Hello,
Of course buy in games are harder than freerolls!
In freerolls most players spew their chips, so it is easy to build up a stack and go deep in it.
Meanwhile, in buy in tournaments, more people are aware about their stacks and play good enough game, so the tournament is harder than the freeroll.

Your question is very important, it is an opportunity to raise an essential point that I would like to analyze concerning tournaments, whether freerolls or buy-in tournaments. These are small field and big field tournaments.

We speak of small field when it is a tournament with less than 200 players approximately, in this type of tournament it is easier to reach ITM than in tournaments with hundreds or thousands of players. On the other hand, in a big field tournament it becomes difficult especially in freerolls where generally there are several hundred players or even thousands + the increase in blind which is faster.

In answering your question, the problem is not the difference between freerolls and buy-in tournaments but the fields, the structure and the increase in blinds.

I disagree with almost everyone in this thread. Buy-in tournaments are much easier and more enjoyable to play. In the vast majority of freerolls, people just shove and mess around.

There is no need to even think about it, of course, tournaments with buy-in are more difficult to play because there is something to lose. MTT for money is a completely different style of play, a different philosophy of poker, and if we talk about expensive tournaments, then another poker.

Antonio Esfandiari said he would much rather play calmly professional players than cowboys. Just ask him about Gus Hanson.

Freerolls are filled with cowboys. And playing against them can produce bad habits when playing with more experienced players.
