Wait! You guys play to win????? what a crazy idea! lol
everybody plays poker to win obviously.

What you mean is, are you willing to make tough decisions? If that is the question then it makes more sense.

Of course I play to win, otherwise there would be no sense in playing the game at all, but saying that I can play for the excitement and fun the game gives me, because I am in control of what I am willing to lose.
bankroll Management is the most important part about playing sensibly and responsibly, I don't let the losses bother me, because I can afford the games I buy-into and I am not going to re-mortgage my house to try and win big money, I leave that for the dreamers.
Poker for me is a Hobby, Profitable yes! But I don't get stupid with my money, and even if I won Thousand's or even Million's playing Poker I would still stick to the 200 BB rule.
So if someone made me the offer of playing for my entire Bankroll on one single game, I would show them the door. I can sometime's make dumb mistakes when I play Poker, I can also win the occasional Free-roll MTT game, but winning a free-roll does not mean I can win a $1K buy-in, if you think that way you are only kidding yourself.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

As far as you are playing to just time pass than its ok but if you are serious about poker than everybody wants to be a winning player and try to have fun at the table as it make poker interesting as well as easy to learn thing but in my case it's quite frustrating as I somehow look into my win rate which is minus but I still try to learn from the mistakes I made but yeah I too want to improve and be winning player one day for sure as I put my whole in it.

You were probably thinking of a multitable game on a large number of tables supported by some software. I don’t practice that and I have no intention of playing such poker because a hobby that becomes a job loses its charm. Although every win at poker brings pleasure, and so does the one made that way ...

My objective is always only - win.
But who gets in the way to have fun and win? You can do both things at the same time =)

I think we hgave an entire couple of pages of folks who really are not being honest.
Many of you seem to be mixing up the idea of HOPING TO WIN with the iea of PLAYING TO WIN. They are not at all the same thing.

PLAYING TO WIN first of all, means going for the top spot. It does NOT mean cashing. Most of the folks here don't even make it to the cash, let alone the top spot.

PLAYING TO WIN means always knowing who the weakling(s) on your table is(are) and exploiting them relentlessly.

PLAYING TO WIN means spending time away from the table as well as hours of practise.

PLAYING TO WIN means reviewing your hands after playing to identify leaks and ID where you could have won more. You should also be refining your player notes after each game (and throughout)....so that you have more fact-based intel on your opponents. With CC folks, this should be extensive.

PLAYING TO WIN means getting your moeny in good when you have the leading hand. It does NOT mean flat calling to the river and then folding your missed straight/flush...

PLAYING TO WIN means not getting upset when you see you *would have won the hand* if only you hadn't folded your garbage hole cards. (Do not be results oriented, you'll be making the wrong plays).

There are lots more qualities of players who truly play to win. PLease resond with ones that I've missed or overlooked...and let's stop pretending that HOPING TO WIN is the same as PLAYING TO WIN.... IT ISN'T!

Cheers,

It takes all kinds...and this is my favourite kind. I LOOOOVE players who have no intention of directed learning.

But I wonder why you are here then. This site is about learning and getting better. I think you may only be here for freeroll passwords. THat's great if you're playing elsewhere too.

The idea that it loses its charm because it takes work is absurd. Money won is far more sweet than money earned...but to win it REGULARLY , you still have to earn it through hard graft. I don't hink I've ever won a tourney and said to myself "that win was not worth the effort". The hard work means that you will win more often. How can that be charmless?

To each his own. But I love the players who are not there to get better, but just to enjoy themselves. A perfect evening. What days do you play and where?

Cheers,
ObbleeXY

How playing for win isn’t fun? We all crawling for winning in every situation in life, in any competition. I don’t understand your question, I think nobody does.

Opinion

I think many players do not even always understand that they are not playing for the sake of money, but for the sake of the game itself and for the sake of all kinds of emotions that the game itself evokes.

The point of the game is to play to win. True, in MTTs sometimes you just focus on the laddering and are not playing to win but rather to get that next pay out when you are in a big tourney and money is good.

But that should not be your modus operandi if you are aiming to be the best poker player you could be.

Yes

No question. I used to play pro golf. I eventually learned that game theory says that you should 'go for it' more often than feels comfortable---in theory you make more when you pull the shot off than you lose when you don't. But human nature kind of felt like the lost money stung more than the gained money felt good!

In any tournament, winning is important, especially in a poker tournament for money. If there is no competition then what is the use of the tournament.

No, don't think that matters. You have a goal and you want to achieve it. The path to accomplish this can be the most fun. Sure you will get upset about bad beats, but that's just part of it. Sometimes the bad beats are so absurd that you can laugh maliciously at them. I once had AA and my opponent had AQ. We were both all in pre-flop. The flop came without a queen. He only had a equity of 0.1% at this time. The turn brought a queen and the river brought a second queen. I was eliminated from the tournament. I could only laugh about it.
