People who think of poker as a sport-which it clearly isnt- love tournaments bc it gives them a simulated "game" experience....

There is a beginning, a middle(cashing), and an ending (FT). One person wins.....and everything is out in the open(well, except true ROIs which are almost always pathetic outside the truly elite IN THE LONG RUN WITH REGARDS TO LARGE BUYIN DONKAMENTS).

But, AGAIN, poker IS NOT A SPORT....IT IS A GAME.

Games have no true beginning or ending unless participants agree to some arbitrary end point before initiating the game( freezeouts, etc.)....

I also believe MTTers are folks who hate playing very deep and having to make marginal or very difficult laydowns generally. Tournament poker for the most part is the triump of coolers over laydowns....most great players in MTTs probably call a bit too loosely in order to build an exploitable stack and ride variance to where all the money is- i.e. the top 3.

Cash players dont need variance...the folks that walk out of the casno with the biggest stacks usually arent the biggest winners in cash games in the medium and certainly long run. Its usually the folks who come in, play good solid TAG poker, never or rarely spew and leave up a buying or so consistently who are the true winners in the game.

To put it plainly:

If you are looking for an outlet to replace athletics....where competitiveness is really out in the open and where results are known to all, play tournaments...but dont whine when you realize very, very few folks make MEANINGFUL money consistently at them when rake and losses and opportunity costs are figured in.

If you are looking to be a profitable gambler, play live cash and perhaps some large field medium buyin tournaments interspersed. Be happy with grinding out a good hourly in a relaxing environment which allows you to gamble without being on TV or on Pckt 5's....etc.

I think that I like the competition of a MTT.

In a ring game you can play real well but the person playing you can reload and reload.

So I guess this is why I prefer MTT`s...

a) I enjoy the competition
b) I can`t change my mindset from the competition to a ring game.

I also think, for me, if it was just about the cash it would become boring and `just another job`

I'm a great believer that if you do something because you enjoy it and then you excel in that field, the money will follow

Wait, and you think this is a BAD thing?

Poker is gambling...much like a casino if you have an edge you hope your gambling partner has an unlimited bankroll if he has chosen to give you odds.

If you want to make real money at poker, it is basically a job.....especially these days with competition being what it is....im not sure what youre looking for, but if you buy into the glamour the WPT tries to see....thats LOL on you.

Most folks on the circuit were always staked and broke....and thats why WPT fields are back to pre boom sized today and thats why EPT fields are even shrinking unless they slash buyins.

Ok, for Mercier and those who got sponsored its a pretty fat life, but for everyone else MTTs is hardly a glamorous life.

I have the exact opposite opinion. There is nothing worse than being chained to my computer desk for 8 hours just so I can take a bad beat before the final table in an MTT. Also, the average potential winnings in cash are much higher than in other formats. And many other reasons.

Once you start to look at the game differently you will start winning at poker. Its a situational outplay vs outplay your opponent, most people over value their cards too much rather than position bet sizing and taking down pots in the mean time. Then the coolers and heaters happen. It depends on the persons mindstate about poker which determines a winner from a losing player.

As you seem to be confused...

A) No, I didnt say it was a bad thing.

B) In your next point...I didnt say it was a sport, however, be it a game or a sport, it is still competative - or at least MTT`s are.

C) I said I can't change my mind set from MTT`s (Survival) to Ring games

D) For the hours I play, I make a nice profit every month AND enjoy the competition of MTT`s

For MTT player see `entrepreneur`
For ring game player, see `statistician`

:D

Pre-Black Friday I would be found in 2-3 MTTs and a couple of ring games. ADD at it's best.

If it's the pace of the games and lack of action, like some had said start multitabling! Start with two until comfortable and then add one at a time as long as you can handle it!

Also, make sure you have enough bankroll to be sitting with all the buy-ins too.

But, then again some people just can't stand cash games and some can't stand tournaments. Find your comfort zone & GL!

Don't know if I have said this already, but the main reason I would play ring games is it seems to be a better way to build up FPP`s.

The only issue here is that I don't really know if FPP`s are worth much.

I play Rush for excitement, grinding cash wears me down mentally.

I like cash games because i feel like there is less variance... It puts more of an emphasis on good solid play.. you can be card dead for an hour in a ring game and still come out on top.. in a tournament you can play AMAZING for 3 hours go completely card dead and end up with nothing to show for your play... Tourneys are great because you can hit a big score from a small buyin but i just enjoy cash game more
