I think this ^ (along with INTENSE security measures) is the only way that online poker will grow (& of course having an International playing field instead of so many being segregated as it is now).
The article states that if you'd like to shell out $4,250 you can discover more about it. GIve me a break, lol.
Honestly I wish the article/study were true but I see it going the other direction. Currently RTA is a HUGE problem for online poker!
Also, the player pools are infested with sharks! It's difficult to keep even the devoted, best players playing online poker (because it is so much more difficult to profit from it.... regulars playing $100 abi to squeak out a small ROI, earning the same as what they were earning with a $20 abi 10yrs. ago).
I hope it grows but the small bit of info. in the article honestly just sounds like whimsical speculation imo. I truly hope I'm wrong as I'd like to play this game for the rest of my life.
Online games will just be harder and harder to win of course. It's not like chess or most games/sports where you only have to be a little better than your opponent. Because of the rake, you must be a LOT better (and on some sites, especially in low-stakes cash almost nobody can win a significant amount).
Since people like to gamble different kinds of Tournaments will probably remain even if they will be -EV for almost all that enter. It will be like other Casino games and lotteries. People are in it for the hope of being lucky - and because they think it's fun and exciting.
Therefore I think poker (at least online) in the future will become more of a social/entertainment industry.
Since CardsChat has many members and a decent amount of traffic I think the way forward can be to monetize the data in some way (maybe cooperate with survey/poll companies besides being an affiliate). And award people who give their opinions with freerolls/chips/tickets/sweepstakes.
Finally, since I took up AI: the growth in that sector has been exponential so it's hard to predict what will happen even in one year's time. Not only with poker but with the whole society. AGI can be the last invention humans ever make so it can be utopia, dystopia, or game over.
I think this man covers most future AI scenarios pretty well:
