If you only have just a few buy-ins, I would suggest SnG's. Tournaments have high variance and the chances are you will lose your tiny bankroll before you ever cash. Cash has lower variance, but the skill level tends to be higher.
SnG's can be bought in to for as little as $0.10 on some sites and smaller fields means much lower variance.

Firstly ask yourself the question what do I enjoy the most? For some that's MTTs (like me) for others that might be cash. I'd just stick with that.

Having said that though, for any tournament player it wouldn't hurt to have a solid cash game background as most tourney players suck playing deepstacked compared to most cash game players (so do I tbh, 100bb deep is not my comfort zone).

If you have any kind of aspirations in poker, I think, you need to learn both tournament and cash game play to keep the most amount of options open to yourself. And as you say to not suck completely in the early blind levels of tournaments.

Its not great to jump back and forth every session at least not in the beginning. But maybe take 3 month, where you grind cash games and then take 3 month, where you grind STTs or small MTTs like 18-45 man SnGs.

If you then find, that you enjoy the tournament format more, then its time to get into larger MTTs, as often as you have time for it. If you enjoy cash more, then go back to cash and try to grind it up there.

I set up the post mainly for those who have managed to form a small bank and do not know whether to launch to play cash or tournaments. I ask those who have spent more years in poker: who is the most profitable? What is more exploitable in small limits? what precautions to take in tournaments and how should I play in cash.

Beginner? PLAY ONLY freerolls or hire a coach.

If you are bad at the game playing zoom micro stackes is good to become comfortable with playing postflop wich will help you if you ever play tournaments also 100$ bankroll is enough to play 2nl meanwhile for alot of tournaments you need 200-400 buyins wich is a-lot of money for a lot of people.

In cash games, you can lose your bankroll very quickly, so I only play in tournaments, and very often get into prizes

I think a beginner should start with SNG 9/10-max (but not HyerTurbo).

Best would be there Double-or-Nothing tournaments where you can learn about calling and pushing ranges. Later I would recommend to switch to normal SNG and then to 6-max. When you are good enough in both of them and your bankroll can manage it then I would recommend HyperTurbos and after this MTTs.

The become better/good in postflop play I would recommend cash game when you start with MTTs.

Cash for a beginner is complicated, but if you make an effort and learn, then the option is not bad.
Again, in the cash, you can start with a small bankroll of 30-50 buy-ins, unlike MTT where it is desirable to have 100-200

What works better for your life? Can you play 8 hours straight to get to the end of a large MTT? Do you need the flexibility to get up and leave if your kid starts crying? Those are the questions that you should be asking. The amount of variance is also a factor. How willing are you to cope with swings?
