It would be hard to imagine that Ivey would need to cheat. He has enough money and it's obvious he has skillls. Unless the hot asian chick made him do it.

Skills don't count for anything in a skill-free game though...

I really doubt that Ivey did anything wrong here. With that being said, I find it ironic that one of the higher ups for full tilt poker cannot get their money they won because of possible improper risk assessment of the casino.

In case anyone finds it interesting, this story came up when I was talking to some casino worker friends (Australian ones, no connection to the casino in this case) over the weekend.

They were of the opinion that the other likely explanation (aside from "he busted the casino") would be that floor manager or supervisor that approved the rise in stakes from 50K to 150K per hand overstepped their authority in doing so.

If the casino does take the latter stance, they're unlikely to get out of paying Ivey off due to the agency relationship under common and commercial law.

I wonder if he was "cheating" when he was down 500000 pounds.

Interesting that you think no skill was involved.

I think Ivy did use some skill maybe card counting or if the deck was shuffled every time he new generally what to expect because cards being shuffled is not truly random.

Or something, I find it interesting to try to think of how he did this he must have used some hidden talent or knowledge. Hard to believe he just got this lucky.

Way easier to believe he got lucky than that he figured out a way to beat the game.

Out of interest, have you actually played baccarat / punto banco? Are you familiar with how the game works?

Because it's not blackjack and when I say it's a skill-free game, that's not just an opinion that I'm pulling out of thin air: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punto_Banco#Punto_banco_odds_and_strategy

High rollers play it because of the low house edge - basically if they run good (like Ivey did) then they can win big.

I just watched that old movie "The Sting"... anythign and I mean anything is possible here. Lets just say Ivey got in with the wrong group of "F"amily...they rig a game and get a reputable mark to play their shill. Hes forced to do it - but they make out like bandits either way... U never knowww with that much $ on the table.

And maybe they had planned on paying him out that day because they figured they had him lined up to make a $20mil bet on a fictitious horse-race the following day but Ivey changed his plans, so they ripped him off by not paying out instead.

Only have played baccarat but I am no Phil Ivy.

Interesting wiki look at this

[A]dvantages in baccarat are very small, they are very rare and the few that occur are nearly always in the last five to 20 cards in the pack.
—(Thorp 1984), p. 38
Some advantages can occur and Ivy is the type of gambler that would use every advantage however small. I still don't think its that far fetched to think he was using some of his tallents in some way.

But that's just my opinion and even if I am not correct still would have loved to have been in his head during this winning streak.

was playing Punto Banco, which is a skill-free variant of baccarat

BUT it was Ivey so he must've figured out something:confused:
I heard Ivey doesn't even need to flush the toilet... he just scares the shit out of it!

Punto Banco is only skill free if you are not a psychic like Ivy is......

Unfortunately my telepathy only works on roulette.

Phill Ivey

Mr Ivey is one of my heros and so much fun to watch play,i could not dream of him cheating!! He would have way more to loose than his one million stake he could get a world wide band from poker like W.P.T i dont think its worth the risk to him!! Pay the man his money and be done with it.

I like how the name of the casino in "Crocks"ford I would expect to get ripped off from a place named that. Kinda sucks but still hard for me to feel sorry for him after the FTP debacle. +1 on the girl, the best part of this story is the hot asian chick.

The casino just lost to Phil. Seems like he was completely legit. Pay and suck it up. Casinos are quite rich anyway. Sometimes you lose.

well considering they gave him his personal stake back and are withholding the winnings, i would imagine they will pay him once the investigation is concluded

since this thread started a few months back, i wonder what the outcome of this was.I hope they payed him his money by now, seems highly unlikely he could have been cheating here in this game.Maybe someone will post an update soon, or i will google it also.
