How others (parents, wife, friend) refer to the fact that you play poker?

My wife likes to play poker sometimes. She is a pretty good player.

Nobody cares about it because that is my hobby

My parents do not play poker and do not like gambling but they see that i play as a hobby and do not risk my money for living so they respect it and do not complain. Some of my friends play poker and i play with them. Other friends just do not care. Frankly i am yet to see anybody who do not like me to play poker and directly tells this.

Haha Nearly every one says "YOOOOU?!?!?! You a POKER player?!?!?" So I ask my self what is it they imagine a poker player to look like or be like...

Then it hits me... They expect Hoodie, classy shades and a few gorgeous women in my entourage...Well

I have to correct them straight away "Nope that's my mother, my two children and their hip hop buddies from school", "I just Play Poker, NOT a Poker Pro Yet" and "No, I've not come here to borrow money" LOL like as if all Poker players are Hopeless Gambling Addicts lol

I've not needed to tell any one close like family and friends as its already an open book Every one who knows me knows i love playing poker as much as some others love Fishing or going to the gym!!!!!

Nobody knows xaxaxax... I'm kidding. My wife has nothing against. We'll see how he will react to online poker, since I'm just starting out lol

my children and my husband likes that I play and they rejoice in my victories,But since I'm still working that they are sometimes concerned about my health and asking me to play less is not Particularly advertise.

My family knows that playing poker and that I like it very much and have no problem with this, but my colleagues at work when they learned of this had some strange comments because of the fact that there is a lot of money and all kinds of money quotes of this kind. After I stood and explained that they lost much more money at their hobbies they gave me the right ... some even made poker accounts )

So I grew up playing cards at home.

And took to gambling early.

And than online happend and than casinos opened in my city.

I do not relate to many people and the few that I know do not understand poker so every day I interact with less people since none of them understand what passion for poker is

Technically your parents are not wrong. I think people just fail to realize the difference in gambling when the casino sets a line to give themselves a slight edge and making bets in poker where we can control our own edge. It is very rare that we make a bet with our opponents drawing dead so technically we are still gambling. If we are good players we are getting our money in with a significant edge is the difference that non poker players do not understand.

Yes I know this is gambling too, but, I think this "gambling" is different as to gambling in sports for example, in poker we have all the control of our own money, in sports we depend of the players, I think that yes it is gambling but if you know what you're doing this game can turn in a way to life, in a work, that's why poker pros live from this.

I agree. Although some people seem to somehow make a living betting on sports too. Finding bad lines or in-game mistakes and exploiting them. Poker is definitely very different though.

Like a red headed step child! Weird how the perception is toward poker. For my family, it is a seedy back alley, going get stabbed and cheated out of all my money. Yup, even in today's day and age.

A gambler

My first husband hated that I played. To be fair, in part I probably played online so much because it was a distraction from the problems we had. My second husband, whom I taught to play, now plays more poker than I do! We totally get the love of the game, and enjoy poker as a shared hobby.

My friends and relatives do not understand me when I tell them about poker, that they can earn money for life, they look at me like a fool. Therefore, I try to no longer tell anyone that I play poker.

None of my family cares if I play or not. But when I feel very good, while winning, they share this feeling with me.

Many of my friends say that play cards is a kind of crazy - they have no idea about a poker game, thinking we may lose everything we've got if we become adicted to it (the old foolish concept). Some says it's very complicated to understand it and some wants to learn etc.

But you know what?
I really don't care what they say; I just play my poker.

my family does not see it with pleasure, they are afraid that I will fall back into addiction to the game, but I explain that at this time I only do it recreationally.

Most people who don't know the skill behind poker think it's just gambling and that I'm wasting money. Most people are pretty impressed when I consistently win money and ask "how" and become curious. A few of them actually became pretty good poker players themselves!

The whole spectrum is from complete misunderstanding to the approval of "teach and I want".

Most of my friends play poker and we typically play together when we can so they are cool with the fact that I play. My family on the other hand are not so happy with the fact, they say it's too time consuming.

My parents are skeptical about my passion for poker,but do not interfere,but my wife even at one time even tried to conflict with me because of the games on PokerStars! The situation was simply unbearable,but I managed to defend my passion for poker, now it's a small matter, to prove that our love with poker is mutual!

Some don't like me to gamble, some think that it's pointless because I won't make any money out of it, but they don't know how liberating and relaxing it can be sometimes , but I don't need their approval, i play for me

as for my friends. when I talk to them about poker it's like I'm coming from the planet mars.my family do not like to see me play and always ask me to promise never to play my legacy at the game. for them it's a game money and nothing more. but that does not bother me. I know my limits and I will do my best to reach my goal of becoming a regular play day.

Everyone I tell finds it quite interesting and they are intrigued. A friend told me he had read that playing poker and being a stock broker take the same kind of mental aptitude. I thought that was kind of cool !

Like the majority of people and their psychological make up when you're winning and cashing there is no complaints when you're in a down swing they turn their backs

My mom is always supporting me even though when she doesn't like the idea but I understand how she feels is kinda weird that your son tells you that he wants to play poker and live from it haha my father is not very happy and I guess he think is a waste of time but I'm doing my best to get results and prove him wrong and demostrate that I can reach my goals.

Those who don't play poker mostly think that it's an addiction which costs money. I guess because 97% of people lose money and because of the stories for many others who have lost everything by gambling.

Well,I´ve never had any problem with my family due to poker.Thanks to poker I´ve a bought a tablet,clothes,sneakers,and I´ve given some money to my mom everytime I withdrew some cash.But friends and other people look at with surprise when I tell them that I play poker some hours per day..Idon´t care because I´m not doing anything wrong and this game is very exciting isn´t it?

The funniest are the ones who never played poker before and thy judge you. Some of the people think poker is just gambling without thinking and strategy. But most of my friends have no problem.

Some people judge me. Others support. Don't pay attention. Do as you see fit.

Here were I live poker has zero tradition, everybody considers it at best an expensive entertainment, but the majority - including my family - sees it as a pure gamble. I gave up trying to explain them:.(
