Its a game. To be considered a sport I feel athleticism needs to be involved.

I guesss for someone VERY out of shape it could be a sport, given that it could then involve physical exertion to move chips, muck cards, etc :D

Hey, even moving a computer mouse could be physical exertion for some :p

Poker is a game not a sport.

This is one side of the story. However, with a similar mindset, Football is not a sport either. Nor Baseball nor Basketball, etc etc. And the only real sport might be left to Solo mountain climbing. You would pit yourself against nature every climb.

So, which definition of sport are you talking about?

https://www.google.com/search?q=def...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

Here the term requires some sort of physical activity. Well poker, if played somewhat correctly does require stamina, often more stamina that a timed game like a 9 inning baseball game or a four quarter basketball game. Poker also requires a physical conditioning that helps prevent mental lapses. Granted none of these will build us a 6-pack ab, but they are physical involvement.

If we broaden our understanding of sport just a wee bit to be the active participation in a game against or with others, then clearly poker has most of the aspects of sport that we all are intrigued by.

Since the brain is not considered muscle (by most), the demands placed on the physical body by most traditional definitions of sport are missing from poker.

I personally consider it sport, but not a sport.

But then I sport a goatee, does that count?:cool::eek:

It's not a sport. A sport is an athletic activity. It's a game. Also the whole luck vs skill thing is irrelevant to the question of whether or not it's a sport. To say it's not a sport isn't a knock on poker, it's a great game, it involves skill, it's competitive, but if you play poker you aren't an athlete and it's not a sport.

In my humble opinion it's not a sport. Poker is a casino card game where both skill and luck are involved.

Poker is a sport, weight lifting is an exercise of intelligence, eating cake and ice cream exclusively is a good diet, slapping your wife for criticizing your wardrobe is relationship strengthening, staying all day in the sun in the height of summer is good for your complexion, believing campaign slogans to be gospel truth is sensible, uhhh

Get it?

It is a mental sport, that causes physical exhaustion so therefore, I would say yes. You need to be in physical shape -> to mental shape to LAST in this game.

Hold on fletch, lets see: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/SPORT?s=t

sport [spawrt, spohrt] (This is how Snooky's friends pronounce it "Its a fun spwart" - ed.)
noun
1.
an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
2.
a particular form of this, especially in the out of doors.
3.
diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.

4.
jest; fun; mirth; pleasantry: What he said in sport was taken seriously.
5.
mockery; ridicule; derision: They made sport of him.

So, where is the "physical, therefore athletic, activity" in poker? Getting up to go to the bathroom? Switching from one table to another? Nope, it cannot qualify.

However, after seeing #3 above in the definition of sport: diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime, you can say that poker is a form of sporting fun. You would have to say it like this to avoid confusion with "sport" as in baseball, football, etc.

So, if you simply say "poker is a sport", you are wrong. If you say "poker is a sporting activity", only then are you correct.

Poker - is also a sport? NO. It is not.

You are correct Fletch.

This thread is sports, requires the physical activity of typing (or speaking if you enter stuff via voice recognition).

It is a pleasant pastime, and there is a win/lose competition going on. There are no time limits.
