I do not think that it has a sick addiction. When you have the knowledge for playing poker, then you can create your strategy and act correctly whithout falling in unpleasant situations.

Drugs can give you a kind of addiction, like everything can give you an addiction.
No matter what it is, chocolate, coffein, alcohol, sex, nicotine, sport, social media and so on. And of course poker can also bring you some addiction.

But if you talk about the effect, the effect is definitely different. There are drugs, that can cause hallucinations, but poker doesn't.

Which drug are you talking about? Addiction isn't as much about the substance as it is about the mental attachment to it. People get addicted to everything, the addictive power of smart phones can trigger the same hormone responses as heroine. It's a problem. Everyone is a crack addict, where crack is social media.

It depends what you mean.

That's a confusion between addiction and dependency, I think. Addiction is physiological, dependency is psychological. Addiction to a drug defo ain't the same as depending on your phone when you're having a dump!

Peace guys

Mr S

<AFAIK it's about the part of the brain that gets active to "engage" with the object of addiction/dependence. Any pros following that can weigh in on this?>

^ That's the wrong way around, sorry. So, don't confuse your phone with your crack when you're on the loo, you'll need a proctologist!

I would have to agree. It is hard to get away. It is a definite high to win a tournament...regardless of the stakes. Setting a time limit and financial limit is the key.

It is unreasonable to compare the fascination with the lure. I`ts are two different topics.

Coming from a former drug user and opiate addict, yes...the feeling it gives you is quite similar and id say almost the same...its more of an adrenaline rush and heart pumping when you go all in for a big pot but the feelings are remarkably similar... probably why i love playing poker tbh...i would say the actual way you feel doing a shot of dope is different from high stakes gambling but the rush in the beginning is very similar...if youve ever been on dope and played alot of poker youll understand

In my opinion, this is an incorrect comparison.
Perhaps if you see such an addiction, you need to contact a specialist. This can have bad consequences for you.

My opinion is that there will always be people that overdo it, that doesn't mean everyone who plays poker or uses drugs will become an addict. Let me explain why i also think "addiction" is BS. People use the word addiction as an excuse of facing their real problems and as a cape to not assume responsibility for their screw ups. Definitely people will get mad about it. If you say your addicted that translates to me that you have no control over your actions, that translates in you are a ticking bomb that can explode at any moment and you should get treatment or locked up. Either you get your shit together also known as maturing or waist your/others time with drama.

I would not compare it to a drug. highs and lows but that's about it.
