I think that if you know how to play poker ,know when you must bet and when not then tje key for success is patience.I caught myself losing some money due to lack of patience and i think its the main reason.

Yes a lack of patience is huge and undefined goals. People want their bankroll to be huge but don't know how to get it there. They call it a grind for a reason and sometimes it gets tough to "grind" after a horrible beat or playing a loose player who gets lucky.

Technically if everyone play equal it will be a loss-loss.

For example, in a Heads-up:

50% vs 50% to win 2x (200%)

-Rake in Cash Game (5 of 200% (p1+p2 cash))
-Taxes (gov) (0-30% of 100% (px cash))

If you win 50% of two games you will have 90% of your initial money.
If you win 100% of two games you will have, after taxes, 190-133% of your initial game.

Poker (as futures/stock market) is a market of sum zero, but you still have to pay a percentage (in the stock market example) to a broker and pay taxes when you make money.

90% of Traders Loss, 85-95% of Poker Players loss.

In fact the big winner is the "House" and the Government.

Of course you have to have a good bankroll to start with higher levels in the same way you have to be very careful

I think that many people simply do not have the patience. But this is not the most important thing, not everyone has enough money, after all poker - it's not a cheap hobby)

Well I guess its the game. When two people are at the table one person has to win and one person has to lose.

and with the rake you have to do better than breakeven to make a profit or else you still lose money.

House alwways wins

I think people are not successful in poker for the following reason: there is a life behind poker. Some of us need to work, to study, among other things, and you need a source of money to survive.

One thing is very different if you already have money, an economic stability that allows you to focus on poker and nothing else.

Equally for me, you really have to be passionate about poker so that you can devote study time to the game, to the strategies, and to resign other things through the schedules

With online poker, you get to choose who you hang with. Play solo, or with one buddy or a group of six, it’s your prerogative. You control what music you hear, the TV you watch. You also get to play as many tournaments as you want in a day, instead of relying on one or two a day, like most live tournament series. Plus it’s more expensive live. Hotels, food, flights, taxis, massages, tips, all add up. Online, you can live way cheaper.

Many reasons why people don't succeed at poker . Not good bankroll management , they lack of the necessary patience to play right many hours , they might lack of the mathematical backround/theory/knowledge .
Many don't try or don't have the time to evolve/improve their gameplay/strategy , the worst they think their poker is very good , the poker rooms is full of regs , the most important are the lack of skills/knowledge (the laziness to get improved) plus the great number of very good players nowadays .

I think to succeed in poker u have to be patient, disciplined, you have to know about the theory of cash games etc. and you need a good bankroll management. There are many other important factors but i think these are the most important ones.
So if you dont succeed in poker that means you have a lack of some of these factors.
Every beginning is hard and doesnt pay off but if you have succeeded a higher bankroll that allows you to play bigger tournaments or higher cash games i think then the pay off will be worth it.

I think bankroll has a huge part of a losing players habit. Not only that but patience to. I used to play recreationally and found myself in positions where half or even more of my roll was in play. The varience is way to big for the games I was playing. Now that I've become serious about poker I've become very bankroll sufficient so the swings are tolerable and I still get to have loads of fun playing.

Good post. I just don't think there are enough that can win. You have big winners, big losers, break evens. With higher rake, the break even or small winners can become losers. Over time there aren't enough big losers as poker has become harder so that means there are less winners.

I'd like to add that in terms of results, feedback in poker can be very inconsistent. When it's so easy to write off a string of losses and equally easy to consider such a string an indication that you're no good, you can get people who are convinced they suck at poker and give up when they're actually quite good, and people who really DO suck at poker who think they're all that. What even IS a good poker player, how do you even KNOW you've "made it" to a "good" skill level?

(I think this will be my next blog topic, thanks!)

From a mathematical stand point, is the fact that only between 10 & 30% Get payed, so 90 to 70% are losers.

To be consistently on the winning side is even harder, if you do the statistics you will find out that only between 3 and 5% of all players will be in this range, and even then there is no guaranty that you will keep been a winner! :deal:

Good question,
Succeeding at poker accomplishing goals... These things can definitely mean different things to different people. My situation is a good example for years I played recreational $1/2 live poker. I tried to learn a little about poker, and I believed I was better than the average player at my casino. About 2 years ago, I suffered a back injury which left me disabled, unable to earn a living. I get a check which pays my rent and food but little else. I have "time", so I decided I was going to earn extra money playing poker. I have put hours into studying the game learning about equity, pot odds, etc.... I play live $1/2 n 2/5 and play online MTT's and low cash stakes. My goals have changed and so my poker habits had to change. I do not consider myself a professional poker player but I believe that I will get there if I continue to put in the "time" playing and studying. This is where most people struggle, you can not stay at the same level, the game is getting harder and harder to beat. Rake is tough, competition is tough, you have to continue to get better to succeed

In order for there to be winners there have to be losers so of course not many people succeed at poker also it is your dedication and skill not luck and chance
