I learned to play on a Play Money App and had a blast becoming a Play Money millionaire over a period of about 1 year. Once I decided I'd got all I could out of the just-for-fun app I took a shot on PS for cash ... grinding for play money is just madness.
I wouldn't go back to playing for play money because I don't think it can develop your game beyond a very basic level. But for newbies it's a great way to dip your toe in the water.

I first played with Play Money when joined Stars back in 2011. I found it a bit tedious then. I then lost lots of money!!!! But, it was certainly more interesting. I will now hopefully turn that round and get to a place where I at least don't need to deposit, even better start withdrawing.

When I was playing poker outside pokerstars (1 year ago), poker wasnt my preferred game, I was playing other card games and chess, checkers, dominoes, and other. Now, with the possibility of earn some money, I play only poker.

So, if it doesn't envolve money, probably we play a little less.

Waste of time playing for no money/play chips when there is ALWAYS a cash prize freeroll going somewhere.

I've even though about making a website that updates showing all the freerolls for different sites, so you don't have to open up each client one by one to check.

If anyone knows of such a beast PM me please.

I used to play for play money a lot because I was not really a big poker player at the time and I learned a lot from play money. If there was no money i might still do the play money thing but I would probably put time into other things as well. The money aspect adds a bit of incentive and excitement to the game and I am still getting used to it and building my bankroll.

With family and friends I would play without money being involved, but not online or with strangers. The only reason I do play with play money, is to get better at the game, but only to use these skills and knowledge in my advantage in the real money games. At the higher play money buy in games, it becomes more interesting to play and less bingo.
Without money involved, however, it usually becomes a donkfest, so much less fun and real poker play.

I do online because there is nothing else for me. For those that say no it's like saying "to high school and college ball team don't count" isn't pre pro sports good practice for when they go for the money. I have played in real money online and it be a donk fest too. bad play is everywhere.

i started playing for points(virtual money) in the begining when i was 14 but my game was 5 card draw if the online poker scene wouldn't become for real money i think i would still play 5 card draw and not get into holdem , omaha (i still play 5 card draw from time to time on ps and got lucky and won a tourney there, but the game is a lot different from what i'm used to )

My answer is NO I would not play poker if there was no prize for winning. I will say I do play with family and friends occasionally without money but there is a prize involved BRAGGING RIGHTS :) I play fantasy sports online for money and I would draw the same comparison to that as poker. When I played in a league for no money people would drop out quickly and only the players doing well would continue on. Now I only play in money leagues.

Poker for no money is a completely different game with players going all-in much more often than real money games. I guess they can reload there "free" chips easily so why not?

I dont think that "Money" is necessarily required. There does however need to be some form of value in your chips. Such examples are: playing for bragging rights, to learn/study poker, for an award/trophy, maybe a prize...

Poker is a skill game that revolves around placing wagers and bets. Without betting, poker is simply a game of luck. If the chips have no real value, the game changes entirely because the bets and wagers do not really mean much. This can be seen in low stake tournaments and freerolls. Players just punt-off with any hand and skill just goes out the window.

It's all about the $ When I was a kid I played all games but got bored with them all. I've been playing poker for 30 years. Nothing like the rush of a big win :)

I play poker because I enjoy card games and I like winning money. One of the few card games where I can get both :)
