Sorry kinda lost track of this. I toured the Thai islands where I barely got any poker done and got my laptop and camera robbed. Means I lost most my scenic photos but still have my nights out.

I went to Ko Phi Phi first which was a very small island with no motorized transport but loads of bars including a boxing bar where you can get in to the ring in return for a free bucket of vodka (I didn't but kinda wish I had).

Next I went to Koh Tao where I intended to do diving and get my PADI qualification. Unfortunately I was too badly sunburnt so just went out most nights.

Koh Phanghan was my final destination. I got all this elephant riding, ziplining touristy stuff done during the day, rode my scooter round the island around sunset then went out drinking each night. The full moon party was particularly good but unfortunately I got back home in the morning to find the hostel had been broken in to. Not sure if I'll be able to claim on my insurance as I've no police report as I had to catch the boat to the mainland without any sleep right after breakfast.

All in all a good time though. I guess the crash and the robbery are merely expensive lessons to be learnt :p

As for poker I haven't my results at hand, I'll need to email stars now my laptops gone but it's been my worst year to date, I could make a better hourly getting a job. So 2014 I'm leaving Stars for the softer euro sites and spending my first two months studying 30hours playing 10 hours as opposed to the reverse.

If I can turn things round I'll go travelling some more. canada, Berlin, Budapest or mexico spring to mind. If I can't I'll call it a day and get a job, it's been a good run but all good things come to an end.

Agree with WV and deuces.

How long have you considered yourself a full-time grinder, and was it always purely a monetary incentive ("I'll make more playing poker than doing anything else"), or was it more because you liked playing poker way more than the thought of a 9 to 5?

Well hopefully the insurance comes through although I won't hold my breath. If I had the chance to go back in time and cancel the trip I wouldn't. Was a great experience.

I'd have gone the US long before now if it weren't for the poker ban. I will likly go somtime, not so sure about vegas though I'm not that fond of live poker.

How long have you considered yourself a full-time grinder

Since June 2012 when I left uni but it's been my sole source of income since 2008. I aimed to put in 10hours a week at uni and 40 once I graduated. However between my App, inability to keep to my own schedule and devoting 25% of my hours to training I'd say I've put in about half the hours I aimed to.

The uni years I made 4x what I do now despite being a much worse player then than I am now. Thing is I've been stuck at 100NL for 5years which was never my intention. I wanted to reach mid stakes and my deteriorating results at 100NL have made it clear to me continuing down my current path is not the way to go.
Was it always purely a monetary incentive ("I'll make more playing poker than doing anything else"), or was it more because you liked playing poker way more than the thought of a 9 to 5?

A bit of both.
Short-term, goal was to have fun, flexible hours and make money doing something I enjoy. I'd say I achieved that.
Long term goal was to reach higher stakes and build up a nice nest egg to invest save enough to decrease my 9/5 workload post poker. In that aspect I've failed. Was worth a try though and I think I've the insight to know when to fold.

My only regret is not going full-time 2008 instead of 2012. Not sure if I should have put uni before poker as making money 2008 would have been far easier than 2012.

Thanks for the personal reply - that's really interesting. You say your 100nl results deteriorated despite becoming a better player over that time span. Are you saying the games toughened faster than you improved?

I can definitely understand regretting not starting sooner. I sometimes wonder how things might have been different if I'd started taking poker seriously back when no one was really that good. But tbf I wouldn't have had all the resources, less motivation perhaps, and it's kind of a moot point. Def wish it was legitimized here though.

Yep. Pretty much my reason for quitting as I can't really spare more than 10hours a week yet still can't keep ahead.

Hopefully the 30hour training will allow me to gain some momentum cuz what I'm doing now defo ain't working.

Thought I'd update this as I never really said bye before leaving poker/CardsChat as I felt like I could never return if I made a post saying I'm leaving :D.

I quit poker shortly after this trip but realized I love living abroad so I've been on the move ever since working as an app developer. I spent 2014-2015 in London, 2016-18 in Amsterdam and 2019-20 in Madrid. I'm hoping to go back to Asia this year once the Corona virus dies down.

Thanks for following and I really appreciate all the help I got from the CC community over the years. Grinding SSNL and being an active member of the poker community was a great experience I don't regret in the slightest.
