It can be, if you play freerolls and you don't deposit big sums of money. You make money on freerolls and then you play with that money. It works for me and I have profit from poker.
For some poker is profitable, for someone - no.
It all depends on the skills of the game and delivered the final goal.
Mate if you good at it then hell yeah..
You can have fun or be entertained by playing 3 4 crowded cheap tournaments or satellites at a time and maybe you get lucky and get hugh prize. Think about it
I believe that poker is also profitable if you play live poker, and playing online is not always lucky yes and in most online poker sites operate on the principle casinoProfitable if you approach the game intelligently and competently read articles and books to have nerves of steel)
I wouldn't do that before you have the necessary expierence/skills... Cuz if you're still mostly a beginner in the game, you're not going to last in a big live MTT event like WSOP or EPT (or only with a lot of luck). So better to invest a lot of time and energy first in studying the game, playing freerolls for example, then to jump right into it...
I personally lost a lot of money already by playing cash games right away and not really knowing what you are doing (I knew I had talent for this game and was succesful with playmoney but still...). First time I started playing heads up with about 50$ buy-in, which was pretty stupid. I was told I played good but until the point you play really well, you will have lost a lot of money in most cases... Better to read books first and start playing at the micro stakes for a while. I do believe if you are a good player, you can even be a pro just playing cash games at micro stakes... Because winrate will be higher there (if you are good enough) and you can really make a nice profit playing several hours a day (and multiple tables).
Wether you want to have poker as a hobby or to make it your "job", depends entirely on YOU. Ok do need some intelligence or "skills" but a poker pro recently told me about the myth of "poker talent", which he says does not exist... You just have to study the game hard and improve your game all the time until you master things, and I believe him. Hard work pays off. Only 1 way to succes, never give up!
