I see nothing wrong with a "Nice hand" or "Good bet" or whatever after being beaten. To me, there's nothing worse than when a player takes a beat and then critiques the other player on how they played the hand. No matter how sick the beat, I don't think there is anything wrong with saying something positive to the guy who just won whether he outplayed you or got lucky. Better than being a loser and belittling someone at the poker table, creating a horrible environment for all at the table.

It is only a polite way to thank the compliment.

nice hand

Kindness is always welcome , saying it was a good hand is better than distribute aggressive words. we have to learn that we are opponents in poker and not enemies in life

The reason people say thanks after someone says good hand is because it's more polite than saying nothing or telling them how badly they played their hand

So many poker player say "Good Hand" after they are getting beaten and the response to it is always "Thanks". Why do they say thanks? Its not like they have done something to get this good hand... Can someone explain please?

Poker isn't just about cards and odds; it's also about good PR. If someone goes out of their way to say something, it's polite to at least reply. What else are you going to say back at them?

"Of course it was"

"It was foolish of you to call that (J-6-o) when there was an ace and jack on the board"

"Everyone knows (A,A) is a good hand"

Might as well say "I'm a raging asshole" and be done with it. Not replying is almost as bad as saying something like the above. Happy players will keep on giving you their chips happily. They won't so that if you make them unhappy.

Besides, it's just plain good manners.

As I may have mentioned before, I began playing online on a membership site. It was considered to be a community for learning poker players, much like this. For the most part it was a pretty friendly, polite atmosphere to play poker in. But I learned early on, when I jumped out of my seat at the end of hand to run downstairs and check on my sleeping grandson, that one of the rudest things you could do is not acknowledge another player's "nice hand".

There were apologies all around once I explained that I was away from my computer momentarily. That is, I apologized to the girl who had offered the "nice hand". All the others who decided to weigh in subject could kiss my ass. Besides the fact that it wasn't any their business, I really hadn't been away from the table long enough for there to be so much hubbub. In fact if hadn't been for half the players at the table and a few observers commenting, I might have come back and seen the "nice hand" in the chat box and given a reply.

At any rate, since then I always respond to "nice hand" with my standard reply of "preciate it". Sometimes I think the "nice hand" might have been meant sarcastically. It doesn't matter though, since half the time it's coming from players that are so bad, I wonder if they would recognize what a good hand is.

Honestly I probably miss alot of "nice hands" its not intended to be rude or anything i just keep my "chat box" on the stats tab and hardly ever have it on chat except on a final table but at that point i will say thanks or Nh to someone.

I always thank because sometimes the " nh " means the aneira I played the hand and not the letters in my hand.

It is just part of social behaviour (spelt properly) or behavior (as the spellchecker would prefer it).
For some reason american dictionaries are averse to the letter U in many words.
Of course it only really matters in a school spelling test, which would depend on the location of the school, (but which variant would be marked wrong in a test for english as a second language)?

Social convention dictates what people expect.

Does anyone really mean it when they say Good Luck to their opponents before a tournament?
And before some come back and say they really do mean it, they should consider the full implications of whether they really wish for the others to do better than themselves; at which point you have to question their reason for participating.

What do you answer when someone says Hello, How are you?
Do you regale them with a list of ailments or simply reply Fine and how are you? expecting a similarly conventional reply.
How surprised would you be if they paused to think about it and then provided an accurate answer?

So nice hand / thanks or nh/ty is just a meaningless exchange to satisfy social conventions.

Totally off topic, but in Belgium (or at least where I went to school) we learn British English, but on exams we are allowed both. We have to be consistent though, so once we use colour for instance, we cannot use behavior anymore and vice versa.

As for me, I only say nice hand when they really are. Otherwise I send the LH or Lucky Hand, since it was the worst hand and by luck or "variance" they got the game.
If they congratulate me, then of course I say thanks, is just the protocol, or good manners. :deal:
