It depends on my mood. I find sometimes it relaxes me and helps me concentrate better. Like you said it can be a good distraction after a bad beat!!

I eventually hear documentaries on youtube as I play, lately I've seen things like quantum mechanics, new discoveries about outer space, natural medicine, and how things work.

Its really up to you. For me personally music is a distraction. For others it helps them concentrate. If you do choose to listen to music while playing, instrumental music is better as trying to understand lyrics make it harder to focus on a specific task.

Yes, I always listen to chill lounge mixes when grinding online. Helps with relaxation and gathering of thoughts under pressure.

Live, not as often. I like to hear and be aware of the situation around me at the table. And some action players will categorically refuse to give their action to a hooded and quiet guy with earbuds and phablet for simultaneous online grinding.
