I used to work in a bookmakers and its not the game or sport that is the problem. It is the irresponsibility of money in gambling, the persons keep trying to chase a big win.
You had people in debt, gambling their full paycheck away, in order to try and pay that debt and resolve all of their problems. Only for them to get worse and worse, as their stake gets higher and higher.

I was in a bad place when I was single, borrowing money from Friends and having to survive from pay packet to pay packet, was hard when I paid back all the money I owed. It only changed when I met my Wife and I decided right then I had to stop gambling.
I still like a flutter now and again but I feel more mature in my Gambling, I only ever gamble with money I can afford to burn! And if I cannot afford to lose it, I don't use it! It is that simple!

Poker is not a problem, the problem is in addiction, not in restraint. If you are a beginner, never play for your own money. Always start with freerolls. From my little experience: freeroll won 1¢, then 18¢, then 85¢, 2$15¢, then S&G (25¢ and buy-in $1). The bank is now ~$700. I'm moving on. The main thing is to determine the limits of losses.
