Got fun from history about 1$ chip. Actually I hear alot of about collectioners of not only chips but a real money old-one. This is really can be profitable in long term for some people who are interested in it. Eat healty, do sports, play poker, and of course go Vegas, and save for memories 1$ chip, some day it could cost alot :D

I've used almost everything, even cookies, when playing with my little kids hehehe.
Once, we made our own paper chips, it was very funny.
Today I have my chips in ceramics, we evolve to better.heehehe

it is very good to know the history of the poker chips, I really had no idea what they are made, here in my country casino is prohibited I have never seen a casino card live, I hope to soon meet a casino, here in america southern or vegas ..... but I always thought that the chips should be as well made as the money because the chips represent real money as well

Unfortunately, I never held a real casino chip in my hands so far, as I never played live in a casino. This article has a lot of new infos for me therefore and many things about I never thought so far. But yeah, I can imagine, that the people used money before playing with chips. Here you also can find sometimes people playing in pubs some other card games for money. And then they are using often coins.

The fact, that the poker chips are even more secured than real money really surprised me. But yeah, of course it makes sense to secure them. And I also can imagine, like Chicopaw already mentioned, that there will be more technology included in these chips. It really would make sense.

Funny for me was to read, that the pros are start thinking while they are shuffling.
I guess, I instantly would stop thinking, if I had to shuffle them and the chips would be spreaded everywhere in the casino. :D

Cheerios was the first poker chips I used, meaning the first chips I used to play poker with. its cool how casinos make their poker chips, putting so much work into them without it being forged by anyone else.....microchips and serial numbers?? that's pretty smart if you ask me.
Very interesting topic to read, in Future the poker chips will have rare gems in them!! lol joke

Nice excursus in the history! I like the idea with replacing chips by electronic devices, because it`s very hard to me to count chips of my opponents in live poker...
On the other hand I like to shuffle poker chips, since it calms me down)

I read the whole text and a curiosity surfaced in my head. How much damage did the casinos already have until they can formulate a chip that they can not fake? I think some people have had huge losses, while some cheekbones who are nothing but brawlers have benefited from decent work for others. Unfortunately we have to live with people who are plotting evil every time trying to deceive us, to pass the leg. Just like in life, in poker is identical, we must be attentive to all possible situations.

Interesting article. I did not even think about the history of poker chips. When my friends and I play cards instead of chips, we use coins. But sometimes it can be all that is at hand - sweets, chewing gum, matches

I liked this article. In the home game, we use mostly Soviet-style coins, but if they are not, then we have to look for another option / matches or beer stoppers.I don't have any unique chips, but I hope to get them soon.

Interesting article to get acquainted with the history of poker chips!
Like most of the previous posters, it was popular to play with coins in my childhood :)
Now the chip sets are wide spread and not so expensive, but I will be happy to try out some real casino's chips in a live game :top:

Very good thread about chips

I can't imagine a poker match without our lovely chips. In my humild opinion, in poker the chips system cannot to be swapped for any other system. I guess the ability to count it, the pyschological impact and the glamour of chips can not be replaced by anything even if technology enable it. You can read more about https://www.cardschat.com/history-poker-chips.php here.

Ive played a few games of poker where clothing was used in place of chips. Obviously it wasn't a serious game but I didn't miss the chips at all.

I think a poker game without daughters is like a football game without the ball, I can not accept it.

There was something in the article that reminded me of a scam to watch out for. In casinos cash game chips are different from tournament chips because otherwise one could enter a tournament and just palm a chip or two and try to cash it in or use it at the cash tables.

But the scam is used on unsuspecting players that don't recognize the difference in chips. The scammer palms a chip from a tourney, approaches somebody at the bar, befriends them and after a few drinks says they gotta go, they don't want to wait in the cashier line. "Could you buy this $100 chip off of me to save me the trouble? I'll let you have it for $80 for saving me the trouble of waiting in line." Of course, the chip is worthless at the cashier because it is a tourney chip not a cash chip.

Very informative article. Did not know most of the history of chips I assumed they were around forever.

I only got some cheap plastic ones for homegame, if I ever get the game back up and running on a regular basis I will definitely look into getting some customized ones I always thought they were super expensive.

Nice one , I really don't like the last part some things, sometimes, should remain as they are. Virtual chips? No I don't like it.
I also have a chip from Vegas maybe I should sell it too t a collector.

As for the shuffling not only in poker but also if you talk in front of an audience or if you discussing something serious by having your hands occupied helps the brain function to channel the thought!

Daaamn, if I was that honest chip collector that found out that the 1$ chip on the ebay was worth 15.000$, I could easily forget about honesty for a while. Hope she gave him some of money from the 30.000$ she got.

Also, I am curious to see what chip shufflers will do if Macau chips will be the norm:p

For the future, I'd like to see chips that have microchips in them that can be easily scanned to see the quantity instead of making human errors by counting them. Or do they already exist?

It would be cool to go to the casino Belaggio with their home chips and exchange them for money)))) Now I'll practice shifting the chips like all poker pros do. I've never been able to do this before.

interesting to know how our ancestors played poker even with bones and clay objects, hehehe I do not want to imagine how they got those bones, but poker was and will be the best they have created, since with the past of the years as the article says in 1880 and the big industries began to be interested in all this and created the chips where today we play, and more was the genius thought about something better than putting bones in the bets hehehe

Interesting article, I didn't know that some casinos have a chip embedded into their chips. I just use a standard plastic set, I don't see the need to have expensive chips for a home game.

Last week, my friend wanted to play heads up with me.
The only poker chips he had been the one we can buy in a dollar store.
It's not a good idea to play with those cheap chips in a more serious poker game...
