX/iOS IDE/compiler, but you must run it on a Mac and you must pay $100/year for a developer key to publish to the App store. So iOS app development is definitely not free unless you already have a Mac and only intend to look at your app in the emulator. :)

New update V1.2a. Just a few little refinements rather than new features for this one.

*Screen no longer locks in-between hands
*Removed Notes header so there is more room for notes on small screens
*Updated Vpip/PFR to follow HM rules (walks in the BB don't count towards VPIP/PFR)

Next Update will be saving/loading. I'll probably make that the final android update bar perhaps a change to the graphics so the buttons are labelled with 'raise' 'call' 'fold'. I'll need to write up my report and get my exams done. Come june I'll develop this for the iphone.

Neat idea but it seems like a whoooole lot of work for not much gain over just paying a little bit of attention to your table.

Very interesting. Reassures me I took the right degree if mobile and app use is about to go through the roof.
Also reconfirms the whole android/ios developer preference.

Neat idea but it seems like a whoooole lot of work for not much gain over just paying a little bit of attention to your table.

Thanks

Most hands are 1 or 2 clicks I don't even notice I'm doing it anymore.
I doubt even regular live players could pin point everyone's vpip/pfr/steal/3bet within a reasonable degree of accuracy.

Online players such as myself have no hope, I'm amazed at how loose and passive everyone at the table is. Even people I may have once deemed good tags are coming up as 21/12 or that old man who barely played a single hand for the first hour was just running card dead and shows up as a 36/12 by 50 hands. Not to mention online players are used to making many assumptions about how certain players (69/50 or 12/4 etc) play postflop and having these assumptions available is very handy when your never going to have a huge amount of convergence on the players round you.

But ye to keep things at just a couple of clicks and based on the low poll results I'll cancel my original plans to add postflop stats to this as it would treble the input required of the user and I find postflop is when I need to actually think about a hand. This sound alright? (I'll write this and any other reasons in my report).

cool project.

prolly banned in all the casinos near here tho.

Ye there's been a lot of mention of this. There's an app similar to mine (would love someone to try both out if they already have it).
Donkey Tracker has 1700 downloads and not one of those people came back to the thread and said "I got banned from my local casino" or even "They wouldn't let me use this".

I mention this only to make clear that I did consider this prior to development and came to the conclusion it would be fine based on the above. Having read yours and others comments I will re-evaluated whether to sell this (might have a non-US release or market it for homegames in the US). Don't think I'm not listening to you all. Again my priority is to get a good grade from this so I fully encourage this discussion.

**Btw the DonkeyTracker thread is closed due to this

Been a bit slow on the updates this week as I've been in Amsterdam.
I'll try and get one last update done this week with saving and loading and some new graphics.

What do you think of swapping these.

Maybe thicken the words a bit?

fwiw I highly doubt people would get banned by using this app as long as they don't make it obvious(using it midhand, broadcasting it etc). Usually most casino's, at least the ones ive been to, are cool with cell phone usage as long as youre not actually playing in the hand.

I really like the idea of this app because it seems SO much simpler to actually enter in the decisions with the 1-2 click type of system. I have a HUD on my iphone but it takes too much time to enter stuff in so I just don't use it at all.

I'll probably switch the font over tomorrow, going to get it on my test devices see how it looks first. This saving and loading stuff is a lot more difficult than I thought it would be and is taking up all my time atm.

What is the name of your HUD? I'm gathering up a list of other HUDs for my report. So far I've only come across Poker Income (horribly complicated, primarily a bankroll tracker, and HUD isn't available for android) and DonkeyTracker (Lovely graphics but very basic and so many buttons misclicks are common on small/medium screens).

app

I have to say that app is really great you came up with and probably a bit of work but I never played in a casino where you could use your cell phone at the table. Simply put people are playing for money and don't want any distractions of any type so you see why casinos ban cell phones at the tables. Crazyhorse

How many players would you be looking to save?

Should I make 10 save slots? 30? 50? 100?
With ten I could make a pop-up you can scroll through and select which player to load. Any more and I'd create an entire new screen with dozens of players names set out in rows.

Kinda torn between how to display the different players we have saved / can load.

Auto Complete Text Field
Something like this would be nice and simple:
LbEnJ.png

However if Live players are anything like me rather than ask people's names I give the people at the table names based on their appearance or conversations e.g. "polish tag", "Old Nit", "Fishy Plumber". These impromptu names may be a little tricky to remember.
The plus side would be we'd have ample space to fit as many players on to the load screen as we want.

Player Selection Screen
The alternative would be to have a new screen come up entirely made up of 4 rows of 6 buttons each with a players name written on it

[smelly lady] [Hot Blonde] [Fishy Plumber]
[Geeky Nit ] [Asian Maniac] [...............]
[...............] [.................] [...............]

It would look tidier than this and the screen will scroll when it fills up. It's messier but will allow for name recognition.

Please let me know which you think is more suitable. Thanks

Ach an offline tester said the opposite. Might ask my lecturer and toss a coin on which one to start on in the mean time :p

The big disadvantage with the auto-complete is that you cannot browse through the whole list, you would have to remember what nicknames you gave your player or at least the first letter.
Looks so much nicer than flooding the screen with buttons though.

Def let me know when you get it working for iPhone, I have heard of Apps like this but not saught them out too much because I feel like I get the %'s pretty close on my own and the fact that I have to use it at the table. It would be intereting to figure out how close I am to accurate on my reads.

I don't see why you can't use a list control to display all players, with a search/filter control at the top to incrementally search/filter the list as you type? A number of iPhone apps do this, and I find it hard to believe that Android isn't capable of similar out of the box. At worst you code it yourself.

As an example, here's what it looks like with the Contacts XL app on my iPhone:

When you start typing in the search box at the top, the list narrows to those entries containing the characters you type.

That looks ideal. I don't believe android has something like that built in but I'll have a look round. May be a bit out of my depth to code myself but I'll give it a shot.
