I would like to say that my game is a bit of both at times. Mostly I play math based, but I have been known to try and be a hero at times... Sometimes it pays off, other times it can be costly. Overall, I feel one is much better off playing the math rather than playing with your heart. I try to leave my "feelings" at home before playing.

Quote stand up comic Mark Ellis: Don't get caught up in math. It's hard and eventually leads to trigonometry. ;)

Cheers!

I follow the math. But, watching the other players and how the are playing is also important. I never follow my heart. I'm heartless at the poker table.

In my opinion both are not helpful when you play poker. You have to be patient and play good hands but of course must also have luck when you play poker.

Often I follow my heart like everywhere else in life too. But recently a good friend of mine convinced me, that it is very helpful to use also maths. Now I would say that the difference between a good and a very good player is, that the first one just listens to his heart but the second one listens to his heart and combines intuition with maths ;)

maths vs ''heart''

hello guys,
i think that maths are the first tool you should use when playing a hand.heart, intuition and instinct should follow.this is the general rule for me.heart and instinct is like not getting aboard on a plane that you learned that finally crashed.if you feel it,dont do it

I do not see how you could use purely just one or the other, both is necessary to make the best decision.

I agree with the most answers. Knowledge and i will add experience. Follow your heart and you will loose in most cases.

Both

I use both, I trust more what I have in hand combined with what is on the table, only then I think logical.

Rational thinking always. Math undoubtedly

But I saw your question as something like "How challenging it is not to follow your heart?"

If this is close to what you asked, my answer is very difficult... LOL
I have been traininig myself to follow math all the time and I have been successful

What do you guys think? Use the math or use your heart when playing poker?

I think in some cases math and in other cases follow your gut. You can check out the other players the whole time and guess what he might have, but you can never be sure.

The combination of the two would be the most interesting of course always striving for logic and mathematics probalidades. "The psychology of poker" Allan Schonmaker is a good book for you to read about it.
