I often get depressed when I play poker and lose, then I feel like I am worthless.

Hey friend. I admit I didn't read all the other replies. But I read your post... And scrolled down to answer.
Without getting into too much. I too have had some struggles with depression. Or whatever acronym you may like.
Substance abuse. Check.
Never cured, just keep going.
The ups and downs of a poker game are little mole hills by comparision. Be careful and aware to stay within your means.
And enjoy! It won't fix other problems. But if it helps you forget them for a while. Idk. Seems pretty cool to me :)
Good luck man.

Not to sound too negative, but I hear warning bells with a statement like that.

It sounds like what compulsive gamblers say to justify why they play. It might not be a bad idea to ask yourself what the focal point of your enjoyment of poker is. Is it playing the game; winning a pot; feeling the rush of the action; escaping the real world or something else altogether. It's helpful to identify some of the addictive qualities present in gambling to avoid a hole just as deep and dark as depression.

Be careful. Best wishes.

" When I'm playing, I forget everything and I feel good" - sounds a bit ... well you know.
Dont get me wrong I love this game, I never felt addicted to it BUT the gambling problem is a real thing after all. Be mindfull.

Friend, first look for your family and a good doctor to treat depression, this is certainly the best thing to do.

I am BiPolar. Poker does help unless i am in a bad place than a perceived bad beat sets me off so I do not play when in a real bad place. But yes it helps you focus on poker instead of other shit.

I made certain rules for poker that I follow to prevent it from becoming a problem instead of an escape.

Deposit amounts
Deposit frequency if needed
Withdrawl amount
Hours for playing
Stop loss
Scheduled days of buying in and not a freeroll

I think that you need to understand the reason for your depression and it is better to contact the specialists.

Hello like most said, poker runs much variance, sometimes can make you feel good and sometimes not. For now okay if it helps you, but seek help to be better, greetings friend

If poker makes you feel better, good for you. It's better then using pills. Make sure you use good bankroll management and plan for the future.

Hello! If you are unemployed, you need to go to work my friend and make poker a hobby. Then surely there will be no depression, because the head will be occupied with other things. Poker changes lives for the better very few people, to make good money in poker, you need to invest a lot of money.(it comes to poker income)but about depression, then poker is not a cure(it's worse)Life is not easy, same in poker

Depression and the game are not very friendly. When you win you will feel good but when you lose it will be the opposite. Play freeroll tournaments if that distracts you but do not risk your money, the one you need to live to distract yourself.

Well, poker (like all gambling) can really compound depression. Yes it’s enjoyable and fun, until you run into a few bad beats, lose money, get angry, start chasing.... poison for something like depression!

Depression is a hard issue to deal with..
The variance in poker literally affect my mood just about every time I play..
if you're playing for big $$ and you take a bad hit one day.. it can really mess you up. However, if you just playing for fun.. freerolls and play money, yes it can help blur everything out for a while..
just be careful.. I know a couple people that have gone into depression because of poker!.. just sayin.

as a persone living with mental illnesses, I cna say, it helps me a lot.

it's not the best thing (anyway, what's the best thing for that) but it gives you tools for other things of life...

You'll see, your entire life will become a big poker game... where you'll win and lose.

Hang on buddy. As I said, it's not perfect but if you feel good, try to use the tools of poker to continue in life!

I play poker as a hobby and have had depression off and on for several years. The best advice I could give you is to not use poker as a "crutch" for the depression but rather an outlet to help alleviate. Wish you the best with your depression and poker endeavors buddy.

Just remember that one too many losses can send you over the edge. Really hope that you are getting the help you need to help you to defeat depression. If you're purely playing poker because it helps you feel relaxed and takes you somewhere else in your mind then I definitely recommend keeping the limits as low as possible, maybe even just freerolls.

Seriously though, all the best buddy and I hope you can beat it.

what is good about poker is that it made us dream, especially that we improve the game, hoping to have a lot of money from poker games, but this makes the game even more fun. There are emotions, situations of fear, of relief, of pleasure. but the psychological fight between the opponents is all that gives all the pleasure and charm of poker
