I put in a small amount maybe 4-7 times a year, not much, and play relative often... play everything from freerolls to big tournaments. Oh, and it's a hobby for me

It's not about money.
When you think about how much money in the poker, I guess you are play bad.
the poker is cool for him self and we have to play well not depends on money.
the money is ALWAYS the consequence. in poker, in business, in live and all the things.
first thinks in poker, after thinks in money.

Getting better at anything is all about practice. If you want it bad enough and are willing to put in the time and energy, you will get better.

Something is not for you when you don’t enjoy doing it any more. Other than that, good luck on your journey.

If poker is for you is not a question of winning or losing in the first place...

If you like the game then why not spend a reasonable amount of money on a hobby you like...

Would you ask a movie addict how much money he has to spend at the cinema before he finally figures out that movies are not for him?

Being a winning player is probably even more fun, but if all losing players would quit fast then the poker scene would be very small...

Hah this is negative side of this question.

Positive ask will be:
How much money you need to lose,to learn to play poker?

Excellent your answer, I think it is to see the glass half full, think positive, and study so that that money # lost # becomes an investment to earn money ..

Treat the loss of money as a tuition fee.

Ultimately it is a game !! If you can't handle being sucked out with AA against 62o then please don't expect to be a winning, final table player let alone a profitable professional..

I don't think you need to waste money to get an answer.

The ideal is to always start with fictitious money and freeroll games.

Being profitable in these games, you will be able to think about playing the cheapest games, and thus scaling the games according to the evolution of your skill.

I believe that there is no need to lose money, it is better to play free tournaments and find the answer there.

Freerolls do not teach you the details of poker, if anything it is anti-poker until later in the tournaments when people play a little more realistic.

The rake is so high, that you should expect to lose money for the remainder of your life. Only 10% of players have withdrawn a SINGLE time I have read. So that would indicate probably a very small % of people, actively profit from Poker.

However, I do it. But, it takes a lot of discipline, practice, intuition, and study. I also don't make that much money, so I would say, if your not having fun, don't play Poker. It's a waste of time if you're not enjoying the experience.

Wow! For life? I have played for quite some time. If you wish to play for money, start in the 1 cent/ 2 cent micros. Play late position only, so you can see what others are betting before you do and play the top. 20% of hands at a 6max and 15% 9max. Check some YouTube "blackrain 79" videos on playing the micros. Good luck. I think this will help you.

I lost 1-1.5k USD before i get patient and started playing with bankroll management.
For exemple. When i had 100USD, used to play 1USD games, but when i down to 90-85USD because of the varience i played the 5USD to get my money back, but it's not how it works. Be patient, play AT LEAST 70-100 buy ins and study :D
If you have 20USD, play the 0.25 sit and go's, keep playing freerolls. Good luck

You can’t really say, because you either can play, or you can’t, so it’s not about the money, it’s in your skills, and abilities.

I misread this post because I was stoned, yea that's fine, I was reading it as only play hands from early position. My bad.

I think that everyone knows what they do and what they get into when they decide to invest in poker ... there are people who play as a hobby just for the pleasure and fun that poker can provide, but if you are only interested in it money then think well before investing, so that later you do not regret having wasted time and money on something that was not for you

Do the 10% Rule - If you lose for than 10% of your take home wage in your pay cycle then its not for you. Example you make $1500 take home pay every 2 weeks and lose more than $150 in a 2 week period then its not for you. This would be the Max.
