You are guaranteed to dominate yourself and your bankroll by not following BRM and setting stop losses. I can say that first mistake is a grand delusion of victory. Shooting your cards with a feeling of invincibility, regardless of how weak they are. This will certainly lead to defeat over time if choosing revenge over folding.

Knowing how to play poker well and play well is two different things. Many players play well because of their knowledge and gaming experience, but you need to be careful not to let the game on autopilot.

Only play what you can afford, no more..

My poker rule is: Only play what you can afford, no more.. What you can afford monetarily, emotionally, time spent with family, friends.
When I go to a casino, I never use my credit card, for example. No shame in limiting losses, or gains, for that matter; the game should be the thing, not trying to make money.

Who in your life has not tried to deceive yourself thinking that everything would work?
in many times we think that we can deceive ourselves, with tricks of memory, saying ... in the end everything will be fine, and I will win!
We can say that this is rather a first mistake of a poker player, be it beginner or advanced, many say has a limit to play and if wins (x),he stops,to .... or if loses the value (y), he stops .
How to know when poker is dominating you to the point of making you not realize that you are breaking your bankroll and thus leading you to a financial and pisicoligic defeat?

If everyone won, what would be the point in playing?

This. Never play above your limit. It's not smart to play if you have to dip into your emergency fund, or if you are almost broke. I'd imagine poker would be less fun if you are playing with a lot of pressure, from areas like the 2 I mentioned.

If you're serious about poker then you are keeping track of all your sessions and know all of your wins and losses. If that is the case you will certainly know when things are getting out of hand. It's up to you to decide whether to try to continue to play through the downswing or pull the plug. In the end, unless you play at some super friendly home game there will need to be more losers than winners in order to sustain the game since most games take a rake from the pot. That means the average player will lose rather break even in the long run. Add to that the fact that successful players many times move up to higher stakes where the game is tougher and lose there and there are even less winners. With that in mind I would change the thread title to "not everyone is a loser" as I think that is more accurate.

I think you have to play several years, always studying to improve your game, and if you do not get a positive balance even small, you should think that poker is not your thing. If you are a medium level player over time you have to get a positive balance.

I'm afraid the same is true for addiction. gambling addiction is based on the premise that it is only a matter of time before all of your losses will be wiped out and the winning will start. It is a fanatic hope that can never be properly challenged by your rational mind and ends up leading to desperation. If you play beyond your means, be careful. Good luck.

Its kind of like fighting (MMA). If your not careful a beginner fighter can knock you out. Its never over until its over and you cant let your guard down when you start feeling invinsible. No one is unbeatable.

In poker, the winners who have a bigger bankroll and are able to compete at a higher stake and win a bigger prize. But control should work. And no change in value. Stay man disciplined.

That logic applies to every field in life not just in poker.

Not everyone goes to the best universities.

Not everyone gets the best jobs.

The good life is for very few people.

poker is quite dynamic. you have to steadily upgrade your techniques and yet no guarantees that these upgrades wont pull the plug off the bankroll sink. lol. If everyone got better the best of the best would still win - leaving the rest... to lose.
