You left your 9 and 7 year olds with a 14 year old for the weekend? I have serious doubts about your judgment beyond storing your poker password on the PC. Who was actually responsible while you were gone?

9yrs and 7yrs

i really just needed her to make sure they dont burn the house down

WIth the consequences of what she did whilst you were away I think I'd prefer to come back to a pile of smouldering ashes.

:D

Would the OP be posting on here if he'd come back and she'd trebled his money ?

At the end of the day, its just money. The story can last a lifetime :)

You will get your money back if you pressure her parents enough or take them to court, after all the parents are liable if the child steals something.

Its a good lesson for us all to learn, protect our accounts when there is a notable sum of money in it.

On the one hand I completely agree with all the points about "you should be smart about protecting your password/computer/etc"... However I think saying he's responsible or whatever is going way too far. The level of computer security you need really depends on who has physical access to it. I think not expecting your babysitter to rob you blind falls into the category of reasonable. Really is this any different than finding $1000 cash in your sock drawer and taking it home?

HOWEVER that doesn't change the fact that somebody willingly committed theft. I don't buy for a second that a 14 year old wouldn't know that they shouldn't be doing what they were doing.

Still sucks man and I feel for you. Her parents really should reimburse you for the full amount.
/and then make her earn it back. In another year or two she will be old enough to work a minimum wage job.

I don't think that this would really get anywhere if it went to court simply because the girl didn't actually take anything from the guy. She lost it playing poker to more than likely a bunch of different people. Of course I wouldn't stop bugging the parents for my money back but threatening them with a lawsuit wouldn't really work.

Isn't it technically the same as stealing $1000 from the house and going to a live casino? Obviously, that wouldn't work with a 14 year old unless she had a fake ID and looked old enough..

Basically she is commiting three crimes
-Playing with your money
-Playing with your account
-Playing under age

Why can't you sue the parents? I thought you could sue anyone for anything in the US and win if you have a good lawyer...

And yes, adults are responsible for the actions of their children.

So I have to post this, since this thread has gone on for a bit. As posted earlier I have 3 girls. When they all reached 16 they didn't want to be seen with us at all. :D So mostly no family vacations after that. I had a very uneventful time with my 2 oldest daughters with that, but when my youngest was 16 I and my husband went for a weekend to Tennessee and left her at home. It was summer and the 17 year old who was very religious at the time was going to a huge christian rock festival in Pennsylvania, thus leaving the 16 year old home alone. Long story short we got back sunday night and my car that had been parked in the driveway was missing gas and the sideview mirror. Took some yelling to get it out of her, lol. Anyway she just had my first granddaughter not to long back. While I was holding her one day fawning over her, I stated awww just think one day she will be 16 and stealing your car. :D Yes you can laugh on down the road. Moral of the story is, when leaving teenager in home, lock up everything, including the spare keys. :)

Well that pretty much sux majorly. At least I lost them at the tables and can only blame me :D

If you want, I'm not in the US and wouldn't have a prob uploading money to wherever....so I could put them on a site from you. Of course, that depends on your level of trust to not get ripped off :p

Post the hand histories or honestly I think this is a hoax.

Could be OPs idea of seeing if there was some way to get his money back after he tilted maybe by contacting Stars and saying a 14 year old blew it. Thats just my opinion on this..

The thing that prevents any legal recourse is that it appears he lives in Washington State and I believe that is one of the States where online poker is frowned upon, if not completely illegal. Meaning if he mentions suing and the babysitters parents do any research at all, OP could end up in deep doo doo.:(

That really sucks! Maybe she didn't realize it was real money. Our kids got into our poker account and promptly cleaned out all our play chips but they were only play chips, so no big deal, but it is amazing how quickly they lost them all.

Guess you'll have to hit the freerolls. $15 for 1st place on Fulltilt You can do it!! Best of luck to you. Hope you get it worked out.

well honestly i don't know how a 14 yr old even knew how to play and sit down and all that but i guess they can be smarter than they look.

My son is getting ready to turn 13 and he knows all about online poker. Kids these days are a lot more savvy about those kinds of things than you think.

Seriously, I have babysitters and firends and even my boyfriend who access my computer constantly. EVERYTING is locked down. Hell I even log out of Cardschat and my other message boards when I leave the PC. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I don't want anyone in my stuff - much less in my money.

Live and learn - but I would talk to her parents. After all, what she did was no different than if she went into your wallet and stole a thousand bucks.

What if she would've run hot? Sir, you don't need to pay me for watching the kids, but you do owe my $10K.

I do wonder if she knew it was real $$. She may have thought it was just a game like on MSN and Yahoo, no real $$ involved.

This has got to be one of the worst stories ever. Ive heard of going on tilt and blowing 45k. But going on vacation and having your 14 year old baby sitter do it for you.. crap salad.

This defenetly is a legal issue. Get a lawyer fast. Unfortunatly it will probably cost you that $1000 to pay the lawyer. But there are other things to consider, $1000 theft is a felony (I believe). And criminal charges should be filed.

Think about it this way, if you stole money from a casino, lets $1000, and you got caught, better believe you would be in jail until you could post bail. Then you would get a court date in which you might actually get MORE time in jail.

I know shes a minor, but there is a principle here. You cant just let her get away with this just because shes a minor, or shes a girl. The world doesnt revolve around HER. And there should be punishiment. Unless she pays it all back.

Girls will be girls?

Is that good enough to just "let it go"?

And Im not saying your saying that, but it honestly is criminal. And he should prosecute.

I get really worked up over people being wronged like this.

This is a little off topic, but still holds the same principles: About a year ago my grandmother was attacked by a pitbull. Shes ok now. But she will have scars on her for the rest of her life. She had to get hospitalization. And I didnt hear about till three days later! She hadnt taken pictures of it yet, she hadnt called a lawyer yet. I actualy had to go over there and force her to do these things!!!
Why wouldnt she have done this? Because most people dont understand what to do when theyve been wronged. The owner (of course didnt have insurance on an animal that by law you HAVE to have insurance on) still hasnt been to jail  !!!
But they are going to get their day in court, and shes going to get paid. Not very much, but the "principle" is what is important. People cant just get away with whatever they want. Makes me want to shoot people.

Its the same here, that girl cant just get away with this. If she were a "he", and a adult, "he" would boken knee caps in my book. At least on the first day.

Legal is the only way you can really do this one though.

ugh...sorry this was so long.

So, if you could get away with murder you would?  :D

Soooooooooo off subject, but since you started it, dog maulings are scary. We had one Here recently where they took the life of a 76yo ladie.
