Hi,

Is there anyone here who's between the ages of 40-60?

I want to ask some questions about getting into poker at a later stage in life. Maybe you can tell me how you got introduced to poker and how long you've been playing?

That would be an excellent age to begin a new pastime. I'm older than that age group and have played poker for around 59 years, but five years ago at sixty five years old I began playing poker tournaments and love it. If you are interested in taking up poker I'd suggest starting off with a basic book about playing Texas Hold 'em since it is the most popular of the games nowadays. Sklansky's book is a good one for beginners.

Once you've got a general idea of the game I'd suggest using one of the free poker sites to practice some before playing for money. Global Poker and Replay Poker are good ones that I have used. There is also Cards Chat's thirty day course which is spoken very highly of around here. :) https://www.cardschat.com/poker/strategy/

And, most importantly, have fun! :)

That's amazing, you must have seen so many different stages of poker evolving as a game.

How did you learn tournaments? Was it mostly books?

51 years old and a 20+ year mainly online player. Enjoy and play mostly MTT's(all stakes) and micro/low stakes full ring cash tables.

I was introduced to card games, board games and poker at a young age so grew playing many different types of card games poker was just one of the many games we played. How I got started online I believe I saw a commercial or ad for pokerstars and it all started there. How I learned was pretty much all books and reading. Got a book case full of all the best and good poker books from back in the day 20+ years ago. After 20 years I can say experience playing goes a long way towards being an okish/decent winning player at micro/low stakes.

I agree with Emily now would a good time to get into poker as a hobby regardless what a few might say the games and MTT's the micro/low stakes aren't impossible to beat. What I'd work on first though is my patience, bankroll management and mental toughness/tilt control. I'd also start by learning a Tight Aggressive style(TAG) and build my game out from there to exploit your player pool as you get experience and stats/history on them.

As where and what to study. With the sheer amount of free poker knowledge and info online pretty much everywhere(including these very forums) I wouldn't start by spending money on any book or course. I would get HUD though. I prefer Poker Tracker 4(just google it). Even if the site you end up playing at doesn't allow HUD's during live online play it's still a good investment that will pay for itself in the long run. As it will help you study, track all your stats/opponents stats and help track how much you win/lose. If the site you play at doesn't allow HUD's then NEVER have the HUD running with the site open. Use the HUD only offline when you close the site out.

Well that's about it off the top of my head. Any questions fire away happy to help and answer any questions best I can.

Cheers!!!

Amazing, thank you! Do you play at the casino ever?

Have you taken any of the paid courses? What do you think of them?

I'm 56 and have been playing online poker for about 12 years. I'm afraid I can't remember what introduced me to it.
However you have made a great start by joing Cardschat. Contribute regularly and get your Cardschat platinum status, then there are plenty of Cardschat freerolls, which are about as good as freerolls get.

I get out to the casino near here I few times a year which I do enjoy even though I find live casino poker a bit boring and slow. Being mainly an online player you just simply see, get dealt and are in way more hands per/hour then you see live.

Honestly yes I have purchased "From The Ground Up" course by Peter Clarke at runitonce poker(google it). That's the only new course/book I've read/taken. I personally enjoyed the course even though a didn't finish it as I only took it to refresh my memory and skills a bit as I'd taken a few years off from playing. Why didn't I finish? Well turns out to still be a winning player in 2023 I didn't need it and I would rather spend the time bit of time I have playing over studying when I don't currently need to. The course was worth the money in my opinion. Checkout Carrot Poker on youtube that's Peter Clarke's free channel. That will give you a taste of what he's like for a coach and his style.

You're quite welcome man. Best of luck at the tables.

Cheers!!!

we have a lot of players on our forum who play at that age, I think they will unsubscribe later and let you come to poker properly at that age and what is the best way to start studying at this age. I just respect players who play at this age I think it's harder for them to play and learn than for young players

I think any age even the age of 70 to 100 would be good age-range to start playing poker. As long as people enjoy it, any age is good.
I first learned the rules around 2013-2014 by playing with colleagues. Some time later I've downloaded a free to play poker App because once I got the poker rush the weekend game with my colleagues wasn't enough anymore. Three years ago I started playing live games and a couple of years ago I started playing online MTTs in PS.

Nowadays I play more live games than online because I'm better live thus I enjoy it more.

I love poker.

Interesting! For live games - do you mainly play tournaments or cash games? The casino near me only offers cash. Have you used any study resources like courses etc?

I am in the age range, began at about 40. It’s pretty easy to pick up in reality. Sit and gos will give you good early exposure and reps and there are always the freerolls too.

Hello. I'm 48 years old. 3 years in Poker. Until then, I really liked chess and spent hours playing. But when I discovered Poker I saw the possibility of combining leisure with the possibility of extra income. I played, and still play, other games that provide financial returns like Axie infinity, but today my favorite hobby is Poker.

I play both live cash and MTTs. May be slightly more MTTs than cash. A couple of years ago I've read a book about psychology and mindset in poker (unable to remember the author and exact title). I read about body language, poker game optimal theory etc. However, although these are all useful, every one is different and I found out that for me the best teacher is practice. So I've learned the most through playing, talking to the people at the tables and asking questions.

Hello everyone. I'm 49 and have been playing poker for almost a year 😁😁, I know it's not much for experience. Friends introduced me to the game, although I've seen people play many times before, but I got into it about a year ago. It's a wonderful hobby, although I don't win very often.

In my upper 50.s and playing a lot in the last 20 years. Age is just a number, but this is also a great age to learn poker. At this point in life we are smart enough to learn what age has taught us and be smart about our poker playing and the money we win. I think younger players can make mistakes that cost them. Yes it can happen at any age but sometime wisdom we learn in life us really valuable.

59 year old here. Welcome to CC and your interest in poker. It’s a great game with lots of strategy. I live in the USA so I get to make it to Vegas 2-3 times a year to play cash and tournaments. My favorite is tournament play. I love to match wits with other players and being competitive.
Have fun playing and when you want to get more serious you will want to study with an open mind to learning because there is so much to learn. Every time you play you should be constantly learning. Take the 30 day course on here to get a feel of what you are getting yourself into and what other players are up to. Good luck!! (forgot to mention been playing casino poker for 26 years).

Hello, im 31yo and playing for about 15 yrs now, but planing to play till rest of my life. In poker theres no rules about age, gender, or anything similiar. So go for it, i wish you good luck at tables.

Up until the late 1990s my experience was basically playing with friends and family, and an occasional poker night for one charity or another. The games were always "dealer's choice", where the dealer could choose between five card draw and five or seven card stud. In games with co-workers some different variants were played that featured different wild cards, etc...

When I started playing in a casino seven card stud was still the dominant game. It wasn't until online poker showed up and for a few years before it was outlawed in the USA I learned to play hold 'em. That is when I purchased Sklansy's book from The Gambler's Bookstore (or something like that) online.

I still played seven card stud when in the casino until 2018 when I started playing poker tournaments, and those were hold 'em. About a month or so after I started I realized that I needed a little more knowledge about the tournament game, so I ordered a book written by one of the pro's. I don't remember who it was but it helped me learn how to bet in a more effective manner that was better suited to tournaments. For cash games I still prefer limit to no-limit, but in the smaller card rooms that isn't always available.

Was it mostly books that helped me with the tournaments? They played a part, but mostly it was playing tournaments every Sunday and practicing on Global Poker. The hardest thing for me to learn was how to compute the size of the pot. That required hands on practice and, like most things, it took some time. I tried a lot of different things but getting a close estimate of the pot is the best method for me. :)

Ohhh I'm a bit over your age bracket, but take CardsChat's free poker course , it can only help. And this forum drove me to understand holdem better years ago when it blew up online. I came looking for the freeroll passwords and have stuck around every since. Had only played stud varieties in the casinos up until then. Poker ever evolves and hopefully you're at the age where you don't think you know everything and want to learn the game. Good luck .
To answer your question I was introduced to it by my grandmother , so almost my entire life.
I have delved back into online here for a few games for the first time in forever, I mostly play live cash and tournaments, I enjoy them so much better and my patience is better too.
