Taking notes is a good idea. People have patterns that can be easily exploited.

Taking notes should be a fundamental tool in our game, using a HUD is not a valid excuse for not taking notes. In general I take notes when I play Cash Games, because in tournaments with large participations it is not as effective and I only take notes from regular players.

I play using HUD, in this way the notes I take from my rivals are postflop, because the HUD makes available to me preflop information, in this way I think that my notes are more efficient and it is a smarter way to play.

Also to take into account that when we have many open tables, taking notes will be very complicated and will even interfere with our game. Ideally, in this case, take notes at the end of the session.

I think I'm one of the few who never used HUD

I really like to taking notes as much as possible, with so many players in tournaments it's always good to mark them and get a sense of his playing style

there's a lot of bluffer out there, HUD won't remind me of that :biggrin:

I also think one of the best online poker tools
New player question alert....art what's your?

Notes,

I can remember faces, people and types. Pretty good at reading types.

If I’ve seen you before, I generally have an idea of your style, aggression.

Politically Incorrect below...
Let’s face it, fat old guys over 50, middle aged, 45 to 32 years, Asian’s, , older women, younger women, young guy in sun glasses, are stereo types, which can be a good indicator of play before play starts.
Body position, cell phones, drinks, chat, pretty much let you know what your up against.

By the end of the 3rd level, most players are pegged, being human means, generally that’s it.

Taking notes works if your looking at your own play, I guess, but since I mostly see same players at the same games, home, or Sunday casino, notes aren’t needed, when unknown shows up, notes aren’t going to help.

After all, every training course always say, usually, if, %, but never an absolute!

:D;):p:):(:confused::rolleyes::cool::eek::mad::icon_smur:jd4::jd4::jd4::jd4::jd4::musicus::musicus::musicus:

I never took notes on any player or had the opportunity to use any software to help me. I think I have a good memory about what each player who is at my table is doing and I also watch others rivalen at other tables, only when a possible final table is approaching in a mtt. I only play mtt tournaments and poker being a game of situations where many variables influence, I know that each moment will be different regardless of whether it is an opponent with whom I have already played. If I dedicated myself to playing cash game, I would surely be inclined to download a help software.

I have taken a few notes, but in the tourneys I normally play in I see a lot of the same players so I know how they play.

I've been taking notes recently to get better, but they always get so clustered, I've been trying to create an excel where I can easily find what I've written down on a hand before, but it's too hectic and I've been trying to find a better way to do it. Anyone's got any recommendations?

yes I take notes but my approach isn't very organized. I do also color-code fish-agros-passive etc. it's a skill and it should be worked on seriously. you can confuse yourself sometimes with inaccurate notes or wrong labeling

Yes. HUDs stopped working where I'm playing. The other day a note I took in the past allowed me to exploit a manaiac in fast fold. Agree with incorrect labelling so the most reliable notes are stuff like "does this guy open limp and does he have a raising range" "is he passive with good hands" "does he ever 3bet" "does he shove a lot" "is he a station" "does he check wet flops or does he cbet all hands irrespective of flop texture". If i see showdowns with a lot of trash I take a nite too. But I would not rely heavily on notes relating to precieved frequencies. Someone might be running hot and you may label him a maniac and somone might be card dead and you label them a nit.

I also use color codes. Red is aggrowhale or shover. Green is fit or fold fish. Blue is sticky/station fish. Purple is trapper. Orange is reg. Yellow is bad reg. And pink is Nit.

I colour code people, but also recently have started to write notes on people whenever I see them play a hand that reveals a little about their play style.

It's already paying dividends. Have you ever watched Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince? In potions class, he has the book that belonged to the Half-Blood Prince which has tweaks to the potion recipes that allows him to excel in his class. These little notes hidden by the Half-Blood Prince are similar to what my notes are now. I get put onto a table and they're colour-coded, great - but a note which says that they like to limp in with Ace+any kicker is a really helpful signposter when playing against them!

I tried taking notes a couple of times and that didn't help me at all. Maybe because I was taking them wrong, or maybe I used them wrong... Now I feel like it takes way too much time and they are almost useless in large tournaments

I use colors for player types and notes usually only to mark outrageous behavior

I think that you can take notes by playing constantly in some kind of narrow circle, say no more than 100 people

i love taking notes. its very common for every player at my table to have at least one note. I like to get very specific and use a lot of abbreviations mixed with shorthand to cram a ton of valuable info about scenarios and playstyles, while still being short enough I can read through before the time bank runs out. It helps me tremendously with making good calls against bluffers. I really like what someone mentioned above also, about noting when you give someone a bad beat, then you know they are capable of the mental game of poker and not just a lucky donk.

Especially if you create a shorthand system for yourself. Like I use FNL for players I think play way too loose with any 2 they get. I have a whole shorthand system.
Care to share your short-hand notes & system?

I'll share a couple;
MCS = major calling station
FL2L = Loves 2 Limp (imagine what the F stands for)
RB = river bluffer (when the tendency is confirmed more than a couple)
SWN = shoves with nuts
CFD = chases flush draw
A2SAP = any 2 suited any position
TT = easy to tilt
3BB = 3 bet bluffer

I use colors to denote - extreme tendencies and also to identify solid players.

i have my own system using the note features in carbon and acr, but i started using the quick player tags instead indicated by a color or an icon such as a "fish" or a "donkey". it helps me because i tend to see the same few people in the sngs especially
What's the difference between fish / donkey?

notes

Good morning everyone.
Poker is a game of people, imagine that you have the information that the player is bluffing, he goes All in on the river, what do you do?
Easy.
In another hand, a different player goes all in on the river and you don't know if he's bluffing what you do?
Now if you have a note from players, where player 1 is a bluffer and player 2 is a solid player, it's less difficult for you to make those decisions.
I play poker for a little over a year, now I know that it is very important to take notes from the villains, I play a lot of sit go with 90 players and the notes I made from many players help me a lot to make better decisions, there are players that when All in go depending on the stack, I know they are at the top of the range and I know of players who are going all in with QJo at the start of the sit go.:cool:

I've never really took consistent notes, especially when it comes to online play. While I'm sure it couldn't hurt I choose not to take notes. It's probably something I'll start to do more during live play. I play with a group of folks weekly and I'm sure it could tremendously help me then.

Depends on my mood. I do sometimes with the starting hand and guess the hand of my opponent by following steps from a link and act on that which a poker player has shared it helps a lot.:rolleyes:

Something very interesting that happens to me are my notes, because if you can't remember what you ate a day ago, there is no reason to trust your memory to keep the most important points of a class, game or professional meeting. However, there is a simple way around this problem: annotations. Taking notes helps you to highlight the most important aspects of a subject and saves details that could go unnoticed, in addition to significantly increasing your productivity.

I think that in order to record, you need to play a lot with the person you are recording on, which is extremely rare for me online, because I think that recordings in modern online poker are not really necessary

I don't play cash games or use a HUD, so my notes are extremely important. I always focus on how each person is playing and after a few hands and show downs and of course those that shove over 100 BB every hand until they get lucky or get knocked out. I will write down the hands played, as well as how many BB were put into the pot, pre and after the flop. As the tournament continues, if I already have a quick note on someone, I will get into more specifics. They may play different in the middle or late stages.

I stopped taking notes a long time ago, they personally do not help me in playing tournaments with a lot of players. It’s better to try to improve your game than play by notes.
