Life is a gamble.

What they've used in court to move poker from a game of chance to a game of skill is prove that in poker you can purposely lose all your money by the decision you make, as opposed to other games of chance (dice, roulette, slots, etc...), where you can't purposely lose all your money. You could win even though you're don't want to.

Is craps a game of skill or chance?

I mean to anyone with a high school statistics education it is pretty simple to prove poker is a game of skill. It's just retarded how the laws are written like the phrase "predominately a game of chance" doesn't really have any mathematical meaning, just like the question of what % of poker is luck what % is chance also has no actual meaning. There's a mean and a standard deviation and from that you can calculate the probability distribution of your results. But most people don't understand even super basic statistics which is also the reason they have no clue how much variance there is in their everyday life that they think they actually have control over.

Yes, poker is a gamble with decent percent of skill and math, that's why I love it.

Read a dictionary and you'll answer your own question. It certainly isn't up for debate.

Soo.... A financial analyst which approaches stock valuation and investment analysis with tools and various valuation measures to reach a more informed decision about a series of stocks would be considered gambling?? Given this individual is in fact a professional.

That individual would be a professinal gambler, yes. Whether you call it "investing" or "wagering" or whatever, they're still putting up money against an event with an uncertain outcome. That's gambling.

The only difference between the financial analyst and the professional poker player is that the financial analyst's gambling is more socially accepted than the poker player's. I guess putting on a suit and tie and going to an office every day, as opposed to putting on a hoodie and going to a casino or sitting in front of your home computer, will help reinforce that impression.

Yes without a doubt it is gambling per definition of the word. But it is also a game of skill and that is where it is a gamble as you are not sure of where you skill is compared to the other players.

Just one thought on it

You know - and please feel free to disagree - I used to compare poker to playing the stock market - acquire information and put money on the most likely outcome.
But there is much more personal control in poker (which is not necessarily a good thing for some of us).
The stock market is actually probably closer to sports betting. The better you are at acquiring information and knowing how it translates to the business then the better you will probably do. But in the end you have no control on the outcome of the event or series of events required for you to profit..

Everyone in the game is gambling pre-flop. After that, usually, at least one person at the table is definately not gambling anymore.

For me it's a hobby that I can make a little money off of every month. So each hand I don't know for sure of the outcome, each day I don't know the outcome and each week I don't know the outcome. But each month I do,,, I make a little money. So you tell me, is it a gamble. I'm serious. I'm not trying to be a smart azz.

There is no argument that is going to change the definition of gambling.......

gam·ble

[gam-buh
thinsp.png
thinsp.png
l] Show IPA verb, gam·bled, gam·bling, noun
verb (used without object) 1. to play at any game of chance for money or other stakes.

2. to stake or risk money, or anything of value, on the outcome of something involving chance: to gamble on a toss of the dice.

verb (used with object) 3. to lose or squander by betting (usually followed by away ): He gambled all his hard-earned money away in one night.

4. to wager or risk (money or something else of value): to gamble one's freedom.

5. to take a chance on; venture; risk: I'm gambling that our new store will be a success.

Are you trying to say poker is not a game of chance? :stupid:

Do you think the casino is not gambling, just because the odds are in there favor on the table games means nothing it is still a gamble for both sides. The casino is risking money when you put down a bet you just don't see it unless you win. On a roulette wheel if you put down a dollar on one number the casino has put down a dollar on all the other numbers except the zeros.

Yes, it is gambling. Tell me what is not gambling. Almost any action someone takes is a gamble. Purchasing anything, performing, or doing anything is a gamble. Poker is a skilled sort of gamble. One does have some sort of skill to play poker, well, most do. Some donks are not considered skilled.

Yes I think it is gambling. It is actually gambling with lot of skills...

It is gambling because that even if you are the best player on the planet and have played every step right you can still be beaten by a specific river card.

Vanessa Rousso - Poker Misconceptions - YouTube

Her first argument (it's not gambling because you don't play against the house) doesn't prove anything though.

By that logic making a bet with a friend on the outcome of a football game isn't gambling either, because there's no rake and you're not playing against the house.

Not playing against the house is what makes poker beatable, but it doesn't change whether or not it's gambling.
