I think we have to differentiate...
between playing drunk and having a few drinks while you play...
Of course, also we have to take into consideration each individual and the types of games we are playing...
If I was playing for serious money relative to my bankroll, and in tournaments that could go on for many, many hours, I would be very concerned about drinking and playing.
As a recreational player and typically only playing in the evenings after work, and on weekends, I enjoy having a few drinks and playing poker. I rarely find that I make bad decisions due to drinking. Sure, I do make a few bad decisions here and there, but who doesn't? It never leads to playing bigger games than I typically play, and rarely leads to what I would consider, really bad decisions.
Funny Related Story: I rarely play live poker (maybe once a year on average), but the first time I played a Live poker game at a local casino, about 10 years ago, my gal, myself, her sister and her hubby all played in a $70 Buy-in tourney... I think we had 120-130 people in the tourney... I had to rush to barely make it for game time after work. Well, I was enjoying the game and having a "few beers"... but the game lasted for 6 plus hours as I made the Final Table and then some...
I have to admit, at that point I had passed over the "Sweet Spot" and was starting to have some difficulty playing my best game... thankfully, during a break We Negotiated a Chop at the Urinals and I made off with $1,500.
