Yes, poker is gambling

Poker is gambling, no doubt about it. Chess is a game of skill, not poker.

The cash game is a game of chance, and tournament poker is a sporting event. In the tournament, participants have the opportunity to take prizes, including first place, second and third as it is in many other sports. There is no such possibility in cash games. Sport is inherently a tournament or a championship. In the cash games there is no competitive spirit.

Hmm if it would be possible to win without looking at your hand, and I think it is possible, it shouldn't really be considered gambling.

If it weren't gambling, wouldn't the same players be at the final table of the world series year after year? It's definitely gambling. Get your cards in with the best chance to win and still lose. Gambling

"clueless" ^^

(.. a player like this is probably also whining about online poker being rigged, LoL)

Simple post for a simple mind. Hurl an insult instead of participating instead of intelligent conversation. I will be the bigger person here:

Are you denying there is luck in poker? Play every hand perfectly and still lose every hand...it happens. Luck is involved majorly, the games are held in a casino for a reason. Because it is gambling. Have there been any repeat champions in the wsop in the past 10 years? No! One guy made the final table in back to back years. Does this mean that someone always emerges as the best player?? No it means that one guy ran better than the rest late in the tourney. Ask anyone, you have to RUN GOOD

There is a chance (for money) that you will win and there is a chance (for money) that you will lose. How is this not gambling?? I believe that is actually the Websters definition of gambling.

You can play a hand perfectly and still lose it.

Of course poker is gambling - any game that involves putting money in against other players is gambling. Now comes the $64,000 question, is it luck or skill? There is a degree of skill in calculating the correct odds for the hand you are playing, and there is some skill in bluffing. The other side of the coin is that the cards you are dealt are undeterminate and you have no control over them. The same can be said about the flop, turn and river. If you play in a game with blinds, you are forced to contribute regardless of what your two hole cards are.

Poker is gambling, poker is a skill game either. If you want to gamble playing poker , you can easily lose all your money, but if you want to play this game for making money, you will see results.

I guess whenever you're putting money on the table in cash or buying into a tournament it's technically gambling. However you have much more control of each hand than you would in other types of gambling games so it's different in that sense.

Poker is clearly gambling by any reasonable definition of the word. There is no winning strategy at poker that doesn't involve taking some short term risks, hoping that the cards fall in your favor. So in any finite amount of time, there's a possibility that you lose money without ever making a statistically wrong play.

Poker is only considered gambling if there is something wagered on the game IMHO. IF you are playing poker for fun with friends for nothing its just a game like like chess is for example, but once something is wagered involving poker then it turns into a form of gambling. Poker is about 50% skill and 50% luck IMHO. SO yes poker is a gambling game but if your playing poker for nothing its not gambling imho

Poker is gambling, that's why tournaments allow worse players to make more money from the same period of time due to luck at the ending.

If you are asking if poker is 'fair' or if skill can make you earn money then the answer is this:

If you want the form of poker where there's the most skill and least variance go to large-table cash games. Not small table cash games and not any size table tournaments. This allows you to fold all bad hands and not lose a lot via blinds.

Not sure how anyone can argue doing something without having a guarantee is not defined as a risk. Variation and random uncertainty is the base of the game, that's what makes it fun

Poker in general, is not gambling, because you have control over how you play, when you play in hands, and you can outsmart people. You can't outsmart lottery tickets, slot machines, and for the most part, table game dealers. So IMO it is not gambling.

Anything you take a risk on not getting a return is a gamble! Just some risks are higher than others
