I always hate feeling obligated to tip the dealer. Even if I take down a few hands... I play at $1/2 tables when I play live, if I am up a decent bit and take down a big hand ($50+) I'll tip 5$ or so. I'm not about to tip a certain percentage of my winnings or anything like that though. Maybe a couple 2-3$ tips when I take down multiple hands in a row, but only because I feel obligated after a certain point. Some of these dealers probably make more money than I do, I don't know for sure but have been told their hourly wage isn't too shabby either, and the amount of tips they get are wayyyy more than any delivery driver or a lot of other tip-based jobs.

I also don't think tips should necessarily be expected during play, perhaps after, but not during. I absolutely HATE when somebody at the table calls another player out for not tipping, calls them cheap, or even talk about how much they normally do which always seems to be said at a time to patronize another. Those people can kiss me where the sun don't shine

Says who? You? When did you get your degree in Psychology?
All of what you type is just "your opinion". I don't share it.
I never tip and I never will.

Google why people don’t tip. If you can’t afford it don’t go out. Of course you said you can afford it, so you obviously could care less about other people...

I don’t think you’ll be able to change your thinking... it’s a deep rooted issue you will probably never get rid of, but know that people see you for your actions

I will always tip. The services they provide are benefitial and I don’t treat them like slaves.

i always tip its good karma, good etiquette and dealing is a skill. if you think its easy try it sometime. do the correct shuffle, do the math in your head quickly and try and be friendly to the drunk asshole who is slowing down your hands per hour and not tipping. in other words tip you asshole.

I always tip a dollar. if the pot is massive i'll tip 2. Never more. It sounds absurd and alot of players at my table will roll their eyes at me for tipping so little for a big pot...but tips KILL your hourly. If you win 1000 hands in a year and tip 3 bucks for each...you've just given away three grand. Tips add up fast if you play alot of hours live

All the dealers hate you and rightfully so. At my casino they make $4.50/hr. Can’t afford to tip then don’t go out

There’s also no reason that dealers are bad people vs delivery drivers, waiters etc, so why you are punishing dealers makes no sense. Learn to beat the game... read super system and do as the man says “always tip your dealers.” Your argument is null and void. Makes no sense to punish the dealers and still give the casino your business... just a simple excuse to be cheap

I don't care if some stranger hates me.
If they don't make enough they should quit.
Why d you think I am saying poker dealers are bad people? It's not that they are bad, lol it's that their boss already charges me to play in the form of a rake. If I tip I am being double charged.

Pizza Hut has a delivery charge, so I don't tip their drivers...I already paid for the delivery.
The chinese place does not charge for deliveries so I do tip that guy.

See how it works? I don't double pay for things.

Pretty much every underground game in the area charges MORE rake than the casino does. The casino pays for TVs, cleaning, floor salary and must more... not to mention heavy taxes are placed on casinos.

I hate to break it to you, but the casino is not going to change their ways because one person does not tip.

The restaurant is making 40% profit or more on your food. Why aren’t you made at them for not giving it to the waiters?

That's why I play online mostly. The rake is very cheap compared to a casino. However when I do decide to play at the casino I choose not to tip. It's just too much: Rake, + tip, + tip for drinks, + expensive food..... just not worth it. So I get my own drinks, bring my own food, and don't tip.

Guess what, it works for me!! So I really don't care what you or anyone else thinks about it.

Did you forget that tipping is optional?

Oh I know it’s optional, but it’s a good system because it motivates good dealers... paying everyone the same is not a good system because there’s no incentive to do good...

Obviously not tipping works for you.. that doesn’t mean you are not self centered and narcistic... you obviously have no guilt over not paying someone that’s providing a service for you. Believe me everyone notices... there will be comments from time to time from the players sticking up for the dealer since the dealer can’t tell you what they really think of you.

Anyway I hope that you will figure it out and make the world a fairer place instead of taking advantage of the system, but it’s hard to convince people if they don’t have a voice inside them that gives a shit about other people

I'm sorry you see it that way but it is demonstratively wrong.
Do you tip the trash man who comes by and takes your trash every week?
Don't they supply you a service too?
Don't they have shit pay too?
Do you tip the guy at the service station that plugged your tire?
Did you know you are NOT supposed to tip an UBER driver?
Did you know other countries make tipping a poker dealer illegal?

So my question obviously is, why do some services expect tips and some don't?

Casinos make tons of money, they could pay more.
If I don't do my job up to standard, I get fired.

If the garbage man was making $4 an hour I would tip then. I tip Uber drivers too. Garbage men are actually making good money.

A guy from austraial was at the table last week and you know how much their take is? 3x what it is here... so yea you are taking advantage of the system you greedy dog.

If a dealer doesn’t do their job they get fired as well, but guess what there are already a ton of bad dealers bc it’s hard to find good people to begin with.

They are living people... my world view is to try to take care of other people... if you want to live life like a narcissist that’s on you... luckily 90% of the people aren’t like you so you won’t have that much of an effect, but I know I avoid people like you in real life... I know narcissistic people in real life and their personal relationships wane, but there’s probably not much you can do and it’s not entirely your fault but probably something that happened in childhood.

People will see you for who you are though. They definitely won’t miss your business if you quit.

For the record, dealers in the USA do not even get paid minimum wage. If any of you think that tipping a dealer is not good for you financially, it’s because you are just not good at poker.. All you non tippers need to grow up quite a bit, or learn how to play winning poker. I have yet to see a winning poker player complain about tipping. Poker is a game of information, and all’s your doing OP, is telling us that you’re not a profitable poker player...I mean, you are so bad, that you can’t afford to tip $1.00 when you win a pot! Hope to see you at the tables sooner than later. Don’t fret too much though, us winning poker players will continue to tip dealers. I’m sure the dealers could care less if you losers tip them out on the rare occasions that you fools win a hand...I wouldn’t expect a blind squirrel to ever tip me, even on the rare occasion that he finds a nut.

I guess i’m a weird one here, i tip dealers often even tho i rarely actually go to the casinos. First of all i go to the tables when i want to have fun, so i don’t go there in order “to make money”, so tipping the dealers is a common thing to do when it comes to me and all they have to do is to show a slight hospitality. I tip even more if even one player gets rude towards dealer and i do that because i want them to feel comfortable, i wouldn’t say that i feel sorry for them in that moment. And i use every chance to tip the trainees and dealers who feel unsecure because i want them to feel confident and casual at the tables where i play, it helps even me to feel welcomed and pleasant at the table.
My conclusion is that the reason for my behaviour here is because i respect the dealers as any other human being and because i like when everybody in my company feel comfortable and welcomed.
I hate when i see that some people relate dealers to casinos, which they don’t like obviously and i would like to ask them why the hell they go to the casinos if so in first place
Anyway, i like to tip people that provide any kind of service so dealers are no different to me

I tip when I scoop big pots if I'm losing its hard to tip so I tip at the cage if Im cashing out a losing session.

Depends on the stakes right - I mean high stakes players get a stack of nickels to tip off and medium stake grinders only have their $1 and $5 dollar chips in their stack

There is no rules to gratuities. Usually 1 or 2 dollars for a pot scoop is what I try to aim for - again though its hard if you're in a losing streak and easier in a winning streak

Just put yourself in their shoes right - if you deal someone a massive pot like 400 dollar scoop you're sitting there as the dealer like - well heck, he just made triple my daily wage lol .... so its in your best interest to tip at some point for the dealers :) :) :)

peace

95% of players at the 1-2 tables are losers. Funny thing is - they all tip.....
I can send you my yearly spreadsheets if you are that interested...

I haven't had a losing year in about a decade.

I usually tip the dealer blinds-wise, meaning I give them several BB as a tip. At first I started tipping only when my hand got to showdown and I had the nuts and figured that people are doing pretty much the same thing, in my mind it became a bit of a show of strenght. Recently I started tipping mostly when I win the pot without showdown and when I bluff-shoved, it may not have many sense to you, but I found that people are folding little bit more often against my shoves when I am doing that (they think I have it if I tipped the dealer).

Also, when I leave the room, and cash out, I usually like to round my winnings, meaning I practically leave another tip on the way out (just as an example if I have 104$ i leave 4$ and if I have 108$, i leave 3$)

Sounds like you're buying fold equity when you pay out tips. That's a great dual purpose expenditure of money. Funny and interesting way to think about it.

Seems to me that you just dont want to tip and are looking for people to "yes, you are right" and if they do not agree, they are wrong in your eyes. At least, that is what I carry from your posts and comments to your posts.

If you dont want to tip, then stand by your ideal. Dont cut people down for disagreeing with you (and making valid reasons as well).

Your understanding of the dealers job - as well as service industry as a whole - seems significantly lacking.

Tipping is part of the American culture in the service industry. Right or wrong, it is.

to tell the truth i dont play live cash games at all, so i wouldnt know how to tip the dealer. but i will probably tip according to the pot. or even buy the hour. because imagine how many hands you will play, and how many will you win. if every hand you win you tip, that doesnt sound smart.

It also depends on where you work and also how good you are..i have a close friend who is a dealer, he makes a good side living from tips as often, staff depend on this supplementary income, they have great weeks and poor weeks like many other services but personally, i always tip and if i win, i tip a certain fixed amount, have done for years and years so i stick to that philosophy.
I dont judge people who dont tip, its a personal choice and one that i feel should always be voluntary and without pressure or prejudice.

I'm kind of in the same boat as OP however it's not because I think they're "unskilled laborers" (which is somewhat demeaning) but mainly because of how much the rake is + how negatively it impacts your bb/100 and destroys your profit over the long run. I do still tip out of courtesy, but it's only 1 chip or so even if the pot was huge. Sometimes the table gives you the "look of shame" but you really can't care about that especially at a casino. Only thing you should be thinking of is profit, otherwise you're just playing casually for fun.

You're a cheap individual. That's pretty much the bottom line. Im sure you don't even tip waiters and waitresses. You think you're above people and don't realize those people are just making a living. We live off tips. Calling us unskilled? Well that's laughable. I currently have an Economics degree and own my own online business and like to supplement my income with a part time job. If our job was minimum wage you would be kicking and screaming about competent dealers and I doubt any dealer would even put up with the BS from people like you. You're cheap and probably single.
