I had $25,000,000 play chips on Party and never sold them. don't like the site and prefer cash play on FTP.

Found this so most of my chips will be gone.

Earlier this month, partypoker changed their play money chip policy and imposed chip stack caps to non-real money player accounts.

party poker play money chip counts can now only reach a maximum of 250,000 play chips.

PartyPoker’s decision to cap the play money accounts has caused somewhat of an upheaval amongst loyal play money chip players at partypoker.com, many of whom had amassed virtual fortunes only to wake up the next morning to find their hard earned free chips cut right down to a meagre P$250,000.

The official statement via their blog went along these lines: “We recently implemented a new policy that restricts play money accounts to a maximum number of chips. This decision has the vast majority of our play money players in mind, and is intended to stop the transferring of chips from account-to-account outside of regular hands of poker… Although this may have affected some play money players in the short term, the decision was made in the interest of our play money games and the fair play benefits it will bring. We will not reverse our decision.”

PartyPoker Play Money Chips, bankrolls depleted
For those who have never tried a play money account at PartyPoker, here’s how it works, players opening an account at PartyPoker get 1,000 play chips to begin with and are permitted two reloads of 1,000 play money chips within 24 hrs, prior to the new policy players were permitted to amass an infinite amount of chips. Players were never allowed to transfer their play money winnings between each other yet lo and behold there were players caught dumping chips to each other for a price. In addition to this some play money players stooped as low as selling their play money chips on ebay, with other sites like chipempire selling play-money chips where players could purchase a billion chips for a mere $400.

Now understandably if playing poker for play money is your thing and your bankroll was bursting at the seams you would be pretty upset with the new policy, but let’s be realistic here, it’s only FREE Play-Money, besides I have tried out play money games at Party Poker in the past and it certainly can’t be called poker it’s like a full on donk fest with all-in’s and re-raising galore, certainly the skills are somewhat lacklustre vs. that of the real money poker games.

My suggestion to all of those die hard PartyPoker play-money chip players is quite simple really why even get upset just move on and play for real money, as let’s face it, you were wasting your time in any case and if you have any skill then put it to the true test by playing for real and if you are that upset with PartyPoker.com, minimum deposit is $10 at full tilt poker or pokerstars for first time depositing players plus it’s coupled with a bonus to reward you for your effort.

I suggest you try FRs, I built my bankroll from them, check out Harrington's books and Collin Moshan wrote a beauty on SNGs when you have raised a bank. Good luck.

True, and the field is usually less than 90 players and pays $2 at 18th. Not bad. I've cashed once out of the 2 times played.

I would be playing freerolls if I were you. Play money games are pretty much like playing bingo.

While there is a sane reason to not play play money poker, it still seem to me the biggest reason most people council against it is unspoken. They want new fish!

Disagree... I believe that most (if not all) on here would be doing their best to help you by telling you.. "DON'T BOTHER WITH THE PLAY MONEY crap!!!" It's a waste of your time & if anything it'll only enforce poor habits that you'll just need to break anyways. Way better off to just try to learn the right way to begin with.. (right = the style you gravitate towards & what becomes profitable for you... although in something like a SNG/STT.. there can arguably be a 'right way'.. & a wrong way (or not so right, lol)).

Do some reading - I see you picked up a Phil Gordon book.. great stuff.. but unfortunately the wrong book. You want 'Little Green Book' for sure!!!

Read up on some beginner SNG strategy and give some micro buyin SNG's a shot (or try 2nl cash tables). Whatever you pick it's best to try sticking with just one variation of the game for awhile until you're very familiar with it (ie. SNG's 9plyr.,.. just stick with 9plyr. for awhile, then consider branching out to the 18's, & 27's).

I can't understand why anyone would suggest/recommend the play money stuff???? It's a joke.

Play free rolls

If you have a choice between play money and free rolls---play free rolls for sure. Play money play is useless for learning and a waste of time. Free rolls for sure if you have a choice. ;)

freeroll is not that easy to win. since you are have no intention of winning alot of money but to learn the art of poker more, then freeroll would still be more suitable then play money.

Play money tables are fine if you are using them just to learn the rules of a game, and get them drilled into you. They are not much good if you want to learn how to play against thinking players. The techniques and strategies you learn at play money tables to do well against poor but super-aggressive players do not work well in real money games where many players do care if they lose and play with more care. And other plays become far more productive.

It's been so long since I didn't know holdem that I don't remember how it was when I was clueless. But in other games, like Omaha, Omaha H/L, Stud H/L, Razz, Badugi, 2-7 NL Single Draw, 2-7 Triple Draw -- games with a new set of rules -- it can be quite useful to play a bit at play money tables. You do learn the basic rules even if you don't learn how to play rationally. If you are lucky, you find yourself at a play money table with thoughtful players, which doesn't happen much at NLHE play tables. Then play a couple of play money tourneys or freerolls at these games, or more than a couple. The tables and tourneys are full of people who are as or more clueless than you, but you still have to figure out how to survive with donks at the table. You can learn patience, how to wait for playable hands, how to fold when you are sure you are beat. Good skills to learn. As the tourneys progress, the poor players fall by the side for the most part and the play becomes more interesting.

Play money tables get you started. They can help make you comfortable with the rules of that game. That's what they exist for.

Freerolls take it to another level. The goal there is to stay in them as long as you can, while making +EV plays. I do not agree with the concept that you must get a huge stack early on, but it's nice when that happens. If you can make the money, even a small payout, fairly consistently (20%), you are probably going to be ready for real money games.

Hmm. That seems interesting for a beginner. I wonder why they dont advertise it anywhere. On the other hand making a lot on the bingo play money tables might not be that easy anyway, at least it will consume a lot of time probably.

When I started with play money I had to keep a separate window open with a list of hand ranking to know when I had the best hand then I switched to freerolls and it was like jumping in the deep end of a pool either you drown or you get the hang of it and I spent the first couple months getting knocked out in the first 20 minutes now I can consistently run deep and 3 days ago I cashed in the bodog freeroll for 3.50 and I still use play money to work on my multitable skills and thats going ok but definitely stay away from low level play chip ring games and rebuy tourneys and just my opinion but Bodog has the best freeroll GL what ever you choose

I really don't see that there is that much to learn from freerolls about playing well. The blind structure and aggressive nature of the players make it impossible to play tight, ABC poker which is what a beginner should be learning. There's no time to fold a hand when the odds are not in your favor, you just have to shove and hope for the best.

And even if you do win enough to have a starting bankroll, if all you've done are freerolls, then you have just a little experience playing on the bubble, and no experience in ring games and probably none playing heads-up. These are things you can get from play money that you won't get from a freeroll.

So you likely bust out and go back to square one at the freerolls. But how are things going to be any different the next time around unless you learn to play ring games, and/or to be competitive in a small tournament instead of just lucky.

In the end, you can keep depositing until you figure out how to be a winning player, or you can learn as much as you can before you ever make a deposit. You will probably learn faster by jumping into real money games, but if what you're learning is that poker isn't your game, it's going to be an expensive lesson. Play money can teach you the same thing, and all it costs you is time.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about tournaments like the Full Tilt $150 freeroll where 7500 people play for up to several hours for the chance to win a top prize of $18. There may be other freerolls where the field is smaller and the prize is bigger so that people are actually interested in playing well... but I haven't played in any of those.
