I learned the difficult way. Skipping classes at high school at 2010 to play and lose my lunch money. Level there was crazy good.

I truly believe today that some of those guys at that age, could already crack NL50-100. One of them plays successfully short stack strategy live regularly at NL200 in a local poker club around my city (casinos are illegal). I'm from brazil, so it's a bit different model in college education, but most of these guys are either studying engineering, med school, so they didn't have time to dedicate themselves to poker.

I started to take poker more seriously last year, when I found at law school some home games where I could exploit a lot of loose passive donks loaded with money from law school. Since them I went back to poker books and stuff, trying to find a way of keeping up my partying and traveling routines as I pay college.

I'm surprised so many people taught themselves. Guess I was just lucky enough to have it run in the fmaily haha. I also read a lot of poker books when I got older and watched tons of poker events on T.V. I think there really isn't a better way to learn then to just play though obviously you don't want to lose any cash!

Great thread. It's interesting to see the mix of ways people get into and develop their poker. As for me, I am self taught, having played a variety of card games (though not poker) as a kid, didn't play again till in my mid 40's when I was prompted by someone else who was enjoying playing poker. So, I did. A bit of reading, signed up online to a site I cannot recall, and started reading and watching videos and tuitions online. Still development to be had but loving it all, and the addition of Cards Chat to my repertoire of aids is a boost!

Used to play blackjack and was always interested in Poker but was clueless. Over time started watching on TV, then picked up some books. :)

No1. I played a lot with a poker game and after defeating the comp, I decided to try to play poker in an online poker room (Everest Poker - those good days when it was filled with french players... ). I've learnt everything from playing the game. :)

I use to sit and play alot with my dad back when i was 16-17 before the U.S. started cracking down on the websites. It seemed alot more fun back then when there were alot of sites to choose from.

I was never taught me learned no one on line at first did not understand anything but slowly began to understand and instructing up to defend myself in a tournament , I still think that one never stops learning that every day you are going to improve and that also improves from the mistakes ... is not my case , I wish I could understand this item , this part and the hardest because lately I 'm losing by not believe I have to learn to stay with the doubt.

I learned odds and break even analysis from online poker forums and that was the key to winning for me. I played in a social type home game where no one folds and it was quite a difference to know how it should be played.

I actually still play with my Grandpa and Grandma till this day. Grandpa bluffs nonstop so you never know what he has and Grandma never raises so you never know what she has lol. Makes for a interesting 3 man game.

if it's cute when grandparents or parents teach us his ways and we spend their experiences, in your case poker, in my case with my grandmother played different card games. where she taught me, I have fond memories of it and the people who came to play with her as well as my mother .. it was not poker but it was very nice to play with it .. thanks for letting me share this memory. regards

i learned to play when i was about 13 to 14 playing 3 card brag in the kitchen with my brothers with the old pennys, 12 to a shilling . it was only about 8 years ago i started playing poker, freerolls at first to get the gist of playing. there was plenty off freeroll games then and plenty off forums, times have changed with only 2 or 3 forums worth playing in. if u want to learn i suggest get posting and playing CC forum freerolls.

My best friend introduced me to the play money, online game: governor of poker. Then moved onto Zynga poker on FB and then moved over to Pokerstars. I regret nothing:)
