Play hand for hand. Dont let last hand emotions in your next. Playing online you dont need to have poker face, try to play every hand as your 1st.

If the motivation is negative - the game is a stressful and only short bursts of positive emotions from scoring, and strong negative emotions when losing.
Here are some examples of negative motivation:
- Concern about money (unpaid bills, worry about the future)
- The desire to get even (in this case the game motivates pity money lost)
- Greed - the desire simply to win as much as possible
Avoid it and you will succeed!

Before Black Friday, the level/gap of a fish and a shark is so wide.

Today, all are sharks.

With regards to emotions, you have to play (see those bad beats and suck outs) many games to train yourself to control your emotions. As they say, "experience is the best teacher".

you might be a good player but also depend on where your playing at, if you playing at a low odds table where someone dont mind calling your gonna get alot of hands you should win and your not. you have to no the table and how people are playing some peoople who have unlimited funds to spend are more likely to call you with garbage so you have to find a common ground table eliminate some of the bs, but online just no its always going to be there

I use to have bad emotions to playong poker. Step back, look at your game. It took me awhile to het it under control. But bad plays and playing poorly will make emotional. Way i do it now, I try playing the most solid poker I can. Then after it is over i analyze my plays in my head. I determine, did I play my best? Was it bad luck or bad plays? E.g. just played a live tourney at casino. Got out before somrwhere during last two tables. Has $1200. Blinds $200/400. UTG+1. Got dealt A2o. I go all in. Guy on button calls with J7s. Flop XX7. Turn 7. I feel i played the best i could all the way to that point and still feel i played that hand best I could with my chip stack. Didnt feel one emotion about it. Got up and started analyzing every hand I played to that point.

Hi Widowmaker024

I tried to PM you but apparently I haven't posted enough for the privilege (oh to get inside the minds of them that think these rules up lol)

Like you I have read more than 40 books on poker and been playing for 10+ years but I am still not a consistent winning player.

I know I need to discuss poker with others but the poker friends I do have are just not that interested!

And I would prefer to have a small circle of trusted people to chat with rather than always doing it on forum posts- which just opens you up to every tom dick and harriett with a personality disorder to try and put you down :)

How did you get on with trying to get others to talk to?

I would welcome any suggestions /help in this area

If you can PM then please feel free to do so :)

Best wishes

Mike Bennett UK:)

The most satisfying way to play poker is against other good players at higher stakes. This may mean taking a month off to save $$ or finding a backer, but I think playing microstakes is just a recipe to be very frustrated. Especially in tournaments, there are just too many land mines and then you get guys shoving every hand, 10 hands in a row. You call with QQ against their J2 and lose. Playing within a bankroll is great, but sometimes if your bankroll is too low not playing at all is the best answer

I feel as though i am a better poker player then my results are showing simply because i let emotion run my game sub consciously and i do not know how to remove this from my game, can anyone help?

Emotion will steer the ship when ones internal compass is skewed by either bad results or bad play from an opponent etc… Understanding why each of us reacts emotional is the understanding of how honest we are about ourselves. Stopping emotion is more than the act of saying how do I stop playing emotional? Hand analysis or a stranger observing our game, it is tough for one person to say this or that about how they would do something; this would be only helping on the surface.

Honesty will start to find the root of why the emotion is there in situations in the first place. Talking about poker with a trusted person that understands your game is a start because the person you trust might have went through similar situations when they were learning. These chats might reveal information about your game without concentrating on fixing a problem in the first place.

The same reason the brain sends a message to play emotional can be tricked into revealing leaks in anyone’s game. Honesty and the drive to improve will let the leaks present themselves. A trusted person can share information but a person has to be willing to admit when a leak is pointed out to them or when they discovered a would be leak on their own, to see this for what it is; this only comes from honesty about how skillful or unskillful our play has become.

A big improvement for this player, when I started to see the same leaks in my opponent’s play that were either pointed out by the person I trust or when I saw my own leaks for what they were as an example. This mental process of logic and honesty about me has let the emotion reveal itself in my opponent’s game instead of my game running on emotion. A person is only as strong as their weakest tool. Honesty lets a person fix their own leaks eventually.

maybe try playing more tables, then you will have less time to focus on a bad beat because you have to make decisions on other tables

poker is a game you must play without emotions. Whatever it is you feel, you must put it to the side. it could be revenge tilt, depression or possibly even be ptsd. Whatever it is, think hard on why you play, what is your motive for playng poker.. it can go real deep and go further than you think.

if there is one emotion, The only emotion you should be feeling is happiness, because you should only be happy to do what you love. just likework, people are more prone to work better in a work environment when they are happy and love what they do, its the exact same thing. Throughout time, youll eventually get over your emotion and become real good and staying stable and neutral. Poker is both winning and losing, you gotta learn to accept that idea.

The bad News:
Psychology is MORE than half the game. If you can not separate your emotions from your game you will never be a winning player.

The Good News:
You can improve your psychological profile by:
giving yourself permission to lose (even winners lose many hands)
accepting that your opponents are NOT going to go along with your plans
understanding that most players have no clue what good strategy looks like
leaving your ego at the door - everyone thinks they are good at poker ;)
focusing on making good decision

I think one of the basic things that we need to learn and master in poker is how to rule and control our emotions. I'm not saying I do master emotion-control already. I am a beginner as many of you guys but I know that I wont have a problem regarding that. Poker is a mental game to start with so you gotta get your head in the game almost always.

LMFAO at "curse out that fish". As much as how much it sucks when fish takes your money, you want that fish to make that horrible decision all day. I learned this the hard way but you NEVER EVER curse out the fish. I hate it when idiots curse out the fish in chatbox or in person. They're making fishes realize their mistakes. You don't EVER encourage or imply them to fix their game. Just say "nice hand" or "sick hand". Revealing your true, frustrated emotions is a sign of bad player because you hint good players that you're frustrated and tilted, hence letting them take advantage of you. As much as how hard it is to hide away your emotions, you shrug it off and just smile, aka facading that you're there to have fun and you're used to it, even though you don't really feel that way.

I'll tell you right now. Thanks to people like you who criticized others for making horrible decision and get lucky, I was able to learn and fix my leaks and my game. Back when I was a fish who overvalued low pocket pairs, people criticized me for calling with pocket 2s over Q9s. Looking back now, it was a bad call. But if these idiots never opened their mouth, I wouldn't have realized or talked about it, or even considered putting that hand up for hand analysis. I probably wouldn't even have joined this site in the first place because I would have ego stuck up in my ass thinking I'm good enough, which is what I did in the past, playing at $5/$10 and then later, as I was slowly getting crushed, I decided to relearn the game and start from microstakes(which I still am since I used to play microstakes $2-$5 sngs online before Black Friday, and I currently play $1/$2 cash games live and $0.25/$0.50 live home games through meetup site).

pokerformia share your thoughts! must never criticize pes game! and less when the pes wins. I see many players because they lose quejarce winning hands! and do not realize all the letters q may be winning even two. seven

On line poker is world away from live and most people will not get rich playing on line due to the variance of the options that can be for you or against you. I have come to the conclusion that online poker should be more or less for fun and nothing more. Yes it can make you a slave to the game and breaks are critical to playing online. Their are so many bad beats and other donkey systems online including collusion and other r factors that it makes it makes it very difficult to be a true online pro. I personally have taken many a break.

I try to only play when in the moods and free of personal distractions I also will not play if i am not up to it or am having down swings. I find the best time I do well is when i just let go and have fun. The online game can make you stressed and frustrated and I choose the easier path. The only winners on online are really the owners of the site. I will never ever invest another dime I have plenty of points for tourneys and will play free rolls and If I win grt.

Here is an IE: I was in the 10k yest I had qq vs 99 yup trips hit for the 99
I had AK Diamonds vs qq yup trips hit for the queens. This seems to happen very regular especially were you can have a KK and an ace will river you I also had AA yesterday and got beat by trip kk. I love the game but do it more for fun my live play is were I bank

Play hand for hand. Dont let last hand emotions in your next. Playing online you dont need to have poker face, try to play every hand as your 1st.

Really good advices.

Use last hand to do statistics, to know your opponent, to tell a history, but never to bring past emotions to future moves.

The most important part of the game is emotional control. You can only control how you play. If you get your money in good the outcome of the hand shouldn't matter. If you get your money in good more often than not over time you will be successful. Good luck.

Well said.

P.S. How can you play at pokerstars from the US?

Substitution with playing more games isnt going to help him gain control of a vital part of the game and gain control. Hes has to learn to handle tilt and the problems that come with it. the emotion part will straighten out with more understanding of things that matter to you specifically, Like the money , a player playing 78 suited to your raise preflop and hittting a 7 with a low board. You now think your still ahead with AK and he bets and you go over him for all your chips and your behind now and dont hit .
Understanding things like this and why it happened will help you with tilt and emotion. Things like that is all it takes to throw a person off and even if you dont lose all your chips your still stewing over that 1 hand and you lose the rest of your chips. At this point you should be regrouping and planning on how to get your chips back.
Good Skill at the Tables
Nice to see flsnookem again ben a while :) leave a few chips for me :)
