This is a discussion on What do you think are the most important factors for poker success? within the online poker forums, in the Learning Poker section; What do you think are the most important factors for poker success?
I think the 2 most important factors are:
1. Table/Game selection
2. Reviewing your poker hands
That's another area my friend doesn't quite get. Now we usually don't have the luxury of picking a table in live play because we are either playing a tourney or there is just such a short selection of cash tables where we are at. Even with that, the first thing I do when sitting down is start figuring out who I want to be in hand with and who I don't. I will always ask my friend what his prehand read on player is and he never answers. I assume he doesn't know. If he doesn't know he's not paying attention and should not be playing. Some will say they will play anybody - that's fine, but you should know who the weakest and strongest opponents are (and everywhere in-between) at your table. If not, you are just playing your cards and not doing what you can to eliminate as much of the luck factor as you can.

Above all else, in my opinion is the willingness to learn. Seeing as poker isn't something you're going to be amazing at the first time you learn the rules, and it's an ever-evolving game, being able to recognize what's working and what's not.
But before that you must enjoy the game itself, and not take it too seriously.
