Sooooo I've had this conversation with friends of mine in the past. I personally get the same happiness and rush of winning whether it's free or for thousands of dollars. I believe it's a mental thing. My drive to win is higher than the desire of money.
The OP is about the excitement. IMO If you can't enjoy poker at its core for free then it's going to be hard for you to be profitable and stick with it for the long term.
Personally, I will play my hardest and put as much thought into free poker, as I do when I'm playing in a 500K guaranteed tournament. I know because I have played both. The skill of the other players varie, but in poker you make reads, decisions, and adjust your range constantly changing for the situation. So this shouldn't affect your game.
IMHO when people get aggravated and say I'm not playing play money poker or free poker because it's not real poker! In my eyes that is a leak on their part for not being able to adapt to the situation.
The reasons why I choose to play for real money over play money is because I ultimately want to get to the point where I can self sustain and make a living on poker alone. It's a constant battle of studying and learning and moving up in stakes. If I didn't have that goal in mind I would just play poker for free and for the joy and excitement of playing the game and be happy with that.
I'm interested in what makes the game less exciting for you when there isn't a monetary prize earned?
not really, who has the time to play with play money, unless you don't have a job.Memphis Grind dropping truth bombs of gold.

In my experience I found joy just playing the game and not worrying about what I had to lose. I could play trash cards and it was ok. I developed my skill and realized I could actually make real money from playing freerolls.
I believe if one can't find joy in just playing the game, what's the point in playing? I've had lots of fun playing poker and this is after losing many games. I've also won many.
Play to have fun because when money is involved, people start going crazy and get aggressive. The joy and fun of the game seems lost. That being said, it doesn't stop me playing real money tables.
My suggestion is play with play money and find out if you really enjoy playing the game. Build up your game before trying real money tables.
Learn do play poker for the strategy and enjoyment of it. If you start playing poker without having an outcome mentality at the heart of your poker game...you'll go further.
The game isn't fun when you play without stakes because as a beginner you don't yet grasp the depth of the game. Understand the strategy and then playing the garbage freerolls on ACR can be fun whether or not they turn out to be 'profitable'.
Id reccomend playing a bunch of freerolls and let that be your training grounds for the first few months or so of playing.
This is like suggesting playing chess but all the men on the board are pawns and after every 5 moves you must start again at the beginning of the game (do you see what I'm saying here?).
Poker at playchip tables vs. real money tables is like playing 'go fish' vs. playing bridge & suggesting that playing 'go fish' should be just as fun for a professional bridge player (or for Doyle Brunson).. because it is 'cards'... so there should be no difference. If you don't like playing cards then it won't matter but if you like playing cards then you will like playing 'go fish' equally as much.
OP, playing playchips games is a complete waste of time. Choose what you're content with in investing in learning how to play the game & then make a deposit. When I first started out I began with a deposit and only wish I'd done it much sooner!
