It can really help in the sense that it makes time go by faster. A lot of poker (live at least) is waiting for good hands, and boredom can be a terrible thing for your game if it makes you play crappy hands that you otherwise wouldn't be playing.

If you're listening to music to pass time it could prevent this from happening.

All the negatives are also true though, so it depends on the individual and what their strengths or weaknesses are. If boredom is a problem it could solve it.
