Android Mobile- Live HUD - Poll

As seen in my previous thread I've pretty much got the Apps basic functionality up and running and no errors have been reported as off yet.
The next stage in making this will be adding features. I'm making this thread to launch a poll I'd like you to vote on. General comments on features can go in either thread, I'm hoping to merge them both once I close the poll.

Get voting and I'll get coding :)
If you have any additional ideas for features I'll add them to the poll if possible.

I would never recommend C as a starter language. Maybe C++ if you're using STL or Boost and don't get into pointers and memory management. Once you're advanced enough, C is awesome and you can do some things you can't really do in any other language short of assembler. I'll still occasionally write C code to supplement Java, .NET, PHP, etc. when I need some really low-level access or speed. And of course anything for native iOS you're writing mostly in C or some flavor thereof (Objective-C or C++).

I think Java is a good choice, but like a lot of other languages it's easy for beginners to learn bad habits and poor implementation, which leads to frustration and incorrect perceptions about the language. Java being "slow" is a common misconception -- it's partly based on the fact that in its earliest days it was slow, but modern JVMs with state of the art JIT compilers can run Java code about as fast as C++ (I've seen benchmarks which actually show some things are faster in Java). But it must be written correctly, something beginners seldom get right. So it's an easy enough language to learn, but takes time and experience to do well. Kinda like Hold'em (easy to learn, lifetime to master).

I'd also recommend PHP and Python as a good starter language. And some of course would recommend VisualBasic -- which I loathe -- or C#, which is better but I still prefer Java.

Really stuck on names atm. I'm not very creative. Pretty ashamed of my name ideas so far.

PokerDex?
LiveHUD?
FishFinder?
PokerHUD?
AceHUD?
PokerProwler?

If I ever was to sell this the name would need to describe what it is I'd imagine as it's not obvious. Having to have poker HUD or mobile in the name kinda kills any creativity though.
That and I should decide on a name soon so I can make a nice logo. Not really liking the yellow spade. Logo would need to be linked with the name.

Well AceHUD might cause confusion with some old timers (and potential trademark issues) since AcePokerHUD was the predecessor to PT3's HUD.

FishFinder sounds familiar, like a poker product I've seen before. Too busy to Google for it atm. So similar issues could arise. Speaking of Google, that's probably your easiest way to find products with same/similar names.

I agree that "LiveHUD" isn't a very colorful name, but does succinctly describe what it is, so out of your list I would tend to favor that one.

Maybe you should do a LifeHUD next. Just lots of random stats to keep track of and classify the people you meet. Maybe divide it up into the BroHUD and the HoHUD with stats like:

Owes Me Money (expressed as a $$ value)
I Owe Money
Owes/Owed a Favor
Helped Me Move
Returned/Didn't Return Text/VM/Email
Paid for Lunch/Beer
etc.

Then when you run into someone you haven't seen in a while you just look them up through the contacts on your phone and their stats are shown. Might save you a few $$s or keep you from hooking up with a previously known psycho chick?

lol I was actually considering a lifeHUD in a sense. Was thinking of making a program to keep track of calories, units and ciggys. Units would be the one I'd find useful, I keep trying to cut down how much I drink but never remember how much I've drunk to keep track of it.

The post-flop play was at first one of my main priorities. Those with live experience do you think you would have the time or patience for postflop play?
Things are going to converge real slow other than the c-bet stat, and we'll be putting in up to 4 times more input.

I'll probably do the 3bet/steal stats and player notes first thing next week unless the vote turns around dramaticly. I will defo do the saving/loading but it must come last as any stats/notes I add also need to be saved so I want to do this once the stats are set in stone.

Just released an update.
3bet stats and steal stats are now included. Give them a whirl let me know if you find any bugs.

Also let me know if your android prompts you to update.
Thanks.

Nope, I went to 'My applications' in Google Play and it was listed at the top with two others that needed an update, but it didn't do it in the background automatically, despite me having that option ticked.

And imo, keep it simple. PokerHUD says it all.

Dont use pokerdex as the name.

Its a hand held computer that gives you all the stats about different pokemon.

Damn 2nd time that's happened.
Maybe google takes 24hours to auto-update, it did take a while before the update even registered.

Next time you update it, I'll wait for a couple of days to see if it happens, rather than doing it manually.

I'll probably go with this. I'd rather people get confused and think it's for mobile online play than not know what live is and not even link the App with poker.

I know I'd have made a logo with pikachu with spades for eyes.
I'm the king of terrible marketing ideas. :p

Idk, im interning at a company who developed a mobile app and that's what got me interested in learning a language. As far as you not getting enough downloads, I'm not sure if it's common knowledge but people who I work with talk about how iphone users are more likely to download apps that android users for some reason. Even with our app we have two or three times more people using it on the iPhone than android devices

It's incredibly pronounced with poker apps. When I first checked the alternative to my app 'Donkey Tracker' had less than 10 sales via android and 1700 through iphone. I defo chose the wrong platform :p
That and all my time is spent fighting with androids interface, the poker related coding has been both easy and fun.

Don't understand the huge difference when it comes to poker apps though.
(cycle between android and iphone on that link)

More iPhones about?

I recall android over took them in terms of phone sales a year back. Iphone users must just be bigger fans of apps.

As of ending Q4 2011 they're in a statistical dead-heat. iPhone surged and caught up with Android after the 4S release. Which is pretty remarkable when you consider the sheer number of Android handsets available on virtually every carrier in the world (unlike iPhone), and often at free or steeply discounted prices.

Add in ipad sales, which continues to dominate Android in the tablet market (although that gap was closing a bit pre-IPad 3, not sure how iPad 3 may have changed that) and it's easy to imagine that iOS has a larger overall share.

Plus, I expect you'll find app sales/downloads vary between demographics. Tech/geek users, for instance, may favor Android and get a lot of apps. I find poker players, OTOH, tend to be less technical despite the internet poker boom, and probably favor the more generally consumer friendly iPhone while probably not buying a ton of apps either.

lol windows mobile dying a slow death.
Interesting post. My June will likely be spent rewriting my java files into objective C. Should be easier than making the program from scratch and xib files are a dream to work with compared to XML and relative layouts imo.

Player Notes [x]
Steal & 3bet stats [x]
Saving/Loading [ ]

I'll do this next. The player notes is pretty simple atm. Let me know if you'd like any changes to it. An icon to show a notes been made on a player or listed notes etc.

Just released V1.2
We now have player notes.

Hold down any seat to bring up their notes.
Let me know if you'd like this feature touched up a little. It's pretty basic atm I guess i could make it look smarter or add an icon to show you have notes on someone or set a players name to the header etc.

Do you think the notes would look better without the header saying notes?
Or maybe a header saying the players name or as a default if we haven't created a name (This will be added with the saving/loading) the seat number.
