Poker is a sport

Poker is a sport for the simple reason we are playing against other people and that means the best player is going to win so this is a sport of skill. There are differences between poker and other casinos game and the main difference is that in casinos, poker is the only game where you are playing against other people and not the house besides that there are tournaments where people competed each other for a trophy and most of the time a huge amount of money

Poker is a game, but it plays well on the TV sports channel.

I would not consider a sport, and that's perfectly fine, as not being a sport doesn't take anything away from the game

Not a sport. A game of skill and luck. If one was to consider poker a sport you would have to include such things as floor trading(which is jokingly called a blood sport) and other activites/hobbies that include any form of competition.

My opinion. Def. not a sport!

It would be awesome the day when they will accept poker as a sport , I am sure this day will come for real .

It 's not gambling , bingo or lucky cards . Instead Poker inspires competivity , is a real contest of skills , courage , patience , precise calculations , clever maneuvers , strategies , ingenius traps , hard decisions , a struggle for the gold/first position until the end , a systematic fight with yourself to get the best out of you and to beat stress/fear of losing , a discipline to stay calm/focus and not to reveal weaknesses-tells to the other players , critical mind games and moves which only the strong and skilled will overcome and be victorious on the long run , and generally it has so many other charachteristics that make poker a unique beautifull sport .

Some say the problem is the lack of body exercising---give me a break :) I don't think this is a problem . There are sports that don't include so many body parts movemnets/exercising/synchronization , such as 10m air pistol , some other shooting/archery games , etc . If equestrian dressage (poor horses-it always reminds me circus:eek:) or curling (extraordinary sport:rolleyes: , the sweepers with the brooms, wow , it still reminds me cleaning my house:p) or badminton:trytofly:==)):stupid: are sports , and also official Summer or Winter Olympic games , well forgive me if I consider also poker as a sport .

In the worst scenario , because I guess many don't like poker to be accepted as a sport ( or is it that they disapprove the idea to watch poker someday at the Olympic Games?? ) we can find a special variation of poker that satisfies both most poker players and athletic committees' standards . So many new variations appear every 2-3 months ;) , online poker Rooms (they are specialized in this  ) and poker pros should work together to find a variation of poker that could be accepted as a sport:)

Any rivalry can actually be called sport bro. Poker is a sport because you can compete in tournaments and get a specific place, better or worse than others players

Poker is a card game. It may even have some characteristics, such as competitiveness. But I think that poker is far from being a sport.

Poker is a sports game)) Because you need not only intelligence but also quite a decent physical endurance. Never imagined the poker in the Olympic games, but why do I think that it never will be.

SPORT - physical exercises for the development and strengthening of the body, as well as a system for organizing and conducting competitions in various fields of physical culture
Poker is not a sport. This is an intellectual game

It would be the most incredible thing in the world. In case all the mental effort required by Poker already makes it an extreme sport :)

it's a gamble game.
Chess is sport

I don't see any logic in that. Just because wagering is involved, it a game and not a sport? Why? Why would chess be a sport just because no wagering is involved?

A someone who was an actual athlete, I have to say neither are sports. Egaming is not a sport either. It is a game of strategy, but not a sport.

Sport - 1. an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Is that why fossilman won the main event, because of his great physical endurance? Give me a break. It takes none of that to sit in a chair. Only mental endurance is involved in poker.

For me, poker is my favorite hobby, but in general, I am more inclined to believe that poker is a sport.

poker is a great sport where skill and talent are involved and a small amount of luck. It does not compare and it is not like any casino gambling for example where the house is always winning. What differentiates poker and makes it a sport just as chess is the ability of the individual to make good or bad decisions according to his or her ability. 70 percent of the hands in texas holdem are decided without showdown, ie without showing the cards at the end, this indicates the ability involved in this great sport

Poker in Olimpiads

In my opinion poker is a sport so much that to get good results we need to have a healthy mind as well as good physical shape and be away from alcohol and drugs

Besides being something that brings people and brings good friendships have mental and financial results good when we play well

I think Poker very complete and can indeed being inserted into Olympics

I personally do not think so, but playing at a high level is very difficult. Therefore, in any case, the player must always be in good physical and psychological form.

join the discussion, as for me, i think card games is not a sport but competitive discipline. Because of random its very interesting, but not a sport, chess is a sport, because it dont have a random in the basis and all depends on you.

Spoken like someone who has not played 12+hrs a day first hand! You are in fact both mentally and physically exhausted after a day like that! And whether you like it or not, Poker is in fact classified as a Sport. The tournaments are considered Sporting Events, and is also even acknowledged as capable of being a Spectator Sport. It's along the same lines as ESports IMHO.

It's not classified as a sport though...

I've spent +16 hours a day doing mentally exerting work that was centred around the same task. It doesn't make what I'm doing a sport because at the end of it I'm mentally and physically drained. E-Sports aren't sports either, they're E-Sports for the very specific reason that they're not sports.

There's too much of a luck factor involved to consider it a sport.

IMO Poker is 100% a sport! the mental aspects of the game are HUGE not to mention the grueling hours involved in actually being able to turn a profit. The study thats involved is the same as practicing for any other major sport and MTT's are purely GRUELING. SO yes IMO it is absolutely a sport!
