I first started playing poker on playstation, the game I would play was Texas holdem hired from a video rental store. After maybe a couple of years I had internet connected and a friend arrived at my place while I had the game playing. He mentioned playing poker online at a site he named pokerstars, so I opened the site and downloaded and started to play(playmoney) games. Whoohoo!

This was great, I no longer had to rent the poker game disk from the video shop and I was now playing real poker players from around the world, this was just what I had been wanting for ever and now I had it, live poker games. But wait there's more!

My friend came around again and had a few games of the playmoney and really started to build a nice stack of chips on my pokerstars account, After a few months of gaming my account was over 1,000000, I was thinking this was awesome and appreciated his input yet it was still only playmoney. But wait there's more!

It can be used for practice poker, if you find players that take play money games as serious as real money games. I think that will be the biggest problem.
Best if you can find some friends (6 for 6 max) that play also there and are willing to train seriously in play money games.
Or perhaps some CardsChat Members that will train with you there.
Oh yes, I used it for practice, but really I knew nothing more than poker being just a fun game, as I had never played for coin, only for entertainment. And I agree, playmoney games are played nothing like real money games which are so much more fun. Thanks to sites like Cardschat giving out freeroll games where coin may be won, I now have a stack of real money that is slowly growing little by little, with ups and downs. I play at least $5 of $1 games with 9-45 players every day and still have never payed any coin into my account. Gotta love freerolls, Thanks cardschat!

One day my friend came around and I asked him if he wanted a game of poker, he asked me if I had found the freerolls yet. Of course I didn't know what he was talking about so he let me know that somehow I could find games for real money for free entry. being unfamiliar with the site still I searched around and eventually came across FREEROLL TOURNEMENTS on the Pokerstars site and played my first real money tourney for free. It was fantastic, I lost bad but I had it a new buzz, the chance not just to win games, but to win and earn for free. But wait there's more!

You are not the 1st or last to take this type of route to online poker. I did the same thing in my own way. Playing the free games has their use and I don't blame you for using them. Do play the free rolls to build up a small bankroll is also a great idea.

I would suggest once you get your bank roll up to say $100.00 i would suggest playing some of the buy in games. While the play money games do have some value, you will find many players don't play as they should and will give you more chips than deserved. You will find the games harder playing say $0.50 or $1.00 games but you will find players more likly to play real poker there as well. You will still find players giving away chips but its more fun once you start playing this level.

I started playing play money games, and I think it was useful> it's good to learn the relative value of the hands, to calculate the odds faster and starting to identify different kinds of players. Of course it's not the same as playing dor real money, some people play it like roulette all the time. But you can find these players in freerolls and micro stakes too. It worth it to me.

I have played many play money games at Pokerstars in hopes they would one day return to all U.S. states!

with play money, people will hardly play the same way as if it were real money, because they have nothing to lose. Likewise are freeroll tournaments, as there is no fear of losing, which makes players brave.

I also started as your friend.
you can acumulated a bankroll, but at a certain time, you will hace to make a deposit, to be able to withdraw the funds.
But that is the good start.
Cheers:):):)

I began playing free games at Global Poker in order to improve my play at the live tourneys I played in every Sunday morning. They helped a lot with practicing new methods of play. I could play a years worth of live tourneys in a week online. I don't see much difference between it and a lot of games I see online. It worked for me. :)

Playing with play money is the same thing as eating chayote, it doesn't taste like anything.😝😁🤣🤣

If you are starting from scratch it could help you to learn the rules and a few things more, but I think it would not be a recommendation to draw conclusions from your game, I think you should play with real money after a study and solid strategy.

Yes, playmoney games can be helpful for learning the basics, but that's about it (excluding when you just want to kil some time and have fun). In my opinion playmoney games often don't accurately reflect the dynamics and psychology of real-money poker. Players tend to play differently when there's no real financial consequence involved. That's why I think playmoney can be somewhat helpful in the beginning but it's crucial to eventually transition to real-money games to gain a more real poker experience and maybe make some profit even. Also, real money poker is usually more exciting as there are money on the line so the adrenaline is definitely higher.

I play at least $5 worth of $1 games with 9-45 players everyday, and still have never payed any coin into my account. Yes they are a much different game than most freerolls. I play the early morning(for NZ) freeroll tourney with 1000 chips of which I often get to within 10% of the starting group, but just a few days ago I got through the 1st 4 games and pulled in $200 into my stack. Perseverance pays.

Bonus about playing these games and having some wins is that your game improves faster and in a deeper form knowing that a lot of people who play for money games are also playing as if it is only an entertaining game often shoving with nothing. The more games played the more natural winning becomes the normal.
I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all..

Agreed, it seems a waste of time playing play money games yet there are others there who have a lot of handy information and seem easier to chat with due to the point it is only play money. So though being only a social game platform, there is plenty of reason to play.

I do have a few different online poker schooling courses on the go, but when I got to the "aggression" day I find myself not moving on with the remainder of the course, having to much fun playing with the stack of coin I have freely attained.

In fact, you should build real opponents, this will only find real money, difficulty reading opponents and building your bankroll.

I agree whole heartedly with what you say, I started a few years ago and decided to never put real cash into any poker room online, but learn with poker as just a game myself, until I found FREEROLLs. Let the game begin!

True, I never knew that I had to make a deposit of $100 to be able to withdraw any winnings! Well that is still ok for me as I have already agreed with my friend to leave the stack in PS until it is in credit for over $1k. By then I am hopeful to be good enough to get some backing from friend and family $$$ instead of my own. Thanks for the ups!

I believe you are correct there, yet my reason for play money was (beside having no coin to deposit) because that was all I had an interest in back then as I really enjoy playing poker. But then I found freerolls and wow, game on!

Nice story and I agree that freerolls are so much more fun than play money. When I discovered poker, I also started playing play money on these free games sites. After a couple of days, I discovered the free sitgos tables on Everest Poker (they don't exist anymore) and then the freerolls tournaments,

I used to play a WPT game on XBOX. It was from '06, I think? Anyway, I did it to get familiar w/the blinds and the different board structures. It was interesting to see what was programmed as a premium hand in certain situations. It had the hi-profile regs like Esfandiari, Mizrachi, Laak, and a few others. The W.S.O.P. had one as well, but it had way more "poker pros" on it. It was a fun novelty.
I play at a few "play money" sites for passing the time while I'm waiting for my wife while she's shopping, etc. Replay, PS's, and Global to name a few.

Playmoney poker games can be useful for practicing certain aspects of poker, but they have limitations when it comes to fully simulating the experience of real-money games. Here are some considerations regarding the use of playmoney games for practice:

Pros of Playmoney Games for Practice:

  1. Familiarizing with Game Rules: Playmoney games are a good starting point for beginners to understand the basic rules and hand rankings of poker without risking real money.
  2. Learning Mechanics and Interface: Playing with playmoney allows you to become comfortable with the mechanics of online poker platforms, including the software, user interface, and various features.
  3. Practicing Poker Math: Playmoney games can help you practice calculations such as pot odds, implied odds, and expected value (EV) without the pressure of real money on the line.
  4. Experimenting with Strategies: Playmoney games provide an environment for experimenting with different strategies, such as aggressive or tight play, and observing the outcomes without financial risk.
Cons of Playmoney Games for Practice:

  1. Lack of Real Money Dynamics: Playmoney games often lack the same level of competitiveness, decision-making, and emotional investment found in real-money games. Players may exhibit different behaviors and make less strategic decisions since there are no real consequences.
  2. Limited Skill Development: Playmoney games tend to have looser and less disciplined play compared to real-money games. Strategies that work in playmoney games may not be as effective in higher-stakes, more competitive environments.
  3. Ignoring Bankroll Management: Since there is no real money at stake, players may be less concerned about managing their bankroll, which is an essential skill in real-money poker.
  4. Incomplete Psychological Experience: Real-money games involve dealing with the emotions, pressures, and psychological aspects of winning or losing money. Playmoney games cannot replicate this aspect, which is an important part of the overall poker experience.
To maximize the benefits of playmoney games for practice, it can be helpful to treat them as a stepping stone to real-money games. Once you feel comfortable with the basics and mechanics, consider transitioning to low-stakes real-money games where the dynamics and decision-making are more authentic. Real-money games provide a more accurate representation of the challenges and rewards of poker, allowing you to develop skills that are directly applicable in competitive settings.
