I started playing live games recently in the hopes of beating the game and making some extra cash. I do enjoy playing, so it would be an ideal source of secondary income.

I don't derive one single ounce of joy from playing the slots though, so it almost can't be a strictly gambling thing for me. I think that's where the addiction lies: in the gambling. Not so much the particular game you're gambling at.

adddiction

I believe addiction to poker is a real thing, it fits easily within pathological gambling diagnosis. People suffering from such a kind of mental disorder might be driven by thrilling experience of playing for money, especially the idea of putting their own cash into risk with every moment of play. Then there is of course the antcipation of winning and so earning large financial gain which would not be normally achievable by standard earning methods (job?) they are accustomed to in their day-to day life routine.
Also there are some other aspects to the game like taste for beating other players, which could also in certain individuals grow to dangerous levels.

I believe every playr must keep in mind that these deviations are real and they are always potentially developing inside every one of us, maybe in subconscious form, which is specially dangerous.

Development of pathological disorders related to poker playing is naturally highly influenced by person's mental health and discipline. These characteristics might quickly be crippled by some e.g. sudden life conditions, like death/illness of family, accidents, events with high and unexpected level of impact on our life conditions, and so on. So such cases might result in dramatic shift in our understanding of what poker game represents for ourselves, meaning the unhealthy risks of addiction symptoms and catalysts might manifest themselves quietly and secretly in our minds and affect our behavior and decision making very substantially without realizing by affected individual.

"Treatment of any addiction begins with admittance". It is my opinion (though i only speak for myself) that we are all "hooked" on poker, in some way, whether it's just to be at the table, or to make money, the "drug" has it's satisfaction. Not long ago, i believed i will never be a poker "addict", but i came to realize that i like it... sometimes more than i should. I've seen a lot, both new and old users around here and in real life, that claim they play poker strictly and only for fun, yet, they're at the table every chance they get. Some... leaving behind important parts of their life (jobs, friends, family etc...), just to be there for a little while.
Are you?... "hooked" on poker....
- Who want's to go first?:D

For me, poker is a hobby that brings pleasure. But in the near future I hope to study the discipline of hold'em and try to increase my bankroll and further rise in limits.

it can be a second income but it can also make you loose alot of money

I like poker but I do not think I'm addicted, for me it's a hobby mixed with the intention of making money and turn it into a profession but I do not think I left any of my personal life for poker
either way you look at it if you play and try to make money then ur addicted

That's the first thing you start loosing... then it's your time... and if you're not careful, who knows.

It's good to know that some actually realize when they are mildly "hooked". Though "addiction" is a very strong word, this is definitely how it begins. Some will never admit it. They will "hobby" the shyt out of poker till' the end of days. What i do know, is that admitting at least to yourself, that the game has you hooked in some form, can give you perspective, in a way that you can actually improve yourself and the game. I had an issue, and until i realized it existed, i couldn't begin to control it.

For me, poker is a hobby that brings pleasure. But in the near future I hope to study the discipline of hold'em and try to increase my bankroll and further rise in limits.
...yeah... you're getting there, you just don't know it yet.

Agreed. Which is partially the purpose of the topic. It's not about what others think of yourself. Those that understand, will never judge, and those that do not, have no right to judge. It's about getting to know yourself at least when it comes to poker, and as matter of general opinion. I'll be waiting for more replies here, because i'm curious about the poll. People vote, but each option has a more deep meaning then what lies at the surface.

I would like to think of myself as a strong-willed and cold-minded person who is always focused and sober, who fights tilt effectively, who makes carefull hand analysis and always plays his best game. Well at least I want to be this person when I grow up) ;)

I live in the village, with the work is bad, health with age is not added. I see in poker a great opportunity to earn money. There is a craving for poker, but not to fanaticism. While playing to a minus.

I would say no, but it's definitely up in the air. Poker is pretty much the only hobby I have nowadays, but I think that's just due to wanting to go pro eventually, so I'm way more dedicated. But it doesn't interfere with my life at all, I still go out 3-4 times a week with friends, only really play poker in the evening, and I've never played in place of working or university.

I do not consider myself addicted not to poker or anything else in life.
One thing and liking something and doing it every day.
But I never left any commitment to do this

I think I'm not as addicted as I used to be. Hundreds of bad-beats will do that to a player.

Poker was a big problem for me had to go to GA. Quit for 10 years and getting the bug again. If you want to quit it’s really hard. I advise to sign self exclusion.
And just play non money games to wean yourself off.

If you want to talk, honestly, then all the players are probably a little poker addicts ... I think the excitement is a drug

I say, I have already noticed an easy addiction. I can't stop playing for a long time:eek:

I think that if someone is dependent on gambling, then he goes to the casino and not to poker. The casino provides a much bigger stimulus from poker.

5 signs of poker addiction...

1. For you not a problem for three seconds to distribute $10.00 a trifle on eight equal stacks.
2. Every time you buy products, you count how many big blinds they will cost.
3. Expressing sympathy for your friend, you say: "bad beat!(badly played»)
4. Your kids are named Check and Raise.
5. You're so unlucky in holdem today, you decide to take a break ... and play Omaha.
