I don't believe it's a sport. It's a game and that's all it will ever be. If people want to consider it a sport then make chess, gin, blackjack, bingo, etc. a sport. I mean nobody is gonna run up to the felt in-between blinds and hand you a Gatorade and a towel. Maybe if you're Ivey or Negreneau or Helmuth. Sorry, it's just not a sport. Have a nice day. :bootyshak

it's a gamble game.
Chess is sport
Actually I think sport implies some kind of physical activity. In my personal opinion darts is not a sport for example. I used to play chess at a pretty high level, but even then we were calling it "thinking sport" rather than just plain "sport".

Poker is a fun and at the same time hard game.

I am just a rookie at poker but if I had to train at this I would not play because I'm lazy.:D

Of course, it's competitive and it requires skill. There's also plenty of tournaments and ways of ranking players. We all know who the big players are and we all know what makes a good or bad poker player, so luck doesn't quite factor in so much as over time your luck should average out. Saying it requires some luck doesn't refute that it can be a sport.

At some point it will become a sport depends on the level of competitiveness I think but I do not think what a simple game of chance:eek:

I have a hard time trying to understand the concept behind these "mind sports". I understand that there is a lot of skill involved and you get prizes according to your performance, just like regular sports such as basketball or football. But the same is true for other competitions like MasterChef and The Voice. Are those sports as well? I think I tend to associate physical prowess with the concept of sport.

In any case, let's say poker becomes widely accepted as a sport. Even then I doubt it would ever be a part of the Olympics because it's definitely not consistent. In individual sports like Judo or Fencing you can see that the best athletes at the Olympics are basically the same from the last world championship. The best players will almost always perform very well and there is basically no way a low ranked player would come out of nowhere to get the Gold medal, which could very well happen in poker. A possibility would be to hold several tournaments with the players getting points according to their results on each of them. It would help but not solve the problem.

Also, people above noted that every sport takes luck and that's true, of course. But in poker you could very well see the fight for the Gold and Silver medals happening through a preflop all in flip like a pocket pair vs two overcards and you can't say any of them made a mistake by going all in with those hands. That's not really what the Olympics are all about.

You helped me change my mind.

Sent well in the words friend, said everything!

I do not consider poker as a sport, because sport is the interaction of the brain with the body, but one brain is only a game and a concentration. Maybe chess is so stressful that they are considered a sport, but poker is still more a game of luck

Poker is an interesting game in which there is sometimes a sports interest, but in most cases the interest is financial.

If we are talking about a cash game, then of course it is a gamble, if we are talking about tournament poker, it is naturally a sports game. There are many classifications in poker and you need to determine your place in it.
For example I'm more a tournament player, because I love the rivalry.
And so, of course I would like to participate in the Olympics.

Have you ever imagined poker in the Olympics? let me know your opinion .... poker is a sport or a simple game of chance?

Olympics?? No But I'd watch... Who you gonna get to play for just bragging rights? The winner prolly sell the medal for a buy in. haha ... Is poker a sport, IMO, NO.
Neither is chess and chess is not "a simple game of chance."
Poker has an element of chance sure.
I'll NEVER beat Bobby Fisher at chess, or James at basketball, but I might beat Ivey on a good day at the tables. If he was sick, and not allowed to look at his hole cards, or at me, haha.

Yes, Poker is a sports

Did you ever thought that you couldn't make a good result in a poker game, or tournament!!
Poker game, especially Texas Holdem, need a well mind-set and to be healthy.
This game took almost all the power of an expert player, so we can not say that it doesn't in sport category, but in other way, we should classified it in the most highest level of difficult sports.

I believe it is a mental sport and not a game of chance decisions are yours its quick thinking in makes the decision more accurate and that will define how the end of the hand will be played and of course there are bluffs as well. but I do not think he's going to be in an Olympics for example. but I do consider it a sport.

Poker is a mind sport.
In Brazil the games of chance are prohibited, making for many years the poker being practiced "on the edge of the law" here. But because of the commitment of the community, we managed to get the government to declare poker a "mental sport", thus legalizing practice in our country.
Just for the record, casinos are still banned here, making poker practiced solely in poker clubs or in home games (or online, of sure) .

Like bowling, if you can eat while playing it's not a sport..it's something else.
Consider "sport" hunting...then join the military and work a combat zone.

join the discussion, as for me, i think card games is not a sport but competitive discipline. Because of random its very interesting, but not a sport, chess is a sport, because it dont have a random in the basis and all depends on you.

In poker, everything also depends on you :)

Let everyone decide for himself. Who likes to consider poker a sport, let him think so. For me, it's just a game. And at the Olympics poker will not appear in the near future.
