That is definitely not true. Historically it was a man's game and it still has not come full circle though a long way for sure. Men played poker with their buddies growing up, in college etc - very few women were offered opportunities to play.

I may not have ever started playing online if it were not for my husband playing first.

Most of the new female poker players in the past 5-10 years are young - the generations before them had far less exposure to poker and it will be a long time before that is lost.

Nobodies denying women opportunities to play but if they were really as interested as men they'd create their own opportunities. There's no reason women couldn't get games going with their buddies (women don't call their friends buddies, do they?). Men make their own opportunities, they set up their own games, they seek them out, they drive 90 miles to casinos to play. They just seem more interested.

Of course this doesn't apply to all women. It doesn't even apply to my own wife and to be fair she does have a regular 1/month game with several of her "Buddies". And they seem to have a great time so I guess exposure is a part of the equation but I don't think it's the whole story. Without intending to sound Chauvinistic, in some ways women and men are just different and poker might be one ways in which those differences are manifested. It doesn't mean women can't be great poker players and it doesn't mean that exposure to the game won't increase their participation but as a whole women will never have the level of fascination toward the game that men do.

This should be it's own thread. I'm sure it already is.

Does anyone feel that the mathematical aspect of poker has anything to do with the scarcity of women playing the game? As an engineering major, I frequently am in classes of 30+ people, which often will have only 1-3 women or even none at all. The math in poker is trivial compared to engineering, but I was curious if this had anything to do with making the game less appealing to women, or if it was just the overall nature of the game.

I've peeked into classrooms on the "other" side of campus, the gender ratio is the other way around for classes like psychology and other soft sciences. Those classes will often be 75%+ women, and it's likely that the men are just there for general ed requirements and not majoring in the subject.

Merson had a pretty good day today. It would be interesting to see a big name poker player or celebrity make the final table.

A celeb would be great exposure. Some basketball player - The Truth, maybe? I don't know anything about the game- made it deep in the 10k PLO.

Interesting but I don't think the math aspect of poker has anything to do with it. Poker was always played by men and it never really started off being a math game until recently.

Yay!

I think another part of the equation and the reason why females may be seen as under-performing is that you have to remember that a lot of the higher profile women who play poker are coached/sponsored because of their looks or accomplishments in other fields. A lot of them seem to be ex-models and sports stars. This may skew the results.

Well our club's player will not cash again. He lost broadway to a rivered FH to cripple him when he was the table chip leader (AI on the flop) and then got his last 5200 AI preflop with KK vs AK and AK flopped broadway.

This thread became more of women vs men than wsop main event :\ So anyone knows if they are gonna livestream the event and where I can watch it (outside America, online if possible)!

There is no final table streaming of the main event. The weekly ESPN shows will air in the US and can usually be found on YouTube. The final table will be shown live online and on tv in some areas.

The final table will be shown on a 15 minute delay on ESPN.

You know what would be interesting, given the relative youth of the players that make the final table in recent years, is if Doyle Brunson was able to take the bracelet this year. Given the stamina that's required to even get there, I think that would be an even more tremendous accomplishment.
